Those of us who grew up in the late 70's and early 80's were so lucky to have great music and great channels that we could actually see artists perform there songs.
Love looking at the old technology. atari 1200xl, CRT screen and toward the end a board full of 16 pin through-hole IC chips.... gate logic I'm guessing.... VERY 80's.... Fun, Fun, Fun!!! Thanks for posting
sounds way off at 2:00 unless its just me hearing it that way but other than that Donnie Iris is 1 of the greatest Rock N' Roll singers/groups out there just to bad that the modern rock groups do not sound like this since just my opinion that they do NOT put any of their heart or soul into their songs unlike the groups from the 70's to the mid 90's
Ah, If only I could re-live the summer of 1983 over and over and over. If I could do that, I'd never have to live my life without my beautiful Gina. She was the only one true love of my life.
know i know why i never heard of this guy in the 80s .... he sucks ass and looks like buddy holly and elvis costello had anal sex and this was the bi product
Quality stuff. My mom used to record videos off of TV in the early 80's and this one's on one of the tapes.
This video reflects Mr. Iris' partnership with the Atari company. He endorsed their computers and used them in the recording process on the album this song is from.
I think people have to keep in mind that this was way back in the early 80s when videos were just starting to become a common occurence in the music scene. As for Donnie who has lived his entire life in Pittsburg, I sense he and his friends got together to make these videos and kept things local. I don't think he was aiming for U2 status. Just a local guy making music for anyone who would listen. We need more 'real' downto earth musicians like this today.
@Delisle4 People all around the country know/or at least knew his music. There were minor national hits. They must have been heavy promotion to do that, I'm sure Donnie didn't want to just "stay local".
Fair enough, glad to see that he had a fair deal of success in the US. Did not hear much of him here in Canada but I was still in elementary school in the early 80s.
romaneeto.... DONNIE ROCKS!!!!!!!!! I have seen him live so many times I can't count he's very nice in person and humble! The live show's are just amazing most bands can't preform the way they do in the studio this is not true of DI and the Cruisers
Donnie would like to thank Daryl Hall for letting him borrow John Oates. Great job John on the bass. Sorry, I can't help it. Do you compute bad jokes?
I've said it before and I'll say it again. Donnie Iris has to be one of the most underrated rockers of all time. Not the greatest videos but some pf the best tunes of the early 80's. Never had the pleasure of seeing him and his band live but from those that I have spoken to claim they put on a good show. One of my friends met him and said he was down to earth. That's good enough for me. Do you compute? Cutting edge song before Al Gore invented the internet. I'm cereal.
hey lemmycaution25. You nailed it!! Whatever happened to MUSIC-TV (MTV)--it doesn't exist anymore. I don't know where it went. I still remember friday night vidoes before cable and MTV. By the way, what do teens do for fun now--they sure don't cruz main on fri/sat night anymore. Even in a small/rural town it was packed with kids on tailgates in parking lots just hangin out and jammin with the radio too loud. We had fun and lived for the weekend. I don't know about now.
I recall 1984, I was 14 when I first heard this song and Donnie. I later learned that this song was a follow up to Ah!Leah and Love is Like A Rock. What can I say, very typical of the 80's, video and soundwise, but that is OK wit me. Donnie did not get the recognition that he deserved. Rock on!
This song came out in 1984 or 1985, I believe, and a lot of people were expecting more "Love Is Like A Rock" or "Ah Leah" songs. But the album it was on (Fortune 410) really didn't have any songs like those, so it left a lot of Iris fans flat. I think this was a fun, kind of tongue-in-cheek song, but the chord progressions and keyboards made it sound like a serious song.
Hey, man, it was the early '80s. I personally like the video, but yes it is primitive. But Donnie Iris is one of the best singer/songwriter/performers EVER!!!!!!!!
Has to be one of the most underrated bands of the 80's. Heady lyrics and great use of the Atari keyboard...hee.....hee...
All joking aside, great music and one of my most favorite bands from the good ol' MTV days. I once asked my ex-wife that same question, "Do you compute?" Notice ex in the sentence. Great song but not to used for practical purposes. I ended up computing the loss in dollars and cents.
This was a good sized hit song in the Louisville, Kentucky region during, what late 1982-early 1983? Donnie always had a decent sized fan base around here. WQMF 95.7 FM still plays "Ah, Leah" and you get "Love is like a rock" sometimes after midnight! Of course the local oldies channel spins, "The Rapper"!
haha trop mauvais comme toune. Cest pas pour rien qu'elle a passé a dollaraclp. Merci Louis-José Houde d'avoir scrapper ma vie. Mais jai une question est-ce quils se sont tous tirré une balle après cette médiocre perfomance?
Man what a blast from the past! Totally forgot about this song...have it on an old worn out cassette buried around somewhere that I haven't heard for 25 years. Donnie's biggest hit was 'Ah Leah', but 'Do You Compute?' should have been his #1 hit. This song just kicks...amazing, after all these years, the emotion of this tune still gets it! (Especially with his smooth & haunting high pitched screams!) Awesome!!!

Holds up a hell of a lot better musically than you would think it should.
Wasn't a huge fan of this song when it came out; I missed the guitar crunch of his earlier hits...I appreciate it more now.
Here in the Northeast, DI still gets plenty of airplay...should have gotten a lot everywhere all along.
