but a conventional tow bar attaches to the frame of the car, thus giving support to what your towing. I would think the weight of the van would place pressure on the beetles roof.

Most new cars don't have frames. Spreading the load over the roof distributes the load better, given that the hitch assembly is securely and wisely fastened, not to mention made in a way that spreads the load over both the A, B and C-pillars. Given that the trailer is balanced well, with no severe extra weight in the front or the back, it wouldn't put much stress on the car and if it did, it would do it to all four wheels, not just the back ones. I say we bring this thing back!
