Hypothesis: "Real" Lain is the hero of this story who is trying to prevent the Knights from spreading their digital chaos into the "real" world. Because there are two worlds, the real world and The Wired, there are also two Lains, one who is a hero, and one is a villain. These two seem to be foil and polar opposite characters.

.....i think lain's older sis has the same powers like lain but she hasn't connected with the wired world like lain and so no one is rlly giving her any attention like they give lain.....i haven't even seen anyone post anything about how weird lain's sis been acting since the other replica of her disappeared into thin air.

Does it have something to do with the multiple personalities she shows maybe? As in, "Lain #1" is really shy and knows little about computers, "Lain #2" is more assertive and is a computer genius. People with multiple personality syndrome in real life have been documented with this situation. Their "other personality" can know how to play the piano when they don't, for example.
