Beautiful poem, shame on the Arizona government for trying to ban this kind of teaching which our people had sweat, bled, struggled and died for equal rights, justice and better labor and trying to erase our part of the story .
This poem and Gonzales's words have changed my entire outlook on my people and especially myself. The EDUCATION and involvement of our people is needed to gain the equality that Corky and his carnals y carnalas wanted so much for us, now we must fight (peacefully) for that same equality which have yet to gain
Its about being proud, standing tall, and screaming at the top of your lungs ! "I AM... " . slash thy stereotypes by the throat and pave a new road, never forget you are a part of the masses, the RAZA. " i will ENDURE"
The poem uses Joaquin Murieta as a symbol, I guess... and there is a part in there about him. Think of it as Joaquin Murieta in the broadest of terms in symbolism....
@Beentakenaway123 Part one ends (almost) with Joaquin Mureita, who was a Mexican 'Robin Hood/resistance fighter' from Sonora CA and environs (east of SF) Hero!
I split the video in half because YouTube has a time limit. Otherwise, parts 1 and 2 are not edited further down. If I had my way, I would upload the video in 1 video. But, that's how it has to be for now. Click on my username to find "I Am Joaquin part 1 of 2" if you're missing the beginning.
@rockera321 el poema esta dividido en dos partes, como ya te respondieron, pero aparte de eso, el video completo no es de todo el poema. si ay partes que decidieron no poner.
Oh-- I found the original DV tape I recorded this on, and I've transfered it into DVD Studio Pro. But since I have never used it... it's going to take some time before I can really author a good copy of this film (in chapters and background history.)
It would be wonderful to write a similar poem that addresses the current issues of immigration and injustices that have continued since 1969. Perhaps Luis Valdez or Teatro Campesino alumni could participate. SF Mime Troupe, Edward James Olmos, many who would support such an effort. animo nos humanos, Hunter
I'm not a poet, but I strongly believe that there isn't really a prominent platform for Chicano arts now-a-days that isn't from the "Old Generation." When I auditioned for Mummified Deer before Christmas, I had this thought, "Always-- the 1930s, 40s, 50s, 60s, 70s, and parts of the 80s." There isn't a body of art comparable about Chicanos not living in those decades.
Hola, I agree that there isn't a very big Chicano voice among younger people right now. perhaps there is some evolution and reforming of the identity. I met a man from Peru today who said the hardest part about moving to USA is being called a latino. He had never considered himself having any relation to Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, etc.
Thanks brother.. I would appreciate it if you would let me know when you finish your project. I would volunteer, but I have no tech skills whatsoever.
People have been emailing me (mostly teachers) for a copy of this vid. I am more than happy to send you a DVD copy if you send me a blank DVD. However, I am interested in finding people who can fix up some of the quality of the vid and audio, two... add menus, chapters, and English Spanish subtitless and three-- maybe finding choice people to create 2 or three minutes length videos on the historical, literary, and political aspects of the poem to burn along with this vid.
:O I feel empowered by this poem. It sends a great and powerful message. Luis Valdez's work never fails to amaze me.

Born in a white man's country, with no shame
I know I am different, so I don't assimilate
Raised to think for myself, I hate
I am Mexican...
Proud to be. The only shame, that I know
Is to be a malcreado like my Anglo peers
Oh I wish to be for who I am and not ones own slave to be...
