Mary is not Semiramis, just like Jesus is not Mithras, even though there are some similarities. Catholics are taught that worship is reserved only for God. They're taught to honor Mary with a very high form of honor, called Latreia, which is below worship. They're only allowed to ask Mary to pray for them as an intercessor, they are not allowed to ask her to do anything but pray. After death, we're all still living members of the Body of Christ who can pray for the ones still on earth.

I'm not Catholic, but I grew up in the RCC, so I'm telling you what they believe. When a Catholic says: Ask Mary to do this or that or to bless, etc, they mean ask Mary to pray for this or that thing for you, but since it's understood, they don't spell it out that they asked for prayer. In the Old World, it's considered a normal display of honor to kneel before royalty, & it's not considered worship to kneel, which is why in the Old World they knelt to honor Mary, not to worship her.

If your loved one is away from you, you might look at a photo of them while you write them a letter or compose a song or poem for them, you might even kiss the photo or say "Goodnight" to it, even though you know it's just a reminder. And that's the only purpose for Christian statues and paintings.

@Coroneljj: In order to attach a demon to a statue, or anything else, you have to do a ritual to invoke that demon. Christians do not invoke demons into their artwork, they actually ask God to bless these works of art. Christian art served a very important purpose for the over 1,600 years that most Christians could not read & did not own a Bible. Those people saw the Gospel & Bible stories depicted in works of art & that's how they learned the spiritual concepts of the Christian Faith.
