@xZealQcx well sir sand has been proven to cause impaction in some not all geckos so theres is a risk i know people think it looks better but their is a risk of impaction .... so if your going to use sand in your habitat feed the geckos in another container so they don't accidentally take a gulp of sand when tryna catch their food
Some guy told me to buy some sand for 2 bucks more instead of repticarpet. He said sand was better for them but I was cheap bought the carpet instead. Glad I did I hear a lot of people saying it's bad for them.
Okay, guys. Why is everybody saying that sand is 'horrible' for Leopard geckos?! I've been using sand for my Leopard gecko for 10 years, and my gecko is fine. Plus, Leopard geckos originate from the desert, They are fine with sand.
I am thinking of getting a leopard gecko and don't know what to use for it's substrate. Some people say sand. Some say carpet, and some say aspen or paper towels. What should I do if I ever get one?
that looks like the type of gecko baby you get from petco or another chain store. I highly suggest purchasing a gecko from a breeder, trustworthy petstore, or definitely adopting. (for beginners, since young geckos can be hard to care for)
plus don't use sand with geckos that size. use reptile carpeting or even safe paper towels.
why do so many owners of reptiles use sand? it looks nice, but still the risk of impaction is not worth it. i would highly recommend 'Zoo Med Eco Reptile Terrarium Carpet' its easy to keep clean and isn't a pain to look at. and it is not expensive.
Just to let you know sand is bad for them. They can get sand in there stomach and get hurt. Not to be rude but no sand its bad for them.Just a little advice :)
When the smaller leopards ingest a cricket with some sand on it, it could cause impaction. The particles are a less worrisome to a larger leopard but still a factor. Large bearded dragons however calcium infused sand is good for them. Though we always kept the small bearded just on newspaper in the shop.
sand actually is fine for them i've been doing tons of research on leos and there was a man who has bred leo's for 25 years and he heard about the sand tale and he still used sand and he has never had a problem....and if something does happen there are special things you can give them to help.
@sedeek55 im going to get a leopard gecko but i have a question for you. You say that sand is bad so im assuming you like carpet. I f you have carpet are you supposed to have a place where they go poop or is okay if they poop n the carpet. I would think the poop would stain and get stuck on carpet but i need some advice. Thank you.
@sedeek55 it depends how old your animal is people like u are retards that probably cant keep they're animals properly. sand as long as it is a fine grade sand u can use sand if not then find a finer grain.
@sedeek55 it depends how old your animal is people like u are retards that probably cant keep they're animals properly. sand as long as it is a fine grade sand u can use sand if not then find a finer grain.
@sedeek55 idiot how this subtrate can be bad for léo ..... HE LIVE IN DESERTTTTTTTTTT FFS ITS NATURAL SAND FOR HIM its not my fault if your léo eat sands because you dont give him calcium -.-! dumb
They are nocturnal but normally come out in the day if they are hunting or a bored of siting in a hide. I would not use sand because it's been known to impact them when they go to eat, use bark coco fibre or paper towl
i would not use a tank that is any less than a ten gallon if the tank is too small it can cause shock for gecko i have a ten gallon for my juvenile in the future when he gets bigger i might get him a 20 gallon tank:)
Just so you know sand can cause impaction, so it's better to use a different substrate. But, I do know people who have had success on sand. Just be careful and know that you risk serious health issues for your gecko with sand.
sand isnt that bad if you know how to make it safe, just mist it like 5 times and it will harden to the piont where the geckos bites wont break it. so its perfictly safe if you take purcautions.
Also dosent that tank look a little small to anyone else?
With the sand situation why don't you just use reptile carpet and if you don't want to buy reptile carpet use newspaper if you don't want to use either of those you might aswell kill your gecko now. Think about please unless you don't care about you gecko, goodbye.
You do realise that a leopard geckos natural enviroment does not contain sand it is alot more rocks than sand and geckos have a tendancy to lick the sand as i have witnessed which could cause impaction ending in the deathof your gecko. Please read up on any pet before you go out and buy one, thankyou.
omg having sand in you setup for any geckos is extreemly wrong you are outting it in so much stress and lepord geckos are dumb so when thy go to eat the there meal thy eat sand when thy try to eat the meal. ive had mine for 11 years and wow he is huge ive just recentlly got a female one and she instanly dominates lol yoour incloser is to small and btw mealmorms and wakworms are more bad thn good for thm you should onlly just use the calcium dust and crickets as thy have verry week bellys :

and i use two types of thermonators i have two thermonaters for each side of the tank and one hygrometre to test the humidity in the mmiddle of the tank i suggest getin them no?
@borntoride1231 well its ok to use sand just not man made sand, wild sand is circular if you look under a microscope Nd man made sand is square,,,, therefore some sand is ok.
Well I think that he should buy reptile carpet and some fake leaves and bushes and some desert plants but I'll recommend tan reptile carpet. + A smaller water dish that costed me about 50 dollars because I bought alot of plants!
@candycanecornsnake Well you can put the sand in but make sure it isn't calci sand and don't feed it while you have the sand or you can get paper towels and then feed her or him
@stupidcombatarmsvids na it isnt calci sand just normal desert sand but it has been cut into round pieces and has been sifted to remove any impurities. but when i feed her i will move her into a seperate cage and do it
You don't put sand in a leopard gecko tank. The tank needs to be 15 gallons at least. They should have a heat emitter (not a light or heat mat) that can produce a gradient. They need a hot hide, a humid hide box with sphagnum moss, and a cool hide. They're a desert species and don't need any kind of plants. Someone didn't do their research. As for crickets... a 5 gallon glass tank with sphagnum moss on 1/4 of the bottom for moisture and laying, then oatmeal on the other side as bedding.

@onichan30 ur geckos going to die dud ur not supposed to have sand in it retard it can kill yo gecko put like a sand fake carpet thingy in there and then put a meal worm dish in it problem solved
your seriously using sand for a gecko???? it will end up dead ill guarantee you now maybe instead of just buying a pet you should research the dangers so u know wot ur doing snakes and geckos are not the same and u cant treat them like they are i have both a corn and a super snow gecko and ther both set up correctly depending on individual needs u may use sand for a snake altho it carries a risk of ticks but not for a gecko u will end up with impaction and a dead gecko use repti carpet or bark
The 7 gallon tank is a part of a starter kit with the sand and all the equipment. And it's only for when he's a baby. I have the same for my baby but I just used news paper instead of the sand. If the professionals are selling it as a starter kit It must be ok. Who should you really listen to a bunch of knobs on YouTube or an experienced breeder/ reptile manager?!?
Nice vid just don't use sand it causes impaction use the thing called repticarpet you can buyit a a local pet store for 4-10$ depending on the size of a tank
so like i found a leopard gecko outside my house being attacked by a cat. so i rescued him...i have no idea what to do...lol help? i would like to keep him but im confused with the heating and the mats and stuff....
@Reptileden98 oh cool so did he move to Canada and I live on an island called Guernsey above next to France but we don't speak French we speak English check it out on google maps
Guys Calm down give the kid some credit for frekin trying when you were that small did you make video, dont think so, u go kid dont pay attention to these bastards.
I dnteven have my leopard geckos yet but i even know not to use sand. If u actually change your bedding, try using repti carpet by zoo med or bark but no cedar or pine.
If you still dnt listen, at least get zoo med sand. BTW Sand is the most important, most dangerous bedding
if you use sand your gecko is at risk of getting impaction, use reptie carpet, tissue paper/ paper towels or substrates that are to big for the gecko to swollow
i use walnut shells idk if that's ok
gagedosenotlikejb 5 minutes ago
do not use sand they dont live on it anyway so u are changing their natural way use paper towel or repti carpet

is sand ok if you use anther cage for feeding

The 7 gallon tank is a part of a starter kit with the sand and all the equipment. And it's only for when he's a baby. I have the same for my baby but I just used news paper instead of the sand. If the professionals are selling it as a starter kit It must be ok. Who should you really listen to a bunch of knobs on YouTube or an experienced breeder/ reptile manager?!?

I dnteven have my leopard geckos yet but i even know not to use sand. If u actually change your bedding, try using repti carpet by zoo med or bark but no cedar or pine.
If you still dnt listen, at least get zoo med sand. BTW Sand is the most important, most dangerous bedding

lovebugstargirl 10 months ago
if you use sand your gecko is at risk of getting impaction, use reptie carpet, tissue paper/ paper towels or substrates that are to big for the gecko to swollow
kmtatyou 10 months ago
@kmtatyou You are right about the sand. It like a bunch of cheese. It gives your reptile impaction.
