The military-industrial complex and the defense industry are ATROCIOUS! They are two of the most disgusting things I've ever heard of. WHY do you want other people profiting off death and destruction worldwide?? Does military contracting to PRIVATE companies REALLY even "enhance efficiency" in warmaking compared to GOVERNMENT making all those weapons, planes, etc. itself?? I doubt it. At the most, the 'enhanced efficiency' is overstated.
The sad truth is that there can ONLY BE a defense industry if WE CONSTANTLY GO TO WAR! Or use war-like weapons across the globe on a nonstop basis. If America had a Jeffersonian or Washingtonian foreign policy, the defense industry could not hold up. It would be bankrupt.
Hell, all the defense industry really is is corporate welfare for hawks and those promising "jobs" to their constituents by taking the easy way out.
Defense jobs are useless, if you ask me. They don't enhance economic growth in the long run except in terms of individual incomes for those people, who then go out and buy shit with the wages. But the profits those companies make, the high executive compensation, etc. DON'T enhance our economic prosperity. HOW COULD THEY?? What OTHER practical application does a B-2 bomber have than war?? And it's not like you're gonna get these companies to suddenly CHANGE overnight and stop
their ways. Not to mention I'm not sure it's all that easy or inexpensive to take apart big planes or weapons and then use those parts efficiently for another use. Building weapons, tanks, planes that destroy, rather than BUILD UP, commercial buildings, schools, roads, bridges, hospitals, etc. etc., cannot possibly do that much good for society overall.
As Eugene Debs once said, it's basically THE ELITES, esp. the wealthy ones who run big companies, that send the middle-class and poor to war. It is RARELY the people themselves who ASK TO GO TO WAR on their own without any nudging. The elites SEND US TO WAR! It works the same in any nation. The US finds out AQ was in Afghanistan, US demands Afghan govt the Taleban to hand over AQ, Taleban refuses. US attacks and defeats Taleban, founds out AQ was buying weapons from Saddam, UN inspects Iraq, Saddam bans inspection, US attacks Iraq defeats Saddam. We should have left after Saddam and Taleban's defeat and let Arab troops take over.

I cannot dispute the statements he is making, however, I was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital (Army's largest and where many injured soldiers come for treatment) during the war and it's poor reputation was way overblown by the media. The US finds out AQ was in Afghanistan, US demands Afghan govt the Taleban to hand over AQ, Taleban refuses. US attacks and defeats Taleban, founds out AQ was buying weapons from Saddam, UN inspects Iraq, Saddam bans inspection, US attacks Iraq defeats Saddam. We should have left after Saddam and Taleban's defeat and let Arab troops take over.

So, a country with many weapons but has no money....what do you do? Generate money by selling your weapons to the highest bidder: Al Qaida. What about WMDs? Iraq still had the capabilities of making WMD, we found many chemical cylinders and rockets capable of deploying chemical payloads.

Oil in afghanistan is almost nonexistent, while Iraq has a small reserve. Kuwait and Pakistan are the big business nations. Nations we helped, but one refused to accept the help for good. Fairly new to Parenti; smart guy! I cannot dispute the statements he is making, however, I was stationed at Walter Reed Hospital (Army's largest and where many injured soldiers come for treatment) during the war and it's poor reputation was way overblown by the media. I worked/lived there during the infamous media coverag. Simply not true!! As usual, the awesome General in command (Kevin Kiley) was fired as the scapegoat. Just sharing some first hand knowledge. Did you not listen to the video, he cited the benefit cuts in specific budgets. Nobody is saying get rid of the whole military(a proposal by the noted marxist Thomas Jefferson), just that we don't need to have a budget the size of the rest of the world combined, a Navy the size of the next 13 combined including 11 NATO/other "allies", etc.. There is no other country that has this problem, and they all have gov. healthcare for everybody.

I am convinced that the only prospect for creating a legitamate democracy in the US is to first of all, to defund, disarm and disband the military and secondly redirect these people into constructive civilian occupations. The phrase "support the troops" is simply a propaganda phrase by the arch war mongers in the Republican Party; and the fellow traveling war mongers in the Democratic Party--the phrase has no meaning--support the troops doing what? Making war on another country? Occupying that other country? Maybe the survivors of Fallujah should be asked if they supported our troops. So what the hell does that mean, support the troops? Tell me what it means, then I will tell you if I support them.

You're right that they had a choice. You're right that they don't necessarily deserve all the sympathy they get. I however disagree that they are all patriotic warmongers. Problem is: lots of them believe the propaganda. They really think they're fighting the bad-guys... even when the masses of evidence point to the contrary. For that, I pity them. They signed up, and a lot of the time, they don't even know for what.

In may of 2007 I was in a military convoy a group of 3 convoys and 1 Iraqi gun trucks the an IED went off in front of the 2nd convoy. My hands and arms were badly burnt with much if my skin gone. Was I taken care if YES!!! If I could do it again I would because I love my country! Fuck Michael Parenti!!

They are just following orders, many that lead to death and psychological and physical trauma. I don't find it reasonable to support a war just because the blood of our own brothers and sisters is shed. How much sense does it make to continue a war that has led to this? Does it make sense to support a war just because our soldiers scream in pain, hear bombs in their heads, have visions of mangled bodies, visions of destroyed lives, visions of fire, visions of smoke, visions of hopelessness, as you would seem to have it?

marinesarelife, I am an individual who is not only opposed to the war, but vehemently so. With that said, it in no way follows that I do not have reverence for you and your comrades who are fighting overseas. Bravery and sacrifice, however misled, does not lose its luster to me. It infuriates me to realize that men and woman such as yourself have to experience many of the horrifying traumas that I've read about.
