Ive seen the doc but man...he looks so angry all the time...like really pissed...you really understand the hard work they all go through the tours...its exasting and see him that way, he really made me sad...he says the f word alot but, if you want honest and truth than its a must see...you will really get what jon said, the he wanted the fans see the other side.
You know what I hate,,,is that cds are released in Japan and overseas before here in the states and they get bonus songs on the disc and we get shafted,,,,thats fucked up. So what if your cd goes number 1 there and only goes number 5 here,,,,,we generate most of your tour sales so we should get the early grabs on the cd and the bonus tracks,,,,WTF????
Jon feels a sppecial connection with the Japanese market as they were the first territory to really accept the band. The US generates such a high tour gross purely because they play more shows there. The European gigs (and in the past, Japanese gigs) were far bigger.
When you listen to this interview, Jon's voice sounds 'live' and outside ... in the outdoors as they are. The interviewer's voice sounds like it's been recorded in a studio.
I think originally the interviewer asked Jon the questions in English, there on the spot. Then I think they re-recorded the interviewer asking the questions in Japanese and dubbed them over.
This way the Japanese fans could hear the questions asked in Japanese but still hear Jon's voice when he responds in English.
It is simultaneous translation. The interpreters are tought at school how to translate at the same time when someone is speaking. It requires special techniques and it is a special skill. I graduated from English philology (I am Polish) and although I myself was not trained as simultaneous translator (I was in a group that focussed on British Literature and Culture rather than on translations) I had some friends who were.
Of course I do not deny that Jon does understand a bit of Japanese. He travels so much and goes to Japan quite often. But in order to understand the questions of the interviewer and react to them so quickly you must be a fluent speaker. It is rare forthe Americans or the Europeans to be fluent speakers of Japanese:) They hardlly ever learn Japanese as second language. And Jon often says in interviews that he did not study languages (which he fairly regrets)

I was wondering too. Does he understand Japanese or does he have an ear piece for the translation? I think he did understand the interviewer.
