Kristofferson will live in my heart forever. He is a man with a lot of compassion for people. He is all about freedom, justice and mercy. Plus one brilliant songwriter!
This song is just great and wise with its lyrics and its message "No more war and no more killing in the name of god (of any god, I think) ... or it's all over..."
He Knows this first hand Ya all need to know he was a helo pilot in my war. He knows what he is singing about He flew Med a vac in the tet offensive Un like pres AWOL an/ deferment cheney he lived it like i did. Bring them home NOW I am a disabled VET USN Retired Naval Aviation

He volunteered for Vietnam, but fortunately (!!!) they didn't let him go, because they wanted him to teach English literature at West Point ... For sure he would have done his duty and might never have returned... just inconceivable... I not even dare to think about it...

I was in Dallas, Texas, on November 22, 1963, when so many dreams died so suddenly and abruptly. I think that perhaps now we may finally have a chance to reach the end of that long, hard road, and to regain the destiny that we came so close to grasping all those years ago.
Vietnam was what we had instead of a happy childhood -- but we can't end our lives with the cynical bitterness of men like jotm1. We still have time to change.
I left college after my first semester and enlisted as soon as I turned 17. The Air Force tagged me for language aptitude and sent me to Yale University for an 8-month intensive course in Mandarin Chinese; I flew my first combat sortie out of Danang shortly before my 19th birthday -- so yeah, Vietnam was very much a part of my childhood. At the age when other kids were wondering who to take to the Senior Prom, I was being mortared by some VC in Eye Corps.
The things you're saying, man, you're not making me angry. I just feel embarrassed for you, and more than a little sad, that you have to say such spiteful things to your own brothers in arms. None of us had a real fun time in Vietnam, but that was long ago and 10,000 miles away from here. The mistakes we made, well, we won't even get them back or have a chance to undo them. All we can do now is to try to do some good with the time that we have left. Maybe make some peace.
You're the guy slammmed his brothers in arms. The entire USAF SP's were insulted by your snide stick up the ass in the guardshack comment among others.
You just don't like it when you crack wise and are given a taste of your own medicine.
You want to make peace? Well, knock yourself out. You should start by keeping your nasty comments to yourself.
Since you persist in maintaining such a high profile, I can only honestly say that we who flew the missions over Indian Country and carried the war to the North regarded AP's as somewhat analogous to tits on a bull -- everyone could see them, but no one was really sure what they did.
to jotm1 ,maybe i should get drunk and high like you; then you might make a lil sense. why dont you go watch saving private ryan, then youl see wat combat is really like, ur just a paper soldier marching in parades - thats probably the most youve ever done for your country.
If jotm 1 ever pulls his head out of his ass it'll be a sound heard round the world! You bore us all, even without listing your brother's laurels. I think you're lying about serving anyway. I know one thing, you're all cheap talk, and NEVER SAW COMBAT! You would have been fragged it you did.
C'mon "big man" of such "big wit" answer the question - EVER SEE COMBAT? We can all see through you and know you didn't. You're a weak impotent fool with a big mouth, little intellect, no compassion and still dumber than dogshit. Period.
So, you never served. I did, but not in combat; he went to Viet Nam, not me, and obviously not you either. It's obvious how little you know, or want to know. Your comments make it clear that you are dumber than dogshit.
Last time I looked my DD Form 214 said I am an Honorably discharged Military ploiceman, USAF 09 May 1972. I wont bore you with a list of my brother's laurels.
Now, pick up your piece of dogshit and smoke it asswipe while you utilize your room temp IQ to put the pieces of that puzzle together and figure out your lifelong loser streak wont be threatened here tonight.
Hey, I DID serve in Vietnam, from 12/65 through 3/68, and I logged 173 combat sorties with Rolling Thunder, participated in the first US air strikes on the POL dumps at Hanoi and Haiphong, Operation Bolo, Silver Dawn, Rivet Top, and was at Danang for Tet in 1968.
My brother was one of those who fought in our name in Viet Nam. Did you? Are you commenting from Iraq or Afghanistan? Kris was in the military and didn't go AWOL like Bush, and didn't get 5 false deferments like Cheney, who had Halliburton trade with Lybia during our embargo in order to not "lose its competitive advantage" AS CHENEY SAID! WAKE UP! This country was founded by LIBERALS!! Fools just go along to get along.
I love Kristofferson, but let's be honest, he is a liberal. I do not say that in an insulting way, but I think he can sing what he sings because people have fought in our name.
I'm playing this song during adult education class at church tomorrow along with "Pilgrim's Progress". I think speaking about Laci Peterson's death and putting it in the context of our collective sins and suffering is so powerful. Only someone as wise and poetic as Kris Kristofferson could do it.
I love Kris, I' ve been a fan of his for 35 years (I'm 51). He is a wise poet who has always spoken the truth using the lyrics of his music. I swear to God, God must be crying too. We have to stop this war now. I hope the american people unite and make our govt stop the killing.
peace
I also like They Killed Him and Love Is the Way. More truth from Kris, more wisdom for us if we use it.
It's not only god but Mary Too ,who cries at each times she appears & speaks to poor hearted human one ;the most often our childs in poor situation or country.
Sometimes war is neccessary BUT THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR IRAQ...Iraq is a war of choice by a criminal President and Vice President and enabled by a criminal Republican Party and a spineless Democratic Party...A war based on lies and deception cannot be won .......
Heard Kris being interviewed on the Johnie Walker show last Sunday (in Britain) and heard this.I'm not familiar with his music, but thought this was thoughtful and humane.
Some fans hail Kris and curse Bush. I hate the war in Iraq, but Kris did another song called, "Sandinista", endorsing that political- communist party in Nicaragua. I don't understand.
The Sandinistas brought down a political dynasty much like that of the Bushes or Kennedys, and then they succeeded in defeating a US-backed attempt to overthrow them and install a US-approved government. The party was also democratically elected twice. Wiki Sandinista National Liberation Front and Contras. Also, a protip for the future: communist does not automatically mean bad.

You just don't like it when you crack wise and are given a taste of your own medicine.
You want to make peace? Well, knock yourself out. You should start by keeping your nasty comments to yourself.

jotm1,
Since you persist in maintaining such a high profile, I can only honestly say that we who flew the missions over Indian Country and carried the war to the North regarded AP's as somewhat analogous to tits on a bull -- everyone could see them, but no one was really sure what they did.

More gutter sniping from a punk in a bus driver outfit who can dish it but cant take it.
Fuck me? ... Oh my, you fell into the category of "Don't ask, don't tell"?
What a surprise. That explains much.

jotm1,
You really are a piece of work -- the kind of guy who, when you come into a room, makes it feel like somebody just left.
Face it -- you were a school-crossing guard in the world's largest paramilitary organization.

to jotm1 ,maybe i should get drunk and high like you; then you might make a lil sense. why dont you go watch saving private ryan, then youl see wat combat is really like, ur just a paper soldier marching in parades - thats probably the most youve ever done for your country.
kp295swiss 3 years ago
You mean get drunk and high like your hero, KK
I'm a tea-toatler.
Maybe you can further emulate your hero and punch your spouse in the face to express your anger.

Great song, great lyrics, lots of trues. Thx Kris

Littlewolf68 3 years ago 2
you wouldn't know a banana clip from a banana split. A tripod from a tricycle. A C-ration from a C-cap.
You, little man of little wit, come off as a pussy and an asshole all rolled into one.
jotm1 3 years ago
C'mon "big man" of such "big wit" answer the question - EVER SEE COMBAT? We can all see through you and know you didn't. You're a weak impotent fool with a big mouth, little intellect, no compassion and still dumber than dogshit. Period.
Littlewolf68 3 years ago
Been there, done that, left part of myself there.
Now, go fuck yourself, asshole.

a sound you are obviosly very familiar with. have another swig of firewater and puff on this piecepipe.

Littlewolf sez "My brother ... in Vietnam" ... blah, blah, blah.
What was YOUR military service? Does this mean YOU didn't do Jack Squat worth of military service?
jotm1 3 years ago
So, you never served. I did, but not in combat; he went to Viet Nam, not me, and obviously not you either. It's obvious how little you know, or want to know. Your comments make it clear that you are dumber than dogshit.
Littlewolf68 3 years ago
Last time I looked my DD Form 214 said I am an Honorably discharged Military ploiceman, USAF 09 May 1972. I wont bore you with a list of my brother's laurels.
Now, pick up your piece of dogshit and smoke it asswipe while you utilize your room temp IQ to put the pieces of that puzzle together and figure out your lifelong loser streak wont be threatened here tonight.

john1,
Hey, I DID serve in Vietnam, from 12/65 through 3/68, and I logged 173 combat sorties with Rolling Thunder, participated in the first US air strikes on the POL dumps at Hanoi and Haiphong, Operation Bolo, Silver Dawn, Rivet Top, and was at Danang for Tet in 1968.

Littlewolf68 3 years ago 2

What does the verse about the pregnant woman being drowned reference? Is this a metaphor? Or does it reference an actual murder?

Bush took us there with his war.

Sometimes war is neccessary BUT THIS IS NOT TRUE FOR IRAQ...Iraq is a war of choice by a criminal President and Vice President and enabled by a criminal Republican Party and a spineless Democratic Party...A war based on lies and deception cannot be won .......
medesdaddy 3 years ago
Heard Kris being interviewed on the Johnie Walker show last Sunday (in Britain) and heard this.I'm not familiar with his music, but thought this was thoughtful and humane.
broomybank 3 years ago 2
Some fans hail Kris and curse Bush. I hate the war in Iraq, but Kris did another song called, "Sandinista", endorsing that political- communist party in Nicaragua. I don't understand.
rll1954 3 years ago
The Sandinistas brought down a political dynasty much like that of the Bushes or Kennedys, and then they succeeded in defeating a US-backed attempt to overthrow them and install a US-approved government. The party was also democratically elected twice. Wiki Sandinista National Liberation Front and Contras. Also, a protip for the future: communist does not automatically mean bad.
