i'm 47 and in thoses days they showed very little films saturday afternoons saturday nights sunday afternoons now you can't get enough of them.. play away was a great program
Yes, remember this in its later years (late 70s, early 80s). On Saturday afternoons my mum would watch a couple of boring black-and-white films on BBC 2 (Saturday Cinema), then Play Away would come on, an oasis in the middle of all the old films! Now I rather enjoy the old black and white films, and they don't show them on the telly anymore!
My kids loved it. Why aren't these songs and shows on CD/DVD? My grandchildren would love them - even though 'Mr Tumble' has a very special place in their lives now. We have the records - yes vinyl - of all the Playschool and Playaway songs and jokes, but no record player.
I am 44 and i remember the days when we had one black and white television in the house and only 3 channels to choose from. This was a great tune. I was 6 years old when Playaway first started in 1971. I miss those days as a child, i loved those days.
This was definetly not for adults! My dad used to go mental if we turned the tv over to BBC2 on a saturday afternoon while he was watching horse racing, we'd get away with it if he fell asleep! Only 3 channels and 1 tv in the house in those days. It was the one thing that was on telly on a sat pm until after Grandstand, then it was cartoons, Basil Brush, Jim'll Fix It then Dr Who. Can't beat that!
@outofthegreenmist The theme was written by cult folkie Barry Dransfield. His 'serious' stuff is well worth a listen, by the way - try the eponymous 1972 album. Great stuff!
Oh Playaway ws the greatest of all kids shows, - for adults too. I remember Tooni Arthur & brian Cant, but had no idea Jremy Irons & Baldrick were in it! I "spose it was pre Black Adder & Brideshead.

As a child, Brian Cant was my idol. I truly loved that man, he was special and very gifted. (A fan page should be set up)

I seem to remember this as a spin-off of "Play School" - was it on Saturday afternoons? Great song.
