  • Master drummer

  • perfect example that a true drummer doesnt need drums

  • @talobassprog. It is, but only about 10 times as advanced from the Journey days. Do yourself a huge favor and check out everything else he has done since Journey. You won't be disappointed!

  • its this the same guy from JOURNEY ??

  • Wow... amazing!

  • yep...i give up, drumming was obvisouly meant for just steve smith:'(

  • Great!

  • now i want to see what he can do with the entire kit O_O

  • EXELENTE QUE TECNICA X DIOS

  • damn... that was raw.

  • WINNING!

  • i can do it :)

  • @202drummerboy You may be able to do it, but he -to use an overused term- owns it.

  • Just insane!!!

  • AMAZING.

  • What the Fuck :O? Insane!

  • awesome~

  • @Woodn88s or not mate i wernt hating on steve hes my favorite drummer and actually right now im pretty chilled thanks so when i say hes a bald queer take it with a pinch of salt its light hearted...and you clearly must be bald to get offended.

  • @MrHarryAshenden btw i was wondering the same thing about steve, is he really gay or just a little effeminate? for the record i dont want offend anyone, just curious

  • I dont know any bald queers better at drums.

  • @MrHarryAshenden

My guess is you're a bald headed queer who is a suckass drummer

    chill dude

  • wwow i didnt expect him to do all that.

  • Before you can truly achieve art you must first master the technical aspects of your discipline so that they do not inhibit you. This video shows just what an artist Steve Smith is. Steve Smith is one the 5 best drummers in the world because while other drummers may have their moments in the kit he is on a short list of percussionists who, with little effort, has the technique & skills to recreate what they do and possibly best it.

  • che mito...

  • .......= MAX ROACH!

  • @toninodrumlecce it was basically a tribute. he didnt steal it.

  • Whoever said Steve Smith is one of the 25 best drummers in the world is wrong.

He's one of the FIVE best drummers in the world!

  • @arnebarnard Well that would still make the first statement correct since the latter set is a subset of the former...

  • wtf is wrong with guy... nureaall.

  • I wish mr hat were this nice to me. :/

  • what he can do with a full drum set is inimaginable.

  • The man is a genius!

  • My sis and bro-in-law saw him with Vital Information. They were blown away by the whole show. Especially Steve Smith percussion acrobatics.

  • That's so fucking cool! I have never seen that before!

  • lol 1:30 to 2:17 lol

  • i can't believe he can make a hi hat on its own sound as impressive as that! Awesome work!!

  • Freak!

  • dude.

  • who is he hes awesome

  • The "hummer"....

  • Journey' drummer !!!

  • he is a freak, my fav drummer he is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo amazingly awesomely good

  • Well that was boring.

  • @Mauhadeeb28 you are an idiot haha

  • @rith5 And you have no friends.

  • that was awesome!, but still not what buddy rich did...

  • @lesser260 wow you're a tool

  • @rith5 a tool?

  • Dude.....Shit!.......back to the basement.

  • went to like a little 50 person jazz thing and steve smith was the drummer with a 3 piece jazz band

  • What a clown!

  • That stuff at the end was insane lmao. Ace.

  • Oh man! This was sick nasty... I thought I knew Steve's playing well, but I totally didn't know the flashy side of it!

  • 1:57 - 2:13

  • I love the 2 hands on one stick part

  • Coool !!!

  • max roach meets buddy rich?

  • ok time to go commit suicide

  • ?What else is there to say?

  • 哇哇!超利害!GOOD........

  • when i play my hi-hats they sound really monotone.. how can i make them sound groovy??

  • look for a video "carter beauford hi hat aproach"

  • Buddy Rich.

  • @DavidChoiDrumz : Dynamics, my friend. =)

  • yeah i know that dynamics is ther answer, but how can I achieve good dynamics?

  • @DavidChoiDrumz I do this way: Get a groove (the one you want to work on), play 8 bars of it, then play it again in a different tempo. Can be slow or fast. You may fell difficult to play in a different tempo, but play it until you feel confortable with it.

Then, when you feel confortable with it, play with diferent dynamics, as if you were improvising with it.

When you do this, try to record it (Tape, or even cell phone camera). You'll definitely get better in dynamics and perception. =)

  • @DavidChoiDrumz

i believe what you re looking for is accents. when i started drumming, i would play every stroke on the hi hat with the same power/intensity. after a while my wrist started putting more power on some of the strokes (1/2 or 1/4 etc...) and i think that SOMEHOW made it groovier :)

hope that works for you, let me know!

  • god steve is so amazing.. what an asshole!

  • Lol

  • i could do the any way of the week (in my dreams) wow god at hi hat nof siad

  • ohhh...believable hi.hat interesting

    cool++++

  • lmao what a bad ass

  • epic!

  • Beautiful. Yea Steve.

    BUTCH

  • wtf??! the finger roll and the arm thing!?? i think i just crapped my pants!

  • does anyone ever do double hi hat? like double bass pedals?

  • steve gadd

  • @digitaldown well i kno that mike portnoy does it and i got a second hi hat stand for xmas so ive been having some fun with that, not really usin it but its silly fun anyways :p

  • how does he eat spaghetti?

  • this man is huge

  • IT'S COOL!!!! ;D

  • thats amazing. what a legend

  • holy shit nice roll down the arm thing

  • that was pretty beast man.

  • I can't take Steve for more than five minutes at a time. Any longer than that and I'd set fire to my drums out of sheer frustration. That man is pure brilliance.

  • Agreed man.

  • luckily most of his videos on youtube is only 3-5minutes lol

  • Smith is a modern day blessing, mixing todays drumming with everything from the past masters. He is THE LINK to the drummers of yesterday. By the way which he is one of.

  • in the beginning, i thought it was alright, but as the video progressed, my eyes started widening and my mouth started dropping...this guy is...wait for it........LEGENDARY!

  • And just think, he can do it all. From jazz fusion with Jean-Luc Ponty, to arena rock with Journey, to his own groups Jazz Legacy and Vital Information.

  • he's a beast with blast beats too (extreme metal)

  • Yup !!! Talented guy !!!!!!

  • jojo mayer does a modern drummer performance from 98' that has some good stick flips/tricks in it as well. Its on the tube.

  • i ' ve see this yesterday night steve in a very amazing "boy" ....

    ciao from italy

    great steve !

  • He's such a show off :D

    He's great tough!

  • Fooooodaaaa!!!!!

  • Just impressive !

  • Saw him do this live. So crazy, so good...

  • He's amazing. He's so technically proficient and makes it look good too. It's really impressive how his fulcrum is so perfect that he can balance his stick on his forearm and still play.

  • like circus...

  • max roach does it better. you can't beat max roach.

  • max roach was one of his inspirations, id consider this more to be a tribute to max roach rather then a challenge of some sort.

  • in the end it was. cRAzY

  • Amazing, had me at a drum student in 1981

  • I met him yesterday after a show. VERY nice guy. He actually talked with me about drumming for close to 10 minutes. Most pros just play a gig and run, he doesn't.

  • God wat an amazing drummer and guy.....I have nothing but respect for this guy......

  • Hey! Steve Smiths an absolute ledgend and really nice guy! respect him! :)

  • Hes a drummer, they have trouble speaking.

  • ok so wat is a drum solo???? I guess just showing off???? Well then every drummer must be a show off......ur a dumb ass......

  • A drum solo is a collaboration of things you know. Depending on the musician, a drum solo can be very musical in it's performance, and some are just a mix of all kinds of tricks involving rudiments, odd playing, and speed. This is not a typical drum solo, as he is just simply showing what he has achieved with drums sticks and the hi hat. There isn't a whole lot of drum solos involving just the hi hat, which makes this interesting. You'd have to go back to "the greats" to see hi hat tricks.

  • if you could do it, you would show it off too.

  • Max roach is mr hi hat silly..:)

  • That's it.... İ can't say anything over this

  • reminds me of max roach.

  • good call ... steve smith often talks about what a huge influence max roach was on him .

  • wow! ^^

  • Sick!

  • Fuck!

  • I cried a little.

  • Holy hell

    1:00 - 2:17

  • dude this guy would shit on ur life.. he is sick and ur jsut pissy cause he is old and can still play better than u on jsut a hit-hat

  • i'v seen him live at drumland badhoevedorp holland!

  • Steve is excellent, of course... but this is where drumming can really dork out.

  • dork out??The hi hat and snare drum are what separates the players from the wannabees.

  • Its so incredibly true, i never thought of it that way until now haha.

  • He seems pretty proud of himself.

  • did he store the drumstick in his ass?

  • I can't believe he used to play for Journey!

    Don't stop

    Believing!

  • off the hook, so cool

  • no new tricks??? =b

  • jeez steve smith is just ridiculous, and he's funny too lol love this dude
