This movie is extremely underrated. I know it gained a CRAP-ton of controversy when it came out, but after I saw this in class last week, all I could think was "Did I watch the same film as the picketers?" I am not trying to be offensive to those who old their religion dear, but, it is just a movie that is based on a book (not the bible) that explored Christ's humanity. I was actually worried about Willem-freaking-Defoe playing Jesus. He did well, as did Bowie.
God, Scorsese totally screwed this up. All this extra biblical talk is just wild conjures for political gain. I like Scorsese and I thought this would be as bad as people said, but IMHO it is much worse. I like Bowie in this though he usually isn't a strong actor either.
This whole scene is so beautifully done. So understated. How.many directors have the "faith" in their actors to.have them sit side by side WITH.THEIR BACKS TO THE CAMERA!!!!!
I think that very many people don't realize that David Bowie was in this film. He is a very good actor. I don't think many people realize the range of his talent as his fans do. That's too bad. He's soooo talented.
@TheAlle333 Actually the greatest trick pulled on humanity by the Devil is to get people to DOUBT that Christ was crucified. Because in the crucifixion of Jesus is the devil's defeat. Do not be deceived.
@TheAlle333 how would that serve the devil?what could the devil possibly want with the joy and hope of salvation and redemption that is offered by the crucifiction?even if you dont believe its true, at worst its a false hope and comfort and I dont think thats anything the devil could want, its too good
There is what I've read - there is what I've been told - and there is what I wish to be true. It is all opinion. and weither it was written down centuries ago, or staged and filmed years ago makes no logical difference. Firsthand eyewitness account are still hearsay nontheless. Why shouldn't anyone who cares to -'' tell us all a story of the way it used to be, - make it up then write it down- just like HISTORY''
This scene would make a good teaching tool for the study of Class Warfare 101. They should * B O T H * - " go out and count them sometime " - - - and we should all go with them.
@fliegeroh Sorry, I've never seen the movie nor it's cast list. After seeing this clip I have no interest to see a misrepresentation of my Lord. I figured he was Herod based on Luke 23:8 "When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle." It's a shame so many people will use this movie's version of Jesus in their minds. Hard to use truth to measure fiction!
Um.....the Bible's largely fiction, dude. Sorry. The evidence that Jesus even existed is..pretty slim at best. The Bible is not evidence, so don't even try.
I just find it tragic that this film--which really best embodies everything that was cool, that was innovative and most compelling about Christianity....is also hated by them--the idea of Jesus as a man, unsure of his destiny, suspicious of his father, is far more compelling than.....him being "perfect".
Bowie is obviously first and foremost a musician, but his body of work as an actor is really pretty good.
He was widely praised for his Broadway portrayal of The Elephant Man, he starred in the Man Who Fell to Earth and co-starred in the Hunger and Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence.
Then you throw in gems like this scene and the one from Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, among others, and you have a pretty solid resume.
I believe that Bowie also supplies the voice of Satan in this film. That's appropriate since he is an admirer/follower of the work of Aleister Crowley.
I think Bowie would have been better cast as the devil trying to tempt Jesus. Bowie has that otherworldly intelligence which makes him such an interesting artist.

For some reason this made me cringe. Dafoe is too dull, Bowie is not very believable as Pilate, nor does he lend much strength to the role (he's a terrific actor but miscast here I think).
Power is Pontius Pilate's problem. When he calls the "Guard", it sounds as if he's saying "God". His god is the force and violence represented by that guard. He only calls out to "God" to hurt others.
Somehow, I don't think Jesus looked like Willem Dafoe. Nor did Bowie look like Pilate. Scorsese had his head way up his ass when he made this piece of shit
Can't see what the fuss is all about governing the controversy of the film, because it's all about the fleeting moments that passes before a dying person's eyes. The brain has the capacity to do this when placed in extremis, being crucified and so forth.
This is a great movie and a great novel. Anybody who hates this movie should go to Hell. Protestant Christians had nothing to do with this great movie or novel, same with Passion of the Christ.
David Bowie is surprising as an actor in the biblical adaptation of Jesus.

We know the movie is a fictional account and hugely inaccurate, but just to know, this scene is with Herrod, not Pontius Pilate.

1. How poetic to cast a Brit as Pilate!
2. Jesus certainly was more dangerous than some ill-equipped insurgents. He wanted to turn all of human society upside down.
3. Great clash of cultures, here. A Roman would think any religion could produce a magician because to them all gods are equally real.
Jesus was a faith healer, but Pilate had no faith, so there was no way to heal him - so, no miracle.
