the only change from the '03 round to the '06 round was the projectile. '03 used a heavier round nosed bullet, '06 introduced the 150 grain spitzer. nowadays they have boattails...
@cwross1976 there was another change , the cartredge dimensions were changed requiring rechambering , i didnt know about the projectile change !? thats why the springfield model 1903 was restamped 1903 A3 when the final dimensions of caliber .30 government model 1903 . the change was in 1906 thus renaming the cartredge 30.06
caliber 30 1903 later modified in 1906 all bolt guns were then re chaimbered to the revised cartridge . 30 gov model 1906 now called 30.06 gods caliber 2 world wars and korea .3 different rifels , springfield 1903-a3 , garand , bar , also m1919 belt fed or water cooled? machine gun , various aircraft guns till they wised up and switched to .50 which was a scaled up 30.06..there should have been a centinial celibration for this caliber. fun facts for ya
@JohannWendt 20-06 necked down . origin of o6 is fascinating full of history . 30-40 Craig Jorgensen. it was adopted and used in the Cuban campaign 1896 ? Theodore Roosevelt &Rough Riders used this charging San Juan hill. military noticed the caliber underperformed the 7mm MAUSER or was it 8mm the Spanish troops used . this didn't sit well ,so they set to develop a home grown caliber that was better but in .308 caliber .books r ur friend
@JohannWendt yep 20-06 necked down 06. origin of o6 is fascinating full of history . 30-40 Craig Jorgensen. it was adopted and used in the Cuban campaign 1896 ? @daft4life the 30-06 is a 30 caliber cartridge that was introduced to the United States army in 1906. I don't see what part of ohyeahinyofacehaha11's comment is stupid or incorrect.
@EricsTechTalk i didn't say the mini-14 was the cream of the crop i said big daddy the m-14 was, mini is just a civilian version made into a varmit hunter, the m-14 and the m1a1 garand are almost identical. patton was the one who said the garand was the greatest battle implement ever, not me. as for cream of the crop i like all three,
@donteventry99 Ah. I knew the M14 was derived from the garand, but I didn't know the mini was derived from the M14. Funny since minis aren't really as impressive accuracy-wise as full M14s. Hm, you learn something new everyday.
i had a local gun smith i know drill and tap a red dot site in the place of my carbines rear site...complete rabbit pwnage....he did the same for my xd40 but i dont have a vid of my carbine yet...its in the safe...
The .30-06 is 7.62x63mm. The .30 Carbine is 7.62x33mm. The Carbine's round is almost half the length of the Garand's. Simple mistake. But I assure you, the Carbine and Garand uses very different rounds, along with the M16/M4 which use .223(5.56x45mm) and the Thompson which uses the .45 ACP round(11.43x23mm). Isn't Wikipedia wonderful? lol
I own both guns. Carbine and Garand shoot different rounds. period.
The carbine's rounds are very similar to a long pistol round. They look similar to revolver rounds. The 30-06 is just a beast though, it dwarfs the .30 cal. Which is why a lot of soldier had problems w/ the carbine putting enemies to sleep. The rounds just were not deadly enough. Not so for the Garand; you get shot w/ a 30-06, say good night.
If you get hit with a .30'06 anywhere, your gonna hit the ground. Arm, leg anywhere. My grandpa told me my first hunting trip "if it bleeds and a .30'06 doesnt take it down, its meant to live"
Well, I think you need to stay far away from Grizzly,Brown Bear, Polar Bear, Cape Buff, Lions, tigers, Elephants and several other large game animals if you think a 30-06 is magic medicine! True, Even elephants have been brought down with the 30-06 and even lighter rounds but it isn't wise. Shot placement is important.
@z71offroad95 Nonsense. A person can be hit in the leg without falling to the ground. Personally, I know someone who was hit in the leg during military exercise. The bullet was .30 caliber (just because the 30.06 has more powder, it doesn't mean it inflicts more damage, because the bullet is basically the same). Not only did he not fall to the ground writhing in pain, he had to be stopped from beating the crap out of the guy shot him.
@Zyoher yes, the round is a 30 cal, so in the 7.62 and so is the 308 (well its .008 over a 30 cal). there all 30 caliber hell my 30-30 is a 30 cal
the 30 carbine is MUCH shorter then the 30-06, go google images of the 30 carbine and the 30-06, compleatly diffenent size. again the bullet diamerer is the same, the lenght is not.
i think that the m1 carbine has the best of both worlds. accuracy and a higher rate of fire then the garrand, but id still trade my carbine for the thompson any day
Yes the Carbine DOES use a pistol round. It was both accute and small to carry. Yet, to keep it light for Airborne troops to carry, they used a pistol round instead.
Sorry to correct you but the M1 Carbine does NOT use a pistol round. The military designated the round "Cartridge, Ball, .30 caliber, M1." Technically it is an intermediate round because it is larger than a pistol cartridge but still smaller than a full sized rifle cartridge.
Actually, it's not really like that. The 7.92X33mm round the Germans made for the StG44 still had a semblance of a rifle round. Namely a bottle necked cartridge and pointed bullet. While the M1 Carbine was basically a lengthened pistol round. Not a shortened rifle round.
the garand is surely more accurate at long distances than the carbine and more powerful. there are accounts from the korean war where enemy soldiers were shot with the carbine at 300+ yards and their thick winter clothes stopped the bullet. id rather have the garand so not to be limited
what sucks about this gun,is the model has been known for injuries and it is also out of date.sad.but great gun for use back in 60's.oh and your a hillbilly if you like that song.
