  • Hi Koren,

Thanks for doing this video series. I'm new to makeup and though all of my products are for my personal use alone, I like knowing how long products are good for and how to keep my stuff clean. Thanks for going to all the trouble!

  • wish i found you sooner. how do you keep track of the dates of the cosmetics so you can discard them timely?

  • This was sooo very helpful, thanks so much for sharing!!!! xo

  • tarzan music!!!!

  • Hello Koren, I love the fact that you post a video regarding sanitary practices with makeup! What is the name of your intro in this video?

  • enkore i love your videos.. can u shorten the intro.. lol.. and get to the video already lol.. :) thanks for the info.. :)

  • Great information. Thank you!

  • Koren, I have a question and hopefully you can help me.

I bought a cream foundation and a cream concealer from Bobbi Brown in early 2009 I think, and I still haven't used it till now. But after I bought it, I have opened both containers and it has been exposed to the surrounding air.

My question is, are both the foundation and concealer still safe to use or should I just discard it? Thank you very very much if you can help me!

  • HOLY CRAP @ 8:57 thats a REALLY big brush what brand is it??? i hearts big brushes

  • I luv the start of the video!

  • I think its rediculous that there's over 125,000 hits on quite a few of your other video's but only about 15,000 on this series. That's insane. A lot of people wear it but I don't think that many people now how to keep from spreading things from more than just the makeup. I just a post somewhere yesterday where someone said "eye makeup goes bad? I didn't know that!" It makes me never want to go near a tester again to just think about it.

  • This is all really interesting and very helpful, thank you for uploading this.

I've been to certain places here in the UK, mainly cosmetic counters where they will give you a make-over to try to sell the product, they don't cleanse their hands first and some will even reuse the same brushes all day without cleaning them. ew!

  • How come all your MAC products have a little cross thingy on them?

Love the vid. Helped a lot and my skin seemed clearer when i used all these tips!

  • i think that it is so his makeup doesnt get confused with other makeup artists stuff if they happen to have the same product! :D hope that helps! xxx

  • once a MA blew her blending brush to remove excess e/s and stuck it on my eye... I was like aaaaargh nooooo!!! all her mouth bacteria on my eye lid

lol, it wasnt funny at all at the time!!

  • i absolutely love this series of videos on sanitary practice

  • Ummmm... Well go on using your old products if you want. No one is stopping you. All I have to say is Good Luck with your future infections and skin problems! :))

  • I was a Mary Kay consultant for years and I found their disposable mascara spoolies, spatulas, face wipes, lip brushes etc absolutely necessary to maintain a proffessional image. it's a shame you can't buy those things anymore when you're no longer a consultant...haha. But it' was a great starting point for me...I know now how important those things are!

  • what do you do if someone breaks out after you do their makeup? what do you do? i would die...

  • thats why I always ask if they are allergic to or sensitive to makeup products, adn I always ask if theres brands that they are used to - so I try to use those brands.

  • hey, thanks for the tips but before you got to tell us how long loose powders last, the lid "jumped out of" your hand lol. if you're still checking these messages, please respond with when we should discard our loose powders. thanks x]

  • oooh!I never thought about those people who are germophobic like Howie Mandel.I wonder how his makeup artist deals with him? If you ever notice,on deal or no deal, his hands are constantly in his pockets(probably with a sanitizing cloth or something)and he rarely if ever shakes hands. He fears germs terribly.

  • for some strange reason, my continued post won't show up. Anyone know why? I tried 3 times.

  • cont'd from the post below...)So thanks for informing us about asking someone first if we can touch them. It never occurred to me to ask them even if I had sanitized my hands with a gel right in front of them first.

  • FINALLY it posted! You tube has issues.

  • I think it's because he screens his comments :))

  • he has some of his videos on "comments approval" before they will post. I didn't realize that at the time. =D

Yep.He has to approve them first.

  • hey! thanks for the tips!

  • hey enkore, is there a sign for when pressed powder foundations go bad? i have this p/p foundation but i don't know how old it is .. i think it's about 1.5 yrs old but i'm not sure .. it hasn't broken me out or made my skin worse tho, so far.

  • if you notice a patchy discoloration in the surface, thats usually a good sign. if its only 1.5 years, should still be ok.

  • Seriously, you should be a makeup teacher.

I was taking notes! lol =D

  • me too~taking notes

  • lol, GO US!

  • I've heard a lot of people saying they are taking notes on a lot of his videos! XD

  • He's a fantastic teacher and his videos are so informative! It really helps to take notes. =D

    Yay for learning! lol ^_^

  • You look very nice in dark colors!

  • Great Sanitary tips!!! thanks Enkore.

  • Hey Koren,

if I'm doing somebody's Make Up, I'm using MACs foundation pumps instead of using q-tips thats fine too.

  • hey enkore,

what if the product has never been opened, does it have the same shelf life compared to when it has been open? eg. I know mascara has abt 3months, what if I brought it and its not opened? how long would that last?

    thanks lovee ur vids!

  • estee lauder products (including MAC) have a 4-year expiration on their products from the day its manufactured as long as they are NOT opened at all - once air gets in the products, timer starts clickin, even if you didnt use it.

  • my loose powder foundation mostly fell out of the sifter and into the cap because it was left upside down. so now i just leave it upside down and take my brush and get swirl it out of the cap because i don't know how to get it all back in the jar. is this okay and sanitary?

  • it should be ok, i fyou are the only one using the product. And bacteria doesnt really survive well on powders, its too drying for them.

  • where can I get a plastic pallet like that?

  • what did you use to create your intro??? which video program???

We're doing a photoshoot for fun and I've been looking for sanitary practices EVERYWHERE!!! They don't mind but I'm a clean freak haha

    Thank You!!!

  • hey Nancy - I use Sony Vegas

  • This is an awesome video. Thanks!

  • hi koren..what about studio perfect spf 15 foundation from MAC..how long can i keep it?

  • Thanks - good info! very helpful

  • tks soooo much!!!..ur videos r totally awesome!

  • you are the best koren. u are so helpful i watch ur videos religiously. thank you for devoting your time and knowledge to us. really appreciate all ur videos

  • Thank you, Koren! You're once again great.

This is the most important make up lesson but many people unfortunately ignore it!

  • hey enkore! i wanted to know if you visit LA EVER? do you do bridal makeup or book private appointments?

please let me know! i would be honored to have you do my makeup once!

  • hi yavneh - every now and then I find myself in LA. LOL - and yes the bulk of my freelance work is bridals, specially during wedding season. Awe, you are so sweet!!

  • lol the last part was so funny..it did see it jump!! hahaha its not just you

  • This is great information! truth is, sometimes we are in such a hurry we don't pay attention to such details (and then wonder why we get breakouts!). Thank you so much Koren, this video is an eye opener.. *moving on to watching the rest* :)

  • thank you for this series of videos. i do have one question: where can i purchase the stainless steel spatulas for my kit?

    thanks in advance!

  • hey msinsanity - i got mine from a Science Laboratory store and some online. Cinema Secrets also sells stainless steel spatula. Check them out.

  • Hi koren, theres liquid foundation and cream foundation right? When should u use liquid and or cream? which is better for your skin, say like i have a sensitive skin? is it necessary to have both?

  • both formulation is great for sensitive skin. Creams are more popular in the winter when the skin is dryer as its infused with extra moisturizers and emolients.

  • Estee Lauder (who owns MAC) says that all of their products have a four year shelf life, but the actual life after you open the product is printed on the box. Just as fyi for everyone.

  • shelf sorry not shel

  • Hey Koren

was just wondering how do we know how long mac products have been on the shop shel for??

  • well most cosmetic companies have a system where in they keep track on how long products have been in the shelf/store. Then a company department shoots out a list of what to pull down from shelves if they have been there a certain period of time - different products have different pull off the shelf dates.

  • hey enkore!

    you should make a video

    about the bests of things

    like best brand/type

    of lipstick, primer, shadow

    stuff like that

    that'd be awesome!

    thanks

  • Hi Koren, I have just one question - Where can I get the flat silver Mixing pallete?

  • I know! From cinema secrets! Search on google

    I asked that before~~

  • hehe Dashee - yeah Shiya asked, and Cinema Secrets (dot) com

  • :) thanx very much both. I is not easy to find some informations in all the comments :)

  • i love the new intro!

  • Awsome topic!!!(Gave u 5stars 4 it) I've been wondering about shelf-life and sanitation :) Thanks again for the great vid!

  • kore, since you mentioned it in this vid and i've been meaning to ask for a while, what are cream color bases for? are they the same as paint pots or cream blushes?

  • they are cream-based products that are originally used as primers and tints - way before Paint Pots came about. Some are great cream blushes, and a few are great eyeshadow bases.

  • Hi Enkore,

does the shelf life "start" when the cosmeticproduct is produced? or when we start using it?

  • Shelf life start when the product is dispatched to stores to go up on their shelves - usually a few days after it is manufactured.

  • I should be ashamed of myself. My makeup has years and years stored in an aluminum case and I use it only for special occasions. Thanks Koren for all the info.

  • why ur not a youtube partner???

  • what is a youtube partner?:S

  • Koren you´re amazing by putting your knowlegde here for free!! I learn so much from you! you´re adorable!!:D

  • hey Enkore , i love your vids.. anyway what is the best primer for oily t-zones ?

  • hey appleboo - MAC Prep and Prime Skin Visage Original (not the spf 50 one) You can also use MAC Mattifying Gel Texture.

  • I wish you got paid, well, for your contributions to our youtube community! ~ Best, Monique

  • Your videos rock !!! You are too cute... They need to give you a show on tv... you are so more helpful than any shows i've seen... I love Kevyn Aucoin's book Making faces... but having theses videos is so much better ... kind of like Martha Stewart of Make up... LOL... Ha ha Gracias...

  • hi koren was wondering if you use a qtip for foudation or a spatula doesnt it take ages to put it on people?

  • hey Eva - yes, I tend to rely mostly on my spatula as a makeup artist. But if you dont have one, a Q-tip does the job too.

  • Hi Enkore! I'm so glad you did a video series like this. :o)

  • I just want you to know that you are AMAZING!!!

  • where do you get a metal makeup palette? i really want one!

  • hey timber - Cinema Secrets (dot) com

  • What brush do you prefer when applying mineralized powder? Whats the difference between mineralized powder and pressed or blot powders?

  • i love using 182 or 183 on MSFs. The difference is the ingredient. MSF, well, are mineralized powders, and the rest are talcs.

  • You have a lovely laugh!

  • How many hats do you have?

  • haha a lot - i love hats and shoes. More shoes tho! :)

  • sooo, I've had this question for a while, and I guess it's the right time to ask.

If a product isn't used, should one discard it after the same amount of time as a used one?

  • a lot of people tend to keep it longer if its not opened or used. HOWEVER much like any product, people forget that they still have shelf like and expiration. Some brand print this date, some dont.

  • hi koren, i think a lot of people must've asked you this but i haven't come across it yet. where do you get your unique looking spatula? thanks.

  • hey tst - the one in this video I got from Cinemasecrets (dot) com.

  • Koren, this really helped! You're a really great makeup artist and its really reassuring that you care about your clients skin. Thanks alot for the tips :)

  • 2nd!

and stopped freaking out because i had this lipglass and the color spereated from the gloss and it smelled horrible
