2) Canada was independent in the 1880s, when the railroad was built. The Canadian government failed to complete the job so they hired a consortium of American managers and engineers to build the Canadian Pacific. Several of them put their personal fortunes at stake to complete the railroad.
There are a number of Chinese graves along this line close to the upper entrance to the Spiral Tunnel. Many people took credit for this magnificent feat of engineering, but it was the Chinese slaves bought and paid for by the British aristocracy that deserves all the credit.

If you want to get technical, Kicking Horse Pass is only Calgary AB, to Field BC.
Rogers Pass is Field BC to Revelstoke (Golden is in that pass)
