Mott the Hoople is the greatest rock band in the history of the universe, and as someone once said in Creem magazine, "If you don't think so, tough shit."
I`ve alway been a fan. Don`t get me wrong, but it`s a bit hard to make my own descisioun from these pic was is it a good show ?! :) The magick etc ? :) Peace
Oct 6th Hsmith. One of the best shows Ive seen in years. The band are all 60+ and played with the energy of 30 years olds. The crowd loved it. Members of P Scream & Clash in foyer, Joe Elliot supported. Brian & Roger from Queen backstage. Mott influenced different generations & genres of musicians & enjoy a loyal fan base which packs out 5 shows at Hsmith, 35 after the split. It should be an annual event. God knows, we need bands like them now, more than ever before.
Best Of set of MTH livefrom these shows in DVD as well as CD would be bought by most of us I bet because we would rather buy and support them in thanks for all the pleasure we got through our lives from their music. I'm sure the Sex Pistols would also agree as would the Stooges!
REAL rock and roll ain't about technical prowess...its about heart and soul and passion. I'd take a Johnny Ramone or a Thunders over an Eddie Van Halen any day!
The odd bum note or missed lyric doesn't really matter with MTH. Fine musicians definitely , but they were never a note-perfect kind of band anyway . But ,after nearly 40 years of gig going i've yet to see band who made you feel like you belong the way they did/do ; no wonder half the crowd ended up on stage with them !! I was there thursday night and loved every last second of it so thanks for filming and sharing.
Agree, although a bit before my time appreciate them as rock legends with a raw kind of sound and conscious lyrics. Leave the boringly 'proficient' guitar solos to Deep Purple, etc. MTH were an influence on The Clash, well Jones at least. Saw them last night at Hammersmith, loved it!
Glad you had a great time Juan ; we were wondering how younger fans , who'd never seen them before , would react. It's difficult [ and maybe pointless (: ] to classify the appeal of MTH in their pomp , but i think there was a warmth about them that no other band projected. We idolised them alright but felt at home with them too ; the Led Zeps etc. , brilliant as they were , somehow had to be admired strictly from afar. Maybe someone brighter than me can explain why that was !!
I heard Mott the Hoople on the radio today, boy they still sound like a true classic after all these years, glad to see Joe Elliott keeping the faith with this band. His presence is welcome anywhere!! :P
I'm sure they will come. They must need the money. A lot of these guys are probably looking for some kind of golden parachute because nobody is buying records/cd's anymore. I'm certainly not. There's nothing worth buying anymore anyway.
Maybe it's just the vid, but Ian was right on the 'Strings' interview; the energy doesn't appear to be the the same. IMO, the band seems to be 'slogging' thru the songs, but bravo for Buff to be doin' it inspite of his health.
Great and really enjoyed it except for Mick Ralphs woeful guitar playing. He will always be better than me but to be fair if he played that badly in a pub band he'd get booed off. Rest of band were brilliant. So sorry to see Buffin not so well, I always highly rated his drumming. God bless him.
Well, I play guitar in a band and have been playing for many years. I was at the gig and know what I heard. I have nothing against the guy but have to say he was making mistakes all over the place. Hopefully the later gigs were better. I just wish I'd been there on Saturday night with Aerial Bender who is IMHO a better guitarist. Not a bad reply...For a Tosser!
Aerial Bender couldn't really solo.Just play the same notes as the melody. Anybody know about the fistfight w/Ronson & who? in the band? A bit rusty but it would be nice just to be in the same room with these guys again.
Mick Ralphs has done some great work with other bands but for me Aerial's playing more suited Mott's style. Mott The Hoople Live really showcased his basic but very effective style.
Bender couldn't string Ralphs' guitar... and I'VE been playing in a band for 30years and, quite honestly, anyone who thinks that Bender is better knows shit.
No, read my above comments. I have no doubt that Mick is a better all round guitar player but Mott's style was never about technical excellence, more having fun and blasting out the tunes. In that regard Benders playing was IMHO more suited to their style than Micks.
WEll, he couldn't cope with the recorded material on "The Hoople" which had to be changed from guitar based to keyboards based material and then Hunter has himself explained that Bender didn't cut the mustard, thats why he was replaced with Ronson.
Oooooh, now I do disagree! I think it's a belter! Walking with a mountain was a million times better than the version I witnessed the other night as was All the way from Memphis. The medeley on side two builds to a great climax. Cracking stuff but I appreciate it's 'Different strokes for different folks'. You are right about Aerial being replaced and Mick Ronson was the most popular with fans. His name will always be remembered whereas most people won't ever have heard of Aerial. Shame.
I always liked Spooky Tooth's "Spooky Two." Wonderful memories with that one. The rest of Spooky Tooth's output was basically Gary Wright's cotton candied ego trip-sentimental garbage.
"Ceremony" definitely killed the band, although Wright kept putting something out. "Ceremony" must have sounded like a good idea when they were really stoned, or something. When did Bender quit Spooky? I dumped "Ceremony decades ago. Don't know if he's on it.
Ceremony was supposed to be solely billed to Pierre Henry. The band was quite ticked when they got co-billed. Luther stuck with the Tooth through their
How could anybody be so dumb as to play the music in a controversial project in those days & realized they wouldn't get co-billed? Like I said, they must have been really stoned to participate at all. I guess every band was looking for their "Tommy" & "Ceremony" was supposed to be theirs.
You're not getting it, Rhino. Spooky Tooth didn't WANT to be co-billed for Ceremony - the band were just playing session musicians for Pierre Henry. They did NOT want Ceremony to be released as a "Spooky Tooth" album. That said, it really isn't too bad.

True, Joe Elliott is a decent bloke, I remember reading in Mojo how he would go visit Mick Ronson during Ronno's last days and keep him company etc.

Yep, Luther Grosvenor aka Ariel Bender is on Ceremony.
His "Under Open Skies" solo album from early 70 is decent btw.
On the mellow side but I like it.
Lots of guest musicians of the day like Jim Capaldi appear.
He left Spooky after The Last Puff.
