needed emergency arm warmers for a holloween costume (i am being Tonks from harry potter) and this video saved me cutting up a whole teeshirt. THANKS!
Pretty good stuff ^-^ ..Hot Topic and Spencers both priced gloved like these at like 10-20$ but now I can make as many as I want cheaper..but how to do it is pretty obvious
I made 3 pairs... Two, from some old sweaters, solid purple and navy blue. And then I made another pair from an old teeshirt. I loved it sooo much, but I outgrew it. It's Super Mario. So I took the Mario picture from the front, and the word 'MARIO' from the back and one has the picture of Mario, with a patch that says 'NINTENDO' on the palm, and the other says MARIO on it :) Thanks so much for the idea! My Mom had to stop me, cause I was having so much fun! :) I would have chopped all my tops :)
@harbinger251 there's no such thing as fabric scissors. you just need a brand new pair. if you have used the scissors to cut paper, or anything besides fabric, they will be too dull.
OMG IT WAS SO WEIRD .. as soon as you said brown I thought of my brown socks I bought like forever ago and I wondered what happened to them Lmaoo and then you pull out the socks and I'm like HEYYYY there they aree lmfao ! what a coincidence
geEz...LOL...so.. i had nothin to do yesterday.. and i was to0 lazy to go out and buy socks.. so i just tore my stripped tee.. and made it into small fingerless arm warmers and 2 long ones...LMAO...they're ver nice tho...
What if i want to wear arm warmers but they keep sliding down my arms? Is there something we could do like add something to the end so it clutches better?
@evilsmiley You can put that fitted part (the top portion of the sock) up the arm, instead of around the fingers, that way it's more snug. Then the part around the fingers would be a bit looser, but you could always sew it to make it more snug.
@evilsmiley If the part around the fingers is comfortable for you, not too loose, then just cut a thumb hole & go. But if the fabric is way too big, you might have to sew a new seam along the length of the hand part to make it smaller. You could cut along the part the goes down the edge of the hand from pinky to wrist & remove the excess fabric, then sew back up. It's way easier with a machine to do a seam, but it's doable by hand, as well. Hope that makes sense.
@twixtbetwixt Yes that makes complete sense and very helpful, i will try it sometime. But i'm also asking about the higher part of the arm up by the elbow where the fabric ends there. What if that keeps falling down? Do i just do the same thing you said to do with the wrist part?
@evilsmiley I think if you just flip the sock around, opposite of how I show it in this video, it should stay up by itself. It has a lot of elastic there. I have fat arms, so on me, the elastic fits better around my hand. It's too snug to go around my upper arm comfortably. If you have skinny arms, then just put the elastic portion up the arm, then the ankle of the sock will go around the fingers. Or try buying childrens knee high socks, which are smaller.
@twixtbetwixt If it still keeps falling down, then I don't know what else to try. It will get a lot more complicated... like buying elastic ribbon & sewing that in, or just buying normal ribbon & attaching it so you can tie the arm warmer tight around the arm.
Great video! I followed your instructions and instantly I had a cute pair of arm warmers!!! Anyone watching this video should make a pair for themselves. Fun and easy! THANKS :)
@BarrysDaughter I don't own anything that is long enough to cover my hands. And sometimes I want to wear something with short or 3/4 length sleeves & still keep my hands warm ;)
Just don't get it sorry, If I am cold I put on a jumper or a cardigan don't see the point in buying socks to cut them up and sew them when you can by fingerless gloves for pennies??
@BarrysDaughter because I havent seen any fingerless gloves for $5 a pop ;) LOL I bought some on etsy & they were about $20 a pair. SO i made my own, is all. I havent seen any that cheap at the stores around here. =) You dont even have to sew these, cuz they dont unravel.

Love it! I like that you didn't use plain old thread..Ive done this before many times but not with yarn ect. You just gave me some cool ideas I can do using contrasting colors to stitch the thumbholes up..Thanks girl!
I LOVE that you made this video! I wear them all the time, I've made them out of socks, leggings, fishnets, pantyhose anything I could find! I like that you showed everyone how to sew the thumb hole, it takes a bit of time, but lasts. Very Cool!
I love all your videos! They are always good and worth the watch. I did this after watching your video and the turned out freakin great -squee- 5 stars as always
LOVE the yellow-bow socks and the black-and-pink argyles!
Definitely think securing the edge of the thumbhole is a great idea, just to keep it from fraying or unraveling too much in the wash. I like a close blanket stitch for that kind of securing. :)
Thanks! I have no idea what a close blanket stitch is! hahah I will have to look it up! I am pretty bad with hand sewing, cuz I've never had an opportunity to do much, except with a machine. (or sewing up a tiny hole in my clothes) I really want to start getting more involved with it though. I've seen some gorgeous upcycled clothes on etsy & I know I can make my own cheaper. I just need a serger ;p And a little practice!
A blanket stitch is a loop (or whip stitch) like you already did, but you slide the needle through the loop before you pull the stitch tight. Like on the edge of Western-style blankets or airline blankets... and doing them close together makes a really secure stitch.
I'd LOVE a serger, it would make sewing knits SO much easier, but they're rather expensive.
Got any favorites on etsy to look at? I love upcycling my clothes and I'm always looking for new inspiration!
You should try craigslist for a serger! I saw one posted, brand new in box, for $35. I havent had a chance to email the person & find out if they still have it (was posted like a month ago.) and I've seen a lot for about $100. Many people have no idea what they are selling LOL Or it was a relatives that got handed down & they need to get rid of the "junk" =)
I'm twixtbetwixt on etsy, so if you just look me up over there you will be able to see my favorite shops ;)
I have the same nail product, I liked it when I put it on, but then I took a soak in a bath, and every nail started peeling! Polish peeled off completely, have you had any problems with peeling with the hard as wraps?
Certain colors are worse than others, but for the most part I find that it stays put very well. But i never have time for baths, unfortunately. They do have to put up with VERY frequent hand washing & weird chemicals at work. LOL
haha that's one of my issues too! I guess you have to have a leg the size of a toothpick to wear thigh-high socks. These things fit snugly & comfortably on my arm, so i guess i need 12" thighs to wear them how they were intended! (yeah, right!) LMAO
Brilliant idea... i buy my own arm warmers and theyre always too lose.. =[ i never thought of socks.. the material will be MUCH better for chicken-bone arms =D
hehe If you have really thin arms you may be able to get away with children's leggins or long sleeves shirts - just cut off the legs/arms. Those you can always "try on" at the store to see how the fit it.
Or you can use a small long sleeves shirt of your own.
you are creative, good i was dying to get some pair of hand warmers but now you give me the imagination of how to make some for my self thank you april
yeah but then I would be scared of them fraying too much in the wash! oh well, I will have to relearn my sewing skills - I could do it when I was younger - embroidery and everything - but haven't done so for years!
Most socks wont fray that much. Havent you ever had a hole in the toe of your sock? LOL It just stays there forever. Plus, if you only spend like $5 for a pair of socks, it's not that much money being wasted if by chance they DO get ruined! ;)
lol - yes I have had holes in my sock toes, but usually chuck them at that stage! I will see if I can find a cheap pair of socks to try it on, but the cheapest knee high ones I've seen so far are 15CHF. But will give it a go anyway - even though I will get strange looks from Alex wearing them lol.

lol - yes I have had holes in my sock toes, but usually chuck them at that stage! I will see if I can find a cheap pair of socks to try it on, but the cheapest knee high ones I've seen so far are 15CHF. But will give it a go anyway - even though I will get strange looks from Alex wearing them lol.

You're so awesome Aprille!
Now I know what to do when I get holes
in the toes of my knee socks instead of
tossing them like I have been :D Thanks!

Thank you!
I believe I am wearing the Sheer Pink Gloss from Sally Hansen Hard as Wraps. I could be wrong on the color, cuz I don't have it here with me.
