Very likely this film is later than Lateran Pacts of 1929, since the Popes, from 1871 to 1929 described themselves as prisoners in the Vatican and refused to appear at Saint Peter's Square or at the balcony of the Vatican Basilica "coram populo", that is, facing the mob

I care. Please do not continue to state that this is Saint Pius X when it is Pope Pius Xi. Why can't you simply correct your mistake? Also, this film is too clear and too regular a speed to be from the 1920s. Also, form the announcer's voice, my guess would be the mid to late 1930s.

@uudrakgvens94 I dont know. It was probably a few weeks after he was crowned Pope ( He was crowned on February 6 1922). Im guessing this footage was about Late March or early April.

@montbuy Pius X died in 1914. There are examples of dialog recorded in movies that early on a separate disc but this type of news reel footage. THis is clealry a later Pius, with Pius XI, (1922-1939) the most likely one.

@RiccardoP1983 I have to dissagree with you my friend. The Arms on the balcony could belong to the Camerlengo of the Holy See. It was possible to get His coat of arms up there instead of the Pope's.

KnightOfGodsCourt is right. You dont have to always look at the Papal arms. The terrible video quality is all distorted. There is no color (just black and white), and the faint voice I can tell is very Deep and wouldnt sound anything to Pius XI to me. There could be more flaws than conclusions or solutions here in this clip. SanctusMatrisTemplum Has a video of Pius XI blessing the crowds. If you haent check it out and make up your own conclusions. During the period in which Pope St. Pius X lived, we certainly saw a flourishing of some truly great pontiffs; i.e., Gregory XVI, Bl. Pius IX, Leo XIII, St. Pius X of course, followed by Benedict XV, Pius XI, Pius XII and finally Bl. John XXIII. Unfortunately, the popes that followed Bl. John were of a decidedly inferior stamp, starting with his un-holiness Paul VI, of unhappy memory. Let's hope that St. Pius' namesake society doesn't kow-tow to the accursed spawn of V2, the Novus Ordo Sect.
