One underskirts had snaps on them, I think, allowing Ashton to pull the sides apart so she could lower then skirt. As far as I know, snaps hadn't been invented yet.
That´s not the first time she sold herself. she sold herself to a husband she never liked, to a suitor whom he wanted to kill her brother-in-law, and so one... the only thing which makes her cry is that this time it´s not more her the master of the situation, that there is a man as evil as herself who directs her and not vice-versa as before
And people always say Ashton didn't have feelings. She hid her feelings for El and did whatever he wanted because she loved him and James' reaction was so odd. I'll never figure that one out.
His reaction is just an expression on how all of his idealistic hopes have been destroyed, including Ashton. He knows that she's been having affairs at this point and just accepts that he can't do anything about it, in the same way he can't do anything about the government not doing what he wants.
