Wow, Clydie is just amazing. A voice like that is everything that is great about soul music. Like hearing Jackie Wilson for the first time, pure undiluted bliss.
Clydie has a beautiful, silky voice. It's easy to see why she was so popular as a backup singer - usually when you have 3 part harmonies, you have a real birdy soprano on type, a real low, almost-tenor on the bottom to give it that loud, gospel "lift", and a really pretty, soft voice like Clydie's right in the middle. Earl Jean Mcrea played a similar role in The Cookies.
She's on a lot of hit records as a background singer, but her two songs ('missing my baby' the other) were great pop songs in the phil spector tradition
Fantastic. Clydie went on to form The Blackberries with Vanetta Fields and Shirlie Matthews (check them out backing Humble Pie on 'Black Coffee'). Clydie and Vanetta also sang some chillingly beautiful backing vocals on The Stones 'Exile on main st'....the fade out of 'let it loose' never fails to move me.
An amazing singer, with a terrific work pedigree. From the Raelette, through her solo stuff, and on. THIS IS what a talented singer sounds like.

Sound's good (thanks), but the video a bit better on "Clydie King - The Thrill Is Gone (Shindig! 1965)". :)

Awesome!

She could have fit in with the Supremes!! Clydie's voice would have fit better with Mary and flo over Dianna's

What she listens to is her business, rather like it's yours to make glib, off-hand remarks.

I first saw this in '64 on SHINDIG.
Within a month or so I had discovered Clydie,
Betty[e] LaVette, The Supremes, The Ronettes, The Shangs., The Blossoms, and fifty other major talents that I still follow to this day.
The show was responsible for a life -long passion for soul/pop & Motown in particular.
Thank you for posting such a great memory.
