That's the normal recovery rate of the Wild Wing. And relaxing and not panicking is most definitely the best way to go about any Mario Kart game, especially if you're on one of the tougher courses.
Overhazard doesn't have fast recovery, it's just that the acceleration of the Wild Wing is high (Sorta). If you want to have fast acceleration, use something like the Booster Seat or the Dolphin Dasher. You can also do something called burning out which is done on vehicles with low acceleration like the Sprinter and Flame Runner (Bowswer Bike) which is when you drift in place.
The shortcut on DK Mountain occurs once you go from the gray volcano surface to the dirt jungle surface. You can go across the gap if you make a sharp right and land on a later part of the course.
I'm in the same predicament as you, I always go with people with lower VRs than me, if you don't come first or second you lose points, it's so unfair. :(
How did you race against Anarion on Dec 10 09 A? I mostly play against hackers I don't know.

Thanks. You can also lose Blue Shells in cannons but that's more of a luck-based thing than anything you can really plan for.
