It's sad watching this and seeing how Mirai has since regressed in the last couple years. She seemed on her way to being a World champion just a couple months later and it's been mostly downhill since.
Then on the layback spin (internationally she routinely gets ALL +3s for GOE), one judge here gave her a +3 and another gave her a -1??? And this system is supposed to reduce judging insanity???
If you look at the scoring sheet, the judges really screwed her on this. For example, the stunning double axle-triple toe that Scott called "beautifully landed" was "underrotated" according to the official. It doesn't look that way at ALL to me. And for her to get the same artistic marks as Flatt is insane. I don't think the US judges truly understood/understand the new judging system, considering Nagasu is scored much higher in international events.
Such an outstanding performance of Mirai! I always come back to see this I no longer see Caroline Zhang because she no longer impressed me as much like she used to do. I don't like Rachael Flatt's ugly spirals. Poorly executed. I just wish she would omit it from her programs and to focus more on her jumps that she's able to do with such an energy coming through from her.

The WAY Mirai skates is the entire package the International Skating Community looks for. Despite the favoritism within her own country, Rachel will be downgraded for her artistry far more harshly than Mirai will on an international stage. It's inevitable.
Rachel Flatt has so much more personality in her program that is why she came first. Most of these Asian skaters look the same and skate the same there is NO variation. All Flat and predictable.

Yes, me too. I thought Mirai won Nationals hands down... her LP score was way too low. I was shocked and disappointed in the judging.
For me Rachel Flatt shows me jumps and not much else vav musicality, spins, performance or footwork. R's skating and appearance remind me of Elayne Zayak, a US Champ in the early '80's who was all about the jumps.
Guys are obscessed about jumps cuz they can't do the other elements as good as the girls. So leave 'em to it is my wish. Girls ROCK!
This was the most inspiring and breathtaking performance of the entire competition! She deserved gold for sure. If only we had three spots...Ashley truly deserved to go to the Olympics! She was amazing!

@Rperfilyev It the COP (Code of Points), skaters have the potential to get extra points for executing an element well. But let's say one skater puts their hand down when they jump or doesn't execute an element to the judge's expectation, you get negative GOE points. Each judge can give anywhere from -3 to +3. Hope I explained it well :3
She's just so enjoyable to watch. I am very excited to see her compete this weekend. And on the Yuna note I have to agree, I find her skating ok at best. Sort of like Rachael Flatt who is technically very sound but dull to me. I much prefer skating that is more artistic then technical.
@ChariceBillboard During the GPF, Rachel Flatt was injured. For her to go out and skate at all was extremely brave of her, and she pushed through both her programs as best she could. We can't ask for more than that, unless of course we want to be jerks.

She stumbled out of a triple flip, stumbled once, singled a triple toe, and stubled again. A lot of other skaters put a lot more heart into their programs than Mao and were much more deserving.
@strawberrykiwi20a look at Yuna's skating in 2010 world skating competition. that was terrible program. that was more terrible than Mao's Olympic program.
@yukivmao I don't think that was fair either. Yuna couldn't enter one of her spins, then she didn't finish a spiral sequence, she fell on one of her jumps, did a waltz jump instead of a 2Axel. Mao probably should've won worlds. Yuna just won world because she won the Olympics, the judges were biased. We could sit here and fight about the topic but apparently we both have different opinions and they aren't going to change. I personally don't think Mao should've placed but that's just my opinion.

Even if she got downgrades on 3 jumps, the technical content and the quality of spins, positions, spirals, edging, footwork--not to mention speed--was better than Flatt's. She also has so much more artistry--amazing that the audience and commentators thought she had clearly won and then she didn't (and it wasn't even that close!)
She is so amazingly graceful and has wonderful technique. I don't understand how she placed second at U.S. Nationals. She is very good and she'll be very successful in the next few years!!
I was always a fan of Rachael Flatt....but now watching their programs back to back....Rachael did not deserve gold in this competiton, Mirai was definatly better this time around.
mirai has everything except choreography....her choreography isnt as pretty and soft as yuna kims. Otherwise I'd say she could beat yuna kim in a couple years considering that she has great jumps and much better flexibility (spins & spirals) than yuna
After her FS in Vancouver british commentator said it was second (behind Yuna) best program that night. I'm sure she will be a big personality of figure skating in the future
@michellequeen1980 I agree I also agree that slightly better choreography would work for her... she is VERY talented. She HAS to keep her head in pressurised situations though. If she does that... wow, she'll be great for all of us to watch in the future.
@PubliusAfricanus It IS hard but hopefully she can turn adversity to her advantage... I think international judges have recognised her as a talent after all, 4th in your first Olympics at 16 years old is impressive and she was 1st after the short at Worlds so maybe!!!
Mirai is cute but her parents and her coach need to tell her to just shut up when talking to the media. She has a big mouth and says some pretty ugly things that are very unattractive. Pretty young people are always more attractive when they don't say a lot. Just be cute and shut up, and you're way ahead.
Mirai is better than Rachel.

@ChariceBillboard During the GPF, Rachel Flatt was injured. For her to go out and skate at all was extremely brave of her, and she pushed through both her programs as best she could. We can't ask for more than that, unless of course we want to be jerks.

I don't think there will be any better skater than Yuna in the future, but Mirai can be centainly better than Mao. I think she is better now

I love her! and I'm lucky enough to live close to her parents' Japanese restaurant in Arcadia, Los Angeles. My family and I always go there. Her dad is a very nice and cheerful guy.

@yukivmao Just because someone can land a triple Axel doesn't give them a pass to win the Olympics. A lot of other things play into it and Mao also acted like a spoiled brat on the podium, she didn't even smile. Mao had a terrible Olympic program.

She stumbled out of a triple flip, stumbled once, singled a triple toe, and stubled again. A lot of other skaters put a lot more heart into their programs than Mao and were much more deserving.

@yukivmao I don't think that was fair either. Yuna couldn't enter one of her spins, then she didn't finish a spiral sequence, she fell on one of her jumps, did a waltz jump instead of a 2Axel. Mao probably should've won worlds. Yuna just won world because she won the Olympics, the judges were biased. We could sit here and fight about the topic but apparently we both have different opinions and they aren't going to change. I personally don't think Mao should've placed but that's just my opinion.

@ChariceBillboard She had three downgrades that's the only reason why..... idk why those jumps were downgraded. Had they not been I think it would have been a lot closer.

Even if she got downgrades on 3 jumps, the technical content and the quality of spins, positions, spirals, edging, footwork--not to mention speed--was better than Flatt's. She also has so much more artistry--amazing that the audience and commentators thought she had clearly won and then she didn't (and it wasn't even that close!)

I was always a fan of Rachael Flatt....but now watching their programs back to back....Rachael did not deserve gold in this competiton, Mirai was definatly better this time around.

mirai has everything except choreography....her choreography isnt as pretty and soft as yuna kims. Otherwise I'd say she could beat yuna kim in a couple years considering that she has great jumps and much better flexibility (spins & spirals) than yuna

After her FS in Vancouver british commentator said it was second (behind Yuna) best program that night. I'm sure she will be a big personality of figure skating in the future

@michellequeen1980 I agree I also agree that slightly better choreography would work for her... she is VERY talented. She HAS to keep her head in pressurised situations though. If she does that... wow, she'll be great for all of us to watch in the future.

@PubliusAfricanus It IS hard but hopefully she can turn adversity to her advantage... I think international judges have recognised her as a talent after all, 4th in your first Olympics at 16 years old is impressive and she was 1st after the short at Worlds so maybe!!!

Mirai is cute but her parents and her coach need to tell her to just shut up when talking to the media. She has a big mouth and says some pretty ugly things that are very unattractive. Pretty young people are always more attractive when they don't say a lot. Just be cute and shut up, and you're way ahead.
