I have loved this piece since I was a girl of 12 or 13. Everytime I listen to it I cry. It is such beautiful music that gets right into your soul. He plays with such feeling. How I envy great pianists that they play this gorgeous music and are able to feel it that much more that those of us who just watch and listen. This piece makes you transcend to another place not in this world and I am not on any drugs!! lol
What a jaw-dropping performance! The amount of energy and focus necessary to perform this piano concerto is intense. It could easily be compared to an athlete performing at the Olympics.
I was also impressed by the depth of emotion he could convey through his performing at such a young age. Rachominoff was a genius to have composed such a gorgeous work of music but even he was not as young as Kissin when he performed the work.
We get so caught up is the daily moment that sometimes what used to be our favorite things get buried beneath the rest - forgotten like those clothes that get pushed to the back of the closet. Sometimes by accident something comes along to shuffle the pile and bring them back to our attention. Then its a double sweetness of having our old favorite thing and having it new all over again. I love it when that happens. I fell like I've never heard this before - I am brought to tears.
Il talento compositivo di Rachmaninoff unito a quello esecutivo di Kissin hanno creato quel quid spettacolare che penso faccia commuovere il mondo per la sua bellezza
Not even a piano student can ruin this piece, it is too beautiful. I once sat in the middle of a far too big music accademy orchestra on a far too small stage at rehearsal of this movement, turning the pages for the young pianist. There is nothing more exhilarating like sitting right within when those tremendous melting strings at 4:10 come out of nowhere and hit you without any warning. It is not just Kissin who is great in this recording. The orchestra & conductor do a marvellous job, too!
Futhermore, [for -500 YouTube points no doubt] the finale is **weird**. 5:06 is where Rach himself pauses and buggers off to the pub for a couple of vodkas with his best m8. On his return he trips over the dog, and thinks "wtf? Oh! Oh yeah -- I was like, finishin' this b4 tomorrow wuznt I?" .. Then from the bedroom, "Sergei Rachmaninov!! I did not marry you to desert me for that damned piano!" "Oh, yes my love, one moment... done in a jiffy, dear!" Hence 5:06-5:29 (puts cat out...)
The majesty of 4:12 on is sublime. Yet it undelines my controversial comment a year ago that there are *significant sequences* where *nobody listens to the PIANO*. Be honest -- which part would YOU be whistling in the car as you're trying to suggest this masterpiece to your kids?
Why does anyone bother pointing out mistakes? :| This is a performance on the Proms, not a bloody piano exam. And even the best concert pianists aren't perfect.
@doctordrums8 Regarding, Mr. Kissin's fatigue, It is very dubious whether you were present at Mr. Kissin's Carnegie Hall debut where he played about 20 different pieces from the Romantic era. In addition to over 30 annual performances! I highly doubt that the amalgamation of the magnitude of the BBC Proms and Rach no.2 would have overwhelmed Mr. Kissin that would have caused the mistake in question. He made a mistake. You can NOT deny that!
@doctordrums8 A technical mistake? A technical mistake would be holding the pedal past the appropriate note, not adding two whole measures! Your music teacher prefers this way (specifically the part in question-b/c u didn't say otherwise i.e. you teacher doesn't prefer it this way) than your teacher is screwed in the head. "I can NOT deny"? How can I deny something you literally typed? That in itself is a mistake!
a technical mistake here and there doesn't matter thaaat much... as long as he is able to deliver a message to the audience through this music, it's fine. that's the most important part
Also, I caught the mistake you heard in the cadenza. That's because he was playing it at an intense speed, at an intense volume, in front of thousands of people, after playing Russian music (the equivalent of piano Thrash Metal) for 20 minutes straight. Would you yourself not be even a little bit fatigued?
I've performed this concerto in front of a thousand people before. And Mr. Kissin puts me and everyone else I've ever heard to shame. You can NOT deny the emotional feel and technical superiority displayed over these 6 videos. This is Rachmaninoff played how it is SUPPOSED to be played. In fact, my piano teacher said she likes Kissin's performance more than Rachmaninoff's himself . So please, keep your rantings in check. This man could out perform you with a yamaha 44 key.
@wnsbug This was written in the early/mid-20th century. Rachmaninov was a *LATE* Romantic. And was considered droll by many of his equals...but this is a lovely piece. If you want the peak of Romanticism, check Strauss or Tchaik. :)
@TheMusicmanMB Although arguably the "peak" could be the word to describe the high point before romanticism merged into 20th century, hence the peak being the time of the late romantics. :)
@MrTripulantedante I point out mistakes like these b/c I've performed the Concerto. Therefore, when I point out errors pertaining to something you can't understand that's not my problem. But you're right my comment is pure garbage! It's actually constructive criticism. Although, what is pure garbage is your English grammar and syntax or lack thereof.
@avb20540 Thanks! I heard it for a few reasons: The mistake wasn't so slight: there were one or two wrong notes, and he lost control of one whole measure and repeated it, he smiled at the end of the cadenza--a usual sign that a musician erred, that cadenza is one of my favorite parts in the 3rd movement, and finally, I'm obsessed with this entire Piano Concerto and have heard it countless times.
@LegendOD20 is amazing how someone can have the gall to point out errors in a concert so hard to play like this, and from the seat of your room. Your comment is pure garbage!
Perfectly utilized when married to Lean's film "Brief Encounter." One of my favorite films and this piece is used as the soul of the film. That film and this piece is a reason to live.
I always cry when I hear this piece. And I'm always listening to Rachmaninoff, so I'm always tearing/crying... My roommate gives me awkward glances; I think she thinks I have severe mental issues LOL. It's the worst when I listen to this beautiful music as I fall asleep. It seems like I'm crying myself to sleep hahaha!
This concerto is a symbol of human feelings. Rachmaninov could perfectly pass his feelings in a piece of paper. In my opinion je's one of the BEST musicians/composers ever. A true genius who had something that many nowadays ''artists'' lack of - talent and emotions. P.S. Kissin is a supeb pianist!
I guess all of us have a personal story with Rachmaninoff's no. 2... one of the greatest evidences of the universality of music - humanity's true universal language. Who among us doesn't have a memory linked to these themes...? In my case, that's how my soul feels love. The perfect way to say "I love you" in music - sweet and passionale, delicate and explosive - in all ways possible - forever and ever and a day ...
Kissin makes us almost beg for those soft notes. Dolce, sempre dolce and then he builds is up and is not shy to hit fortissimo . Beautiful. Bravo. Rach with attitude.
My heart goes out to Rachmaninoff to have created such a magnificent and breathtaking composition, and I boldly thank God through Christ Jesus for creating us humans with such capacity to do such things. AMEN.
Man, this was so good I'm almost afraid to listen to another interpretation of this because it might chip away at the greatness of the memory of this one.
I have mixed reaction to this ending. 4:12 is undoubtedly epic - it's a marvellous piece of music, but from 5:08 onwards I feel it's let down dramatically by a piece of writing that's very cheesy and nearly childish, especially the orchestra's score. It's nearly an anti-climax after all the powerful emotion from 4:12 to 5:00, and indeed throughout the whole concerto. I think it's such a shame that a marvellous concerto has 30 seconds of cheese slabbed onto its end.
@Lixivium What do you mean by that? I don't hate this piece at all; to the contrary. I love it. Neither do I hate Kissin, since I have no reason to. I just don't like the part from 5:08 to the end. I think that's reasonable.
@CadwnYMur I think it's deliberately meant to be like that. It's a concerto, after all, not some philosophical Mahler, Wagner or Beethoven. I'm not as familiar with the 3rd concerto, but I think Rach 3 last mvmnt has a similar ending - huge emotional climax where the big tune is played together, then a much lighter, presto finish. Tchaikovsky 1st also similar - after the thundering octaves passage, another light ending. After that outpouring of heartfelt emotion, everything ends happily...
You may be right. It's just my personal taste when I regret that the piece doesn't end with the theme starting at 4:10 instead of a new mini-theme. I personally prefer the ending of Rach 3 (as in the very final seconds) because I think it carries its momentum more effectively. For me, this loses momentum at around 5:05, while the ending of Rach 3 is much more powerful to my mind. I know that the signature is common to both pieces, but that's how I see it.
I'll just add that of the concerti, the 3rd movement is my least favourite in both. The 2nd movement of Rach 2 is sublime, but it is hard to resist Rach 3's cadenza...
Raсhmaninov has secret, his music is dangerous for some sensitive souls.
Seems to me, that only very deep musician can transfer this , Richter is the closest to this mystery. And Kissin - further, than Richter, despite of all his shine.ё
this is so freaking beautiful!!!! i just saw this guy play a whole night of chopin and prokofiev. the best night i have had in a long time seeing live music
Can everybody please stop leaving mildly disparaging comments about Mr Kissin's hair. Everyone knows that musos are too busy to get it cut any time soon, as it takes them a lot of time to get from one side of the school to the other. Have YOU ever had to carry a piano from PE up two flights of stairs to the music rooms, huh? Hmmm... Thought as much.
What lyricism! The emotions he can elicit from this concerto are varied and genuine. His tonal colors are complex and wonderful. This is surely one of the greatest pianist in the 21st century. Rachmaninov was a genius in performance and composition to write this masterpiece!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
He has everything about each pianist could dream, He has fame, technique, musicalship. But one very importent thing he does not have - life expereince. He did not has hard life(good for him of course) but in art it is sometimes very importent. It has for example Rachmaninoff himself, Richter, Lipatti and others greats, This guy don't have it, but it does not mean he is bad pianist, He is wonderfull. But he is like 14 years old guy.
Stating that the 39 year-old Kissin is 14 years old is not an opinion. It is a misstatement of fact. Just calm down and enjoy the beautiful music. LOL
Wow that was perhaps the most double-standard statement of the century. First you tell him to keep his asshole closed, then you say "be polite!" HAHA!
Kissin, as always, you never cease to amaze and impress. I dont know why people say his performances are "dry". I always get something emotional from his performances.
Brilliant performance both by the orchestra and, of course, the undisputed master of Rachmaninov, Kissin. A perfect partnership. Also have the feeling that the occasion (Albert Hall, Proms. etc.) didn't hurt any. It's so damn good it's hard to believe it's a live performance.
A fantastic performance marred only by the retarded camera work and the wretched breaks in the middle of the movements. Cuts off too soon at the end. Sorry, great work by Kissin!
@tinck93 YES and the part you're talking about (which really starts at 4:09 for people who want to click on the comment) is like the gratifying moment of the whole concerto--and what makes it so is previously the orchestra and piano each played that theme twice separately...but then TOGETHER...omG...one can probably only appreciate it fully if he has either heard it before and/or has a musical mind.
@tinck93 I LOVE 4:12!!!!! This is one of the main themes of this movement. Very Rachmaninoff - you could hear similar tones in Rach 3 final movement as well!
What kind of person would dislike this?!

@pianoandvideogames usually cadenza is included in the first movement of a concerto. this is the third movement. that's why

Lixivium 1 year ago 2
@Lixivium What do you mean by that? I don't hate this piece at all; to the contrary. I love it. Neither do I hate Kissin, since I have no reason to. I just don't like the part from 5:08 to the end. I think that's reasonable.
CadwnYMur 1 year ago
@CadwnYMur Thank you so much for sharing those insights with us. "Cheesy," "Childish" hmm...
assindiastignani 1 year ago
@CadwnYMur I think it's deliberately meant to be like that. It's a concerto, after all, not some philosophical Mahler, Wagner or Beethoven. I'm not as familiar with the 3rd concerto, but I think Rach 3 last mvmnt has a similar ending - huge emotional climax where the big tune is played together, then a much lighter, presto finish. Tchaikovsky 1st also similar - after the thundering octaves passage, another light ending. After that outpouring of heartfelt emotion, everything ends happily...
physphilmusic 1 year ago
@physphilmusic
CadwnYMur 1 year ago
@physphilmusic

But he is like 14 years old guy.

musicpiano14 2 years ago
Stating that the 39 year-old Kissin is 14 years old is not an opinion. It is a misstatement of fact. Just calm down and enjoy the beautiful music. LOL
salviati 2 years ago 3

Excellent! I enjoy it often.

A fantastic performance marred only by the retarded camera work and the wretched breaks in the middle of the movements. Cuts off too soon at the end. Sorry, great work by Kissin!

@tinck93 agree 412 is one if the best parts in qll of music
RepofReason 1 year ago
@tinck93 YES and the part you're talking about (which really starts at 4:09 for people who want to click on the comment) is like the gratifying moment of the whole concerto--and what makes it so is previously the orchestra and piano each played that theme twice separately...but then TOGETHER...omG...one can probably only appreciate it fully if he has either heard it before and/or has a musical mind.
pianoandvideogames 1 year ago
@tinck93 I LOVE 4:12!!!!! This is one of the main themes of this movement. Very Rachmaninoff - you could hear similar tones in Rach 3 final movement as well!
