You are right I misquoted her. She said that it was "a task that is from God" and I said she said it was "a task from God." My way is much pithier and frankly better, but she was not in a hurry. In my own defense, I don't think the meaning has been compromised much.

That wasn't quite what I meant.
The way you have it, Palin was stating that Iraq was simply a task from God. (like some sort of crusade) Palin was really saying (praying) that our soldiers did what was right in Iraq and to make sure that the mission in Iraq was a task from God. (in other words, a good mission, not an evil one)
I'm not religious at all, and I get uneasy around prayers, but she wasn't making Iraq out to be a holy war.

Kmardes, she was praying for the troops and for our leaders to make sure it was a just war. Praying at all makes me uncomfortable, but this sort of thing doesn't BOTHER me. If she was saying that this was some sort of holy war, you would have a point, but she isn't. Equating this with the lunatic, murderous sentiments of those who kill in the name of Islam is idiocy. You're embarrassing yourself.

aard, she CERTAINLY IMPLIED that it was a holy war. there is NO WAY around that. me, as a rational human being, in her position, would NEVER come close to even mentioning something like that... much less repeating it. anyway you interpret it, it was bad!

you said it yourself, '... that there is a plan and that plan is God's plan'. i can make a very slightly varied interpretations of that, and NONE OF THEM ARE GOOD! those 2 things should never go together, a dangerous cocktail - and wow, i can only imagine people's eyes over there when they read that translation in arabic (or any language) - 'Holy shit, those stupid americans are religious fanatics'. IS SOUNDS VERY BADLY!

The way you're raging about nothing, your extreme intolerance of a simple heartfelt and kind wish for soldiers on their way to war makes me wonder about you. Tearing into people like Sarah Palin, who mean you no harm, makes you look mentally ill. The first amendment of the Bill of Rights establishes freedom of religion, not freedom from religion. its not even close, she implied that the mission itself is a task of God (and how in the HELL can she know this?) does she have a telephone line to god? its the 21st century, and these crusade like statements are in NO way beneficial to anyone. i'm already reading how foreign press has taken issue with this, so yes, i'm right about people being very offended, and, more so, scared! the bill of rights also says to not impose a specific religion/god on us. keep it OUT of the public/military sector

Okay, I think we have an honest disagreement here. I see no sign of a "holy war" in her message and you do. I really think that it's obvious what she meant, but whatever. Frankly, I'm not so happy with her level of religion, but I'm satisfied that she isn't a nut. She left her old church, a sort of Holy Roller thing because it was too extreme. I'm really happy to see a strong track record that she respects the Constitution. Far too many politicians don't.
