According to Wikipedia: The name "man o' war" is taken from the man-of-war, a 16th century English armed sailing ship that was based on an earlier Portuguese vessel.
Heaps of things that look like this on Australian beaches sometimes. me and my friend one day were playing with them and throwing them at each other without knowing we were gonna be in alot of pain. then the spot where we got hit started burning. -.-
I can tell you some facts about man of war yes many people say it's no jellyfish but i do this type of jellyfish can come back to life like a zombie matter of fact i saw a jellyfish man of war and found 3 dead in florida (it was a nice trip by the way) anywho wanna really knew what happens when you pop a jelly fish it implodes like a balloon so gross im wondering why r.l. stien didn't make a goosebumps book or episode of it regarless of being dead in my guide it says that can still sting you!
It had washed up on a beach and was dead. The movement is only from the wind. There's been a small dead one on the beach for three weeks now and the sail is still inflated.
i think i'll make a sea life aquarium some day, for jellyfish, plant life, squid and octopi, and perhaps, if extreemly lucky, the vampyroteuthis. ...what? i like these creatures, theyre beatiful and mysterious
@13Belladonna Wow, you were so close to getting stung! You are so lucky! I have never seen a blue jelly fish before. It almost looked like a semi inflated blue balloon.
... thennn how exactly did you write this? form what i understand they've got enough toxins in them to kill about 10 men. and even if it didn't give you a full dosage even a tiny amount would've put you into paralysis and you would have drown. maybe your thinking of the classic jellyfish not the man of war.
@zamm333 No, I mean, there were a lot on the beach but I only got stung by a small tiny one. The pain only lasted for a few hours. I didn't get stung by a million big ones.
@zamm333 No, I mean I only got stung by one but there were a lot of them on the beach. Although, they were very small. When I got stung it only lasted for a few hours. And yes, they were ManOwars
aye, portugese man of wars aren't actually ALIVE....as in they dont have a brain and dont have any sort of consciousness, which makes them different than jellyfish. what they are is a colony of smaller organisms coming together to create one big super organism. think of it as the power rangers putting together the megazord... O_o
i removed my coment cuz i didnt no a lot about jellies i red about man of wars box jellyfish and otherz i no now that u r right my other my statement wasunt true
anywasy id do the same thin he did thoe id be afraid rto touch ity o.o
Actualy Box jellyfishes aren`t considered True jellyfishes ether. The only type of Jellies that are considered "true" jellys are Scyphozoans. Although they Medusa stage "the jellyfish itself"
is also found in the Hydrozoa "hydromedusae" and the Cubozoa, "cubomedusae" Its a bit confusing at first since Hydromedusae and cubomedusae STILL technically jellyfishes. The True ones are structurally different.
"Hydromedusae and cubomedusae both have vellums and scyphozoa does not"
Its interesting because Although other cnidaria such as corals are colonial also, The Siphonophores such as the Man`o war has its Zooids specialized for specific purposes and each colony contains a zooids for reproduction, Feeding and locomotion.
@Royberg They haven't found where in the human brain OUR consciousness is yet either! If it were a collection of smaller organisms you'd be able to chop it up and they'd live independantly. We have a lot to learn about marine organisms particularly octopuses which have brain matter in each of their arms (we have brain matter in our hearts!)
i got stung by one of those in Florida one time when i was 11, and it hurt like SHIT!!! it hurt so bad that i almost passed out from the pain!! whatever you do, if you EVER see one of those, DON'T go near it, trust me X(
I can top all of yours, 1993 fuckin jellyfish went up my shorts and wrapped upmy ballbag like a xmas gift!!! I wont step foot in the water if I cant see everything around me, at the time I was praying 4 death.
Just wanted to let you know I laughed at this comment for like a minute straight. For one thing, who calls a nutsack a ballbag???????? The thought of this happening was extremely funny to me.
The blue bottle, man-of-war, or the Portuguese man of war, is commonly but erroneously thought of as a jellyfish; in fact, it is not a single animal, but rather a siphonophore; it is a colony of four kinds of highly modified individuals, specialized polyps and medusoids.
From Wikipedia: The Portuguese Man O' War (Physalia physalis), also known as the blue bubble, blue bottle, man-of-war, or the Portuguese man of war, is commonly thought of as a jellyfish but is actually a siphonophore—a colony of specialized polyps and medusoids.
