CLARINETS!!! WE PLAY REALLY HIGH NOTES! :) TAKES PRACTICE AND TALENT TO GET IT! MY SYMPHONIC BAND FOR HIGH SCHOOL IS PLAYING THIS, AND I LOVE THIS! <3
My reaction to the instruments: Trumpet: O_O -dead- Saxaphone:O_O -dead- Flute: O_O -dead- u get the point haha we played this this year and i got a solo in the second movement but i must say the trumpets owned this! (I played flute and tenor sax in this concert) stunning piece.
@JAGaudy We're playing this in our concert band in school. We asked a question today about the euphoniums and our band teacher explained that they are put with the saxophones because they sound just divine when put together, obviously you agree lol I'm a clarinet player (3rd) and just started a few months ago. I must say, this is a difficult piece to play when you've got limited amount of knowledge.
@DaYoungComposer I'm a flutist and i FUCKING LOVE THIS SONG! Played it in 7th grade and adored it. ^_^ I still play it for warm up to this very day. [ currently a 12th grader. XD ]]
One of my friends learned how to double tongue on the trumpet by playing this song with the Wellington Winds. I was there for alto sax there. This is my favourite out of the movements.
There's actually a euphonium solo in each movement. How do I know? I play the euphonium and we're doing this whole piece for MPA. However, you can hardly hear the euphonium, solo or not. :( All I hear is that dang first trumpet...
There may be a discrepancy between editions in this case. The original score had a separate baritone and euphonium part. In the 1948 edition, the baritone part was removed and dispersed between bass clarinet and tenor sax. I believe the Colin Matthews edition (most recent in 1984) expanded the euphonium part to include the doubling of the cornette part, among other additions.
I'm not an "expert" but I believe this may be why the euphonium solos aren't in this recording.
I found out the key puzzle piece after I posted that other comment (of course). This particular recording was done in 1978, in which case the Colin Matthews edition would not have existed. Hopefully this information is useful!
Love this song, well, all three movements, but this is my favorite part, even in thrid trumpet. (I take no shame in playing a lower part, I'm in th highest band and everyone in the band is a really strong player) I just love this piece, we're playing this, a piece by bach for the organ originally, and something called Africa by Robert Smith...which I don't like...
I be trombone this piece and I was instructed to help direct! Any tips on things that really need to be watched for high school, mainly second movement?
the first part for trumpet takes some crazy tounging and endurance. when i was in high school we played this at a concert when we had first read it the day before. and we actually did pretty well. its one of my very favorites
From 1:24 to 1:32 is my absolute favorite part. I picture little tin soldiers marching around a toy store or something like that, or a bunch of clocks or something.
I played this song with my former high school's concert band as the processional and recessional march for the Awards Assembly and Commencement at Streetsville Secondary School last October 2008, along with "March of the Belgian Paratroopers" by Pierre Leemans.
I played this on principal clarinet. I almost die of happiness at 2:40. I'm a bit of a march buff and I have to say this may be the best march ever written; it's happy, but cheeky, and builds to a very proud theme; a fitting end for such a brilliant suite.
The trumpets at 2:23 bring tears to my eyes every single time.
I wish I played something other then horn for this song... trumpet maybe? or clarinet. melody is very nice. horn just can never seem to catch a break with marches!
Oh god I know. Look up the song "Americans We" - Henry Fillmore sometime. The horn part is literally all offbeats. It's like, a 6 minute song. So much hate.
Im in 9th grade concert band were playing it in 4/4 time instead of 2/2 though. the first time i played this song (i play tuba) i was like wtf. but now im starting to get it
@alexman706 same here dude... i play tuba as well, but reading it in 2/2 pretty much the same concept as 4/4 :) the intro lead in got me, weird articulation
I might get a Trumpet Quartet and play along side this, this is just amazing, at 1:54 I had the biggest grin wipe across my face not because if the Principle trumpet (cornet) part but the 2ed trumpet (cornet) part. So bold and proud. But Principle part is the exact same thing for boldness and proudness. just simply the best written piece for symphonic band ever.
I love this piece! We're playing all three movements, but this is my favorite. I play the flute but I get so excited I almost wish I could play symbols for this, haha! =D
@Cursefire well, in an arrangement for orchestra, you could go faster, because you aren't blowing, so you can basically spazz your arm out :D, but you are very correct, it would be hard indeed. Either way, band or orchestra, this song is a masterpiece!
Performed this movement in high school! It's one of my favorites. We did read through "Chaconne" a few times but never really got the hang of it. And "Intermezzo" was a complete disaster. So we just did "March." It was the only one everyone seemed to like out of the three, LOL
