  • who's on drums?

  • we must have been really close to each other for this... What a great festival and Ani is always amazing

  • I love Ani's music, how she keeps redefining it, and I love her politics. When I heard her new song "Alla This" firecrackers started going off. It was so invigorating. Those drums and that bass created the waves that I rode Ani's guitar on. Tonight I tried to find this song on YouTube to share with some friends but became disappointed when every version I found was left hollow missing that incredible drum and bass.

  • I actually heard this song for the first time on Fashion TV in Paris. isn't that a total hoot? All these models getting made up and prancing on the catwalk with Ani singing, "i wont let you make a tool of me

i will keep my mind and body free".

Very interesting contrast... and surprising really. Excellent song - of course (bien sur!)

  • Funny story. Maybe the fashion show producer was trying to be ironic....

  • "I will not worship a male god, because that would be insane..." for that line alone red letter year was worth the purchase. thank you for years of great music ani~

  • thanks for cleaning up the audio!

  • wonderful song!

  • i love ani and everything she does, i think she rocks and i also think she is the best artist i have ever listened 2.

  • WOW! This version is so much better than the one she put on the album...I have to agree with some of what's been said about her later records. While I feel lyrically the material has gotten better, the melodies and the musical composition just isn't there (for me, anyway). This could be a really power tune or protest song but on the album it sounds kind of wimpy and her vocal delivery just does not match the lyrics in my opinion.

Still...I recognize she is still better than 99% out there...

  • how old is this show? i saw a show from a couple of a days ago and her hair is all the way down her back...

  • imo, ani hasn't put out a consistently good album since LPC. up6 and TTT had really beautiful moments, but not consistent for greatness as a whole. since then... a downward spiral. each album has one or two songs that are quite strong, while the rest just, well, are not good (never mind "great"). she's been using the same songwriting formula for nearly 20 years and it's just growing old. btw, the fact that majors put out shit has no bearing on whether this song is any good.

  • my last post apparently warrants clarification. there is a difference between songwriting and producing/arranging a song. so those of you crying out that "ani played with trumpets and saxes and vibes and violins - you're wrong!" can rest assured that that was not at all to what i was referring.

  • I actually prefer Ani's work in the later period, I find some of her her early records to be hard to listen when compared to Reckoning, or To the Teeth, or Knuckle Down, she's just getting better and better. I did feel like the last album wasn't as good as the one before but she also has a family now and that is more important than our entertainment anyway. I thought she would retire, I'm glad to be hearing what she has to say, tho she shouldn't feel pressure to release a CD per year anymore

  • what happened to ani? it used to be that she put out records that had 80-90% really good material. now it's just the opposite.

yeah she's really into it, but this song is far from great.

  • She's not a sepratist at all! She's very inspiring to people of all genders. Her refusal to pray to a male god is more an aversion to patriarchy than anything else. We need to recognize that we live in a patriarchal world, and that the one male god model only helps to reinforce this system.

  • I love Ani but she is such a sepratist and it's a turn off.

Im an equalist and there is a big diffrence. I won't rest until we all regroup and I won't pray to a god of any gender because a God of gender doesn't exist.

  • Damn! That rocks.

  • That was spectacular, she's so into it. I love how she sways and pulsates with the guitar like that, and her smile, wow.

  • i saw her do this song live in Guelph last July. i think it was the first time she played it in Canada, and at the "can't support the troops" line the whole place went crazy. Apparently it was the first time she received that kind of reponse.

  • I'm curious -- Did the Canadians go "crazy" in agreement with the line, or in opposition?

  • Oh, we loved it. We frigging loved it.

"Support the troops. Bring them home."

  • LOVE IT!

  • I laugh every time I hear the intro of this song in the cd version XDD She's the best!!

  • I thought her long intro to this song on the Hamburg bootleg, with its analogy of troops to secretaries, was spot on. At the Langerado festival (with all its pseudo-hippies and phishhead types), the line "I can't support the troops" still garnered an immediate, visceral, negative response from some of the audience.

  • Never seen her in concert, I think it would be truly an inspiring experience, she's got wit and humour, and sense I'm far from being hippy haha but I feel very close to her words

  • I love this song!! Go ANI!

  • hell yes!

  • Wonderful ANI!
