People complain about the Crusaders being aggressive against the poor Muslims. The Crusaders were the long OVERDO military action against the Muslims for centuries of overrunning Europe. Perhaps it would be better to say, the Culture *maintains* its violent tendencies because of Religion. As we both know I'm sure, the Middle-East before Muhammed was already a fairly violent and barbarist locale, most of the violence (virtually all of it, actually) developing for two reasons a) Turf wars (As the Quran will prove) and b) Holy warfare (As again, the Quran will concede)
The Culture itself was already quite barbarist, primitivistic and undeveloped, of course.
