I read somewhere that this first aired during the Super Bowl in January of 1982. Does anyone know if that's true? It was obviously inspired by the movie Fame, from 1980. For some reason I've always guessed that the actors were lip-syncing and the singing was actually done by others and dubbed in. Don't know if that's actually true though. Still a fantastic commercial.
God Bless America and You Tube. Back in 82 most of us did not have Betamax to record and re-listen. If you missed a commercial too bad. Now where I live commercials are all ambulance chasers. Coke's still it.
This video makes me want to put on some leg warmers and get Physical. Can anyone tell me who sings the bridge in the song and what she has been in? Even though they are kicking Pepsi's tucas three times (beverage sales) they should do this for Zero and Fresca and do a retro-refresh.
I'm actually surprised that companies haven't jumped on the "retromercial" thing and re-released these on television. Cheap way to advertise without the production costs and time spent on new ads. People eat this shit up...
A dude walks in a Mom & Pop diner. The waitress asks him what he wants to drink. He says....... "Do you have Pepsi?" And the waitress says "Coke is it."
The 80's were such a wild and fun time! This commercial really reflected on that at the time. I remember this commercial vividly. I love it to this day!!!
One thing regarding the eighties that I have very pleasent memories of is the sitcom "Gimme a Break!"! I grew up having the biggest crush on Julie! Especially when she would wear designer boots! Wow!
Best Coke commercial ever produced. The song makes it. They really need to bring it back and make it modern. Seriously, this tune is so fucking catchy that my cat was dancing to it.
The jingle reminds me so much of Twins games at the HHH Metrodome in the early/mid '80's, when there reaslly wasn't as much advertising permitted by teams. During a game, a fan might have heard that jingle at least 5 times. It might have bothered me more if there were other jingles being played, but after hearing jingles for Hardware Hank and WCCO radio, I began looking forward to the Coke jingle.
I am happy to report that the Coke jingle did not make the move to Target Field.
I like the '70s-looking pianist, but other than that, I just remembered why I hated living through the '80s so much!
I much prefer the 'Catch That Pepsi Spirit' advert from 1980, with the young girl attempting to toss and catch the baton with the school band on the day of the big parade. That advert was so positive and uplifting, signalling the start of a good decade--too bad it failed as a soothsayer. It's probably the last great soft-drink advert. Sigh... (I'm almost 41!)
@jannyrcobs dude….what the hell is wrong with YOU??? if you hated the 80's you obviously were a loser in highschool or you just hated everyone…..probably that. yea. the weird kid who sits in the corner and swares under his breath at everything. jeez dude get away from ME!
The young woman at :40 - "It's the smile you can't hide..." Anyone recognize her? What a beautiful face, what a rich voice. Only one I recognize in this spot is Diane Franklin. Who is this lady? Did she go on to great things? (Of course, her voice may be ADR'ed, who knows?)
America ruled in the '80s. I had a 1988 GMC Van, and it only broke-down once after accumulating over 100,000 miles, and it was big, comfortable, mostly steel, and the whole thing only cost about 80000 yen. I wish that I would have kept it, since it was truly one of my favourite vehicles. It was one of the last good American cars ever made. In fact, the only reason I sold it was because of its 8 MPG and burning oil (repairable, which I should have done).
i totally remember this commercial, but i sweat to you i thought it was with the Up With People cast!!! they should reair this commercial for sure!!! like totally!!! i love it! thanks for posting this!!!
This is my favorite Coke commercial, too. Thanks so much for uploading it!
I seem to recall there was even longer version than this. It was rarely shown. It basically had the entire chorus lyrics at the end instead of shortening it like in this one (when it cuts to the piano player). If anyone has it, please upload it!
IMHO, this is the best coke commercial ever. I was about 12yo when it was launched and I used to stay in front of the TV during the commercial breaks just waiting to watch it (there was no VCR at that time here in Brazil). The Brazilian version of this commercial is pretty much similar in terms of the song and the mise-en-cene. Thanks for uploading it.
when they sing "Coke is it" for some reason I always think of coke instead of cola :-)

"Coke is it" is one of the first phrases I ever spoke when I was learning to talk.
I think my father must've consumed that stuff by the gallon in those days. Memories! :)

I prefer this longer version of the ad - it has much more drama.
The ad was like this because of all the "Fame" (both movie & TV series) mania back in the early 80's...
