Dan Rather has been involved in every major news event for nearly 50 years. He reported from the Kennedy assassination, the front lines in every war, and strapped to telephone polls in hurricanes.
In this video he is about to go on a live national feed to millions of people. I think spending 10 minutes (yes, 10 minutes if you take out wind, lighting, etc conversations) on whether to put the collar up or down isn't really that big of a deal. Far less than Katie's Uggs and that damn button.

The coat may seem trivial, but it affects lighting (who are there setting his key-light and backlight). So regardless of what you think of his politics - this is a pro anchor making sure the broadcast looks right.

Luckily they were able to prove the military papers on GW Bush were fake. Dan Rather has been involved in every major news event for nearly 50 years. He reported from the Kennedy assassination, the front lines in every war, and strapped to telephone polls in hurricanes.
In this video he is about to go on a live national feed to millions of people. I think spending 10 minutes (yes, 10 minutes if you take out wind, lighting, etc conversations) on whether to put the collar up or down isn't really that big of a deal. Far less than Katie's Uggs and that damn button.

People have to understand something. This is the nature of this business. I believe people forget that news is entertainment, filled with 30 second sound bites and a bunch of vain people.
There is nothing wrong with that if you can understand that television is like being in advertising, here today, gone tomorrow.
I remember Rather when he was putting his ass on the line in the 60's in Vietnam. He is one of the few that helped bring the war into reality. He deserves a little respect.

Good point. I'm sure if a lot of the people here were going to be on TV in front of millions they'd take into account what they were going to look like. This is only a small aspect of the many things Rather would have going through his head at that time and his attention to detail is a testament to his professionalism, not "vanity".

If this is the WORST off-camera behavior the 'anti-Dan Rather' mob can produce, what it says is that he seems like quite a nice guy off-camera. It's cold, windy & he's outdoors, but he's smiley, he doesn't raise his voice, he's not swearing or going nuts, and he's polite to his team. The coat may seem trivial, but it affects lighting (who are there setting his key-light and backlight). So regardless of what you think of his politics - this is a pro anchor making sure the broadcast looks right.

Luckily they were able to prove the military papers on GW Bush were fake. This @ss almost caused Kerry to get elected, Kerry would have withdrawn the troops causing us to lose the war and al-qaeda and Iran would've been trumpeting their victory over the US. US essentially won the war in two weeks "Shock and Awe" the rest was what happens when you keep a society in tyranny for generations then give them freedom to do what they want.
