this type of thing helps........ ships that are no more in service gets the oil and every thing else that is harmful to the environment removed.........gets pulled out to somewhere.....sunk to provide a new home to many marine life and making a new coil reef
@LetsFri Get a life loser, and learn a thing or two, stop being so dramatic - frigate is all steel, it will rust away, its simply giving back to nature what we dug out, no pollution, nothing bad. Plus this will become a reef for many various fish species, so its a win-win for the environment.
1 minute ago A sad site.I had the honour & privelidge of serving on HMNZS Southland & HMNZS Wellington alongside HMNZS Waikato.I remember sea survival training on HMNZS Otago & The Lachlan was a refit barge.I remember while serving on Wellington Towing Waikato back into Darwin in back 88 after a damaged prop shaft.May she rest in peace.Fond Memories. But yes at least shes laid to rest in New Zealand waters
She was formerly HMS Bacchante of the Royal Navy and I was lucky enough to stay onboard her some 38 years ago when I was a boy in the sea cadets, I was attached to Bacchante SCC when I was just 14 years old, At least she hasnt been turned into razor blades! An artificial reef is a great end to a great ship.

@BluesDices 101227 is right they dont use that much explosive to sink these ships the hull is cut in a way that pre weakens the ship alot they use minimal amount of explosives maybe 100 pounds on a big ship and 100lbs is evn more than useuall
Our new ships are recyclable but the old ones like this guy had to be sunk. Also the ships are sunk in shallow water for strategical purposes. Such as an enemy ship enters the area and hits the sunk ship damaging the enemy's

It was sunk so as to be a Scuba Diving tourist type attraction. New Zealand had just bought some new Warships for its navy and thus the HMNZS Wellington F69 frigate was sunk as a 'scuba attraction' after a number of other options-selling it,scraping it had been explored. M <
There's a few reasons to sink old ships. Sometimes it's a way of disposting it. It can provide an artificial reef for sea life and othertimes the old ship is used as a target to test Navy equipment. Most envionmental concerns are addressed before hand. With scrap metal at a high value now days there might not be as many ships being sunk as targets. PS a beautiful kid in this video too.
Yeah,it cost a lot,and takes a lot to cut a ship up ( many years repairing them including this one ).But the old Leanders were full of Asbestos in the boilers,so removal would have been impossible as it was structuraly part of the boiler.Oh,and we are talking in the tons in weight amount.

theres something wrong here.
note to self:
never make a vid with scenes of babies and sinking ships accompanied by french sounding wind instruments. execution videos are less disturbing.

Put 30 thousand tons of steel onto the bottom of the sea, and then fine you for not using the recycle bin for your beer cans.

Sigh..............
Thousands? Really? The charges used to sink theses ships are very small. The hull is pre-weakened so less explosives are required.
Oh, and fuck the fish. Care about something that matters.

Was it a controlled "scuttling" to make an artificial reef? I don't recognize the configuration of the ship. What was it? Thanks.
