"this guy" can beat match...he's been around for a long time, sort of pioneered a wave of house music...Traktor wasn't around when James Holden started tearing shit up, if he wanted to do a Vinyl set he would do a Vinyl set. There's a lot more to mixing songs then beat matching dude, listen to any of his mix CD's and tell me he's not skillful.

@yagorules Beat matching has nothing to do with being a good DJ? If you are using turntables and not software that will match perfectly for you (new Traktor etc), beat matching is key to a smooth set i.e. good progressive transition from track to track. Holden is a great producer but sometimes when the mixing is so out of time it is difficult to appreciate the music. I saw him in London and lots of people left because he couldn't put 2 tracks together. I'm not sure if this was a one off though?

@yagorules exactly, you prove my point. To enjoy a the music there needs to be a smooth transition between tracks to ensure the beat and basslines are not competing on different tempos. Otherwise the crowd is distacted by the mixing and can't enjoy the track. So to use your analogy, James Holden can't even run! I know he's a great producer (a break in the clouds etc.), but when I saw him live the mixing was terrible and it ruined his great music. Maybe it was a one off? I don't know, I hope so

in many cases, having an awkward, irregular mix between two songs can actually be a good thing

it heightens the tension that these types of songs have to begin with

i'm having trouble describing and explaining this, but i hear it, and it just sounds right - the mood is perfect

this kind of music was never about being danced to in a drunk state anyway

it's always been about the music, and nothing else
