  • when i said i wanted to be a comedian

  • "As I sit down, unemployment goes down by one!" A genius.

  • Fine as Mr Hell.

  • Bob Monkhouse, whatever else he was. was a terrible, terrible interviewer. "Awkward" doesn't cover his self-indulgent, total ineptitude. Really, he was that bad (I remember!).

  • @ludocrat He wasn't a great interviewer but a very funny comedian, who also wrote for some even greater comics like Bob Hope.

  • "What has a comedian to show for all the years of hard work and aggravation except the echo of forgotten laughter" (Fred Allen)

  • One way to gauge good comedians with Great Comedians is when good comedians lose it and become speechless in front of Great Comedians.

Monkhouse is a classic comedian, but next to Spike he steps down a level.

  • Spike Milligan commenting on Prince Charles: "he's a groveling little shit"

  • THE original and the best. My dad has the same humour: must be the Irish connection.

We saw him at Dorking Halls in the 70s and Spike and my dad sat on the edge of the stage before the show trading quips. Halcyon days. ;@)

  • when was this roadcased?

  • "A cunningly worded invitation to get KILLED" !! How funny is THAT ?? Lol

  • R.I.P. BOB MONKHOUSE. Some of the stuff written here is plain stupid mr monkhouse was extremely funny and a brilliant writer of jokes, im sorry but he made a hell of a lot more sence to me than spike who as we all know is a comedy genius on form in this interview,

  • I never knew terry wogan was so racist against kikes.

  • Bob Monkhouse was never that funny. His stuff was so obviously scripted ( as he has said many times over) He was very sterile and quite dull in his delivery!. As a comedy hero, he was never in the top draw. I always thought of him as a greasy scripted comedian, nothing natural, nothing spontaneous, nothing talented. Infact he wasnt that funny at all!

  • That's a bit unfair: Monkhouse earned his stripes as a writer, and spent most of his career within the constrained format of quiz/game shows. One thing I remember liking about this particular format was how well he could get other comics to talk the nuts and bolts of comedy. So yeah, an analytic comedian, with an encyclopaedic knowledge of how jokes were put together on both sides of the pond; not a genius like Spike, for sure, but a pro respected by pros.

  • what a load of crap

  • Two comic geniuses.

"They all laughed when I said I wanted to be a comedian... well, they're not laughing now" - Monkhouse

  • Sad these two are no longer with us. Monkhouse was a terrible interviewer too wooden and not loose enough.

  • Plastic world, rail against it in your daily life...!!!!!!!

Thank God for VHS and dvd...

Quick wit by monkhouse, there...terrible interviewer though, they're just there to make their guest feel at ease...

    Like Spike's ad libs...

  • Spike was pure genius. Troubled, sure, but genius.

In his defense, Bob was allegedly electric live. TV limits some comics. I saw Alexei Sayle twice live and I have never laughed so much in my life. It hurt, it hurt so much I could barely get my half time drinks down. I watch Alexei's TV stuff and lament he had to tone down what was a great, great talent.

Listen to some Goon shows to hear how an anarchic tradition was founded.

    R.I.P. Spike, bless ye!

  • Thank God he put Spike on this earth for us to listen to and see, {I will add the rest of the Goons and Q series crews} Genius

I read 3 pages a day in behind the lines Obsevation Posts in "strange places" with a sweat rag stuffed in my mouth to stop making a noise lauging, on my time off so the bloody enemy would not hear!!

  • Milligan was hilarious, but Monkhouse was appalling, no spontaneity at all. I remember he had Bob Hope on this show and Monkhouse was crying tears as a mark of respect for a comedy legend, though Hope wasn't even funny that night.

  • We must remember poor Bob was only doing the interviewing, and lets face it, (Nobody) stood a chance against comedy legend Spike, god bless em' both I say!

  • @bondbrookebond Good point. Also, Bob Monkhouse was one of the sharpest comedians the UK ever produced.

  • @lumbago12 How do you figure that? The guy was RENOUND for stealing gags off other people. He was more wooden than Jimmy Carr.

  • Spike was well well before his time. Not many comedians today make me laugh as much as spike did/does.

In fairness to Bob as has been said, he was the interviewer, in his own wiright he was a comic genius as well. Too people right there who shall be missed, I thank both of them for the smiles the brought me.

  • thats unfair,, Bob was very very talented,, it wasnt a competition,, Spike was sublime,, but dont have a pop at BOb you knob,, he did stand up where Spike wouldnt have dared,, they are both incredible,, ok,,

  • "as i sit down, unnemployment goes down by one" lol that was classic!

  • A face like a dogs bum with a hat on! lol

  • Spike was a wonder.

  • thet are both legends

  • We will NEVER NEVER EVER again see the likes of MILLIGAN, PETER COOK,VIVIAN STANSHALL or even KENNY EVERETT because of the kind of world younger people grow up in today. These people could not have thrived in the useless plastic Big Brother world in which we now live

  • sssoooooo true well said!

  • I agree, but, while there is madness in the world, (lets face it, noone gets out alive) there will always be Milligans and the like to point out all the absurdeties, so, onwards and sideways, you might enjoy this word pallendrome, YOU CAN CAGE A SWALLOW CANT YOU BUT YOU CANT SWALLOW A CAGE CAN YOU;;, read it backwards for Christmas, dip, dip, us Terences must stick together, I say, Dyslexics of the world UNTIE, take care

  • Couldnt agree more Kenfig..

    Bloody legends! TOMMY COOPER too?

  • Ha ha good old Tommy ; of course Peter !

  • @kenfig Yup. Rest in peace, Viv.

  • @dharmaseed Oh yeah, as you know Viv was unique, not an act at all ; the real deal ; no difference between what was considered his 'performance' and what he was in his private life and he got upset if folk thought it was an 'act' ; it was his madness. But a beautiful, intelligent, sensitve guy thats all and one of the funniest people EVER

  • @kenfig Absolutely. They had four guys filling in for him at the Bonzo reunion shows, and it still wasn't enough.

  • @dharmaseed Lol ; no,cant be done !

  • @kenfig - I absolutely agree except to add the divine Peter Sellers to your list. We should roll back the good times rather than proceding with this crappy nonsense

  • i agree with you man !!

  • A cunningly written invitation to get killed lol brilliant.

  • hermanlovespauline, maybe you are getting senile.

  • spike wasthe unniestman who ever lived

  • too right

  • Bob was such a generous host - brilliant.

  • Fantastic!

God bless Spike as the funniest fu++er I have ever seen.

The War Diaries are stunning and moving.

  • Milligan is a genius - the war diaries are superb!

  • Absolute Quality.

  • "A cunningly worded invitation to be killed" beautiful.

  • If it wasn't for Spike, Peter and Harry as the Goons, I would not be here now typing this...Jim! colonelrobertneville blogspot com

  • How did you join the army? They wrote to me. Hhehhee. Lovely.

  • Just 703 views in six weeks?

Two comic super legends and what a treat, Bob was brilliant comic but a lousy interviewer, still - the irrepressible Spike was out on his own here at his brilliant best.

  • Both gone now. 8=((

  • great stuff-yay :)
