Personally I think G Rap had the best verse. Back in the day I thought the same thing. Then when Kool G dropped Road to the Riches that was it for me. G RAP was way ahead of his time.
Michrich98 summed it up perfectly and to the kid who said G Rap hands down really doesn't know what he's talking about. It's really a toss up between Kane and G. Hands down better? No one is! I go back and forth on who had the better verse and I STILL can't come up with a winner. Regardless....Kane shut that joint down at the end!
The order they went in is perfect. Ace grabbed your attention, and made you want to listen, Craig G followed suit, Kool G built up the intensity, and Kane shut it down!!!
The best people in the juice crew to me was Kool G. Rap and Biz. Craig G and Master Ace was scientists. Kane was great but he pissed me off with that singing shit and then he lost his fire to me.
Ace's intro was hot but Kanes verse killed the entire track. "Put a quarter in your ass cause you played yourself" I was 10 when this tracked dropped and as a 10 year old I knew then Kane rocked this track..l
what is everyone's problem with Jay-z I'm not saying he has to be in your top 10 favorites but seriously, he's not in the same category as souljah boy. some people just hate whatever is successful and probably have no idea why they're hating... obviously on a band wagon @universallordgator have you ever heard anything from J that wasn't on tv or radio?
It's been almost 25 years since those cats were in their primes and we are still debating about who's the best. I am running off at the typewriter (laptop). Next week, I am going over to the Rakim videos and type about why I think Rakim is the best. This week Kane is the best!
@universallordgator hahaha.... Fam, the era we grew up in had so many people we could call The Best, it made no sense. Kane, G Rap, Rakim, KRS, Ricky D, Kool Moe D, LL, Chuck D, Hell... Ice Cube. The list can go on and on. We need to appreciate what we experienced. It will never happen again.
@universallordgator It goes to show that we grew up in an era of Hip Hop Greatness & not this bubblegum pop bullsh*t that passes for Hip Hop today. Damn I'm glad I didn't miss Hip Hop during it's Golden Period. People like these cats, Rakim, Krs-One, Intelligent Hoodlum, Naughty By Nature's Treach, Chuck D, LL Cool J (Pre-1993), etc.. will forever live as true rappers. Not the Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Soulja Boy's of todays garbage.
A fissure developed and people chose sides. I will tell anyone that listens to hip hop to compare Rakim's first two albums... polar opposites. The one song on Follow the Leader that put me in a Rakim frame of mind was the 'The R'. A number of the other tracks made me say that Rakim sounds angry. Lyrics of Fury is in the same mold of Raw. The lyrics in that song were dark; and would become darker on subsequent albums.
After Kane's arrival, all true hip hop heads caught chills. Rakim loyalists knew deep down that Kane was on par with Rakim. However, it was blasphemous to even put someone on the same level as Rakim. Look at the difference between the tone of Rakim's first album and Rakim's second album. Rakim moved towards the same desrtuctive tone that Kane's first album exhibited. His cadence and flow also quickened. Nothing sounded like Rakim when he first dropped. Likewise, nothing sounded like Kane.
When I was a young cat, circa '86; I would listen to Eric B. and Rakim's first tape after school for hours at a time. I learned all of the lyrics by writing them down. I said to anyone that would listen that, "The greatest emcee of all time is Rakim!" Two years later, Kane dropped his album and I never made that statement again. I love Rakim, you could never get me to say anything bad about his work. Before BDK came on the scene, no one would dispute that Rakim was the best.

The lineup was supposed to be Shan, Craig G., G Rap, and Kane. Shan backed out cuz he didn't want to be on a posse cut with a bunch of new jacks. G Rap hadn't released an album yet and Kane's had just come out that summer. Shan felt he would have been playing himself. So Marl was going to keep it at three. But when they were about to record it, no one wanted to go first. So Masta Ace said his rhyme just to break the ice. And the rest is history.

"..you betta evaporate, disintegrate deflate to ya fate as the great will dominate straight to the state..." ..that's gotta be one of my favorite flows from Kane right there, and he's got a few.

it's between G. Rap and Kane but, they both ripped it. I can't choose. there are days i think G Rap murdered it and then there are days where i think Kane bodied it.
Agreed. The thing i like most about the track is Kool G and Big Daddy presenting perfect examples of their styles and rhythm. So many rhymes!!! Makes me wanna get up and flex.
Kool G Rap takes it for me, his verse makes more sense i reckon
damn thats terrible how can u call it lameit was something u loved homie,i agree with the advancement of technology and all that jazz.but lame! nah not lame.maybe classic
yeah it is a classic it took me back to my childhood.
what i was trying to say was according to the society's standards back then the video was awesome. but now according to today's standards it is lame. but for then during that time perios it gets 5 stars.
"Battlin' me is hazardous to health, so put a quarter in ya ass, cuz you played yourself". LOL @ the part when Kane says it in the video, "so put a quarter in yo [shout]..."

This is the shit...
Marley Marl put together the all star team.
Glad MC Shan wasn't on this track.
He just never fit in with the rest of the MCs.
My friends used to argue who had the best verse in the song.

it's between G.
