  • Love this, always have! Caravan is a great tune, too! It is a bit similar!

  • I'm speaking of MUSIC you depressed soul ! Lets put you in charge of morale.

  • A lovely time to be alive - what great music...

  • @ManagerGuy1 Not if you were Black, Jewish, Chinese, a women, or a minority or any kind.

  • Great song. Dion and the Belmonts do a very respectable cover of this.

  • One of the greats. First heard him in the 70's but didn't know the name. Catching up now!

  • Exquisite! Here is the magic of the internet--let's keep discovering the treasures of the past to help create a more humane and beautiful future!

  • What an inspired and wonderful arrangement and vocal performance! WOWWW!!!! . . . . . . . . Just takes me away . . . . . .

  • Only hearing this man's wonderful voice and style for the first time tonight. Instantly drawn in. I could listen forever.

  • @mymusicdaze You have so many wonderful things to discover- I "found" Al over 30 years ago, and am still discovering him bit by bit. He does draw you in, doesnt he? especially in something as hypnotic and ethereal as this. Anything by Ray Noble (before 1937) and anything by Lew Stone & his Monseigneur Band if you want to hear Al at his best. If you'd like any pointers, just ask- Bon voyage!

  • Many people don't know that there's also a part of CLOSE YOUR EYES in PUBLIC ENEMIES with Marion Cotillard & Johnny Depp. BUT I KNOW :D

  • For some strange reason, this song reminds me of "Gloomy Sunday" by Rezso Seress. I know they don't actually sound alike, but there's something about it that feels dark.

  • @TheTrebledSoul I understand what you mean!

  • @TheTrebledSoul and to me "Thrust in me" from Susheela Raman

  • Al Bowlly as South African Barber who became a Vocal senation during the 30's Close your eyes by Bernice Petkare 1933, he was killed in London in the 1940 by an Aerial mine on his flat and he is buried in a communal grave with about 80 other who died in the same black when bombed. This melody is played on a violin while Terry Thomas es character is being bled to death inthe first Dr Phibes film

  • @tgb6591 If I'm not mistaken he was of Greek-Lebanese parentage. Has a huge discography!

  • magnific.

  • What's sad is that I know more boys than girls who listen to Al Bowlly. Girls listen to Lady Gaga and Rihanna.

  • THIS IS MUSIC!!

  • to LKayL1 Cravan is an instrumental recorded by top session man Rhett Stoller and his group. I`ve never heard a vocal version of this track. But it has been wideley recorded by other instro groups. The composing credits for the track are Ellington, Tizol ,and Mills if that is of any help. The Ellington mentioned could be Duke Ellington. superamos31

  • Doesn`t this tune sound very much like `Caravan` It sure does to me or am i imagining it ? superamos31

  • @SuperAmos31 Who sings this song, 'Caravan'?

  • First heard this over 20 years ago, and the impact is just as great today. the first part is so haunting, makes me think of phantom dancers, half glimpsed in an abandoned ballroom. Its an extraordinary arrangement. Wish someone would upload a good copy of Ray's "Mad About the Boy" (Same year) -its a similar type of arrangement though without any vocal. Ive only got it on vinyl- anyone??

  • Очень лирическая мелодия !

  • OMG, would you not love to be back in the 20's with all this going on

  • OMG, would you not love to be back in the 20's with this stuff going on

  • I have an old much played tape and this number always makes me want to smile yet weep at the same time. I do close my eyes and see couples dancing with the beautiful dresses a la Ginger Rogers and elegant suits. Agreeing with flatssel, this has to be one of the best orchestral arrangements ever recorded.Another one is "hold my hand". Try to find it.

  • God I have listened to this everyday for the past three weeks it is just the best! and written by a woman <3 <3 <3

  • great song, great singer,he sang so many great tunes!

  • I love his voice. I love this song. No more to say.

  • Al Bowlly is the Man. Most of my mates laugh at me being to this music, but i like the period. He had a great voice didn't he. Close your eyes is a firm favourite of mine. it's a pity he could not have teamed up with Jessie Matthews. They like Fred and Ginger would have made a great team. both males the singers and both girls excellent dancers. Thanks for sharing this with us

  • Anybody who loves 1930's music has to love AL Bowlly!! Every time I hear him especially with the great Ray Noble my heart races to think that this beautiful voice was APPRECIATED by the MASSES who today are enamored with PURE Garbage in the form of vile and indecent entertainment . I thank God I lived long enough to hear this Magnificent performer in his prime as I was deprived of it while the USA was submerged in ELVIS,The BEATLES and many other lesser talents in the 50's and forward!!

  • I could close my eyes and see Ginger and Fred dancing to this record.

  • @Georgewos What a splendid visualization, indeed!

  • That's got one of the most astounding orchestral arrangements anywhere, any genre,

  • a song my Mother used to my baby brother to get him asleep back in 1934

  • @tomtomtom692 ...lucky 'baby brother'..... indeed...!

  • too fantastic, sublime, incredible, enigmatic for words........

  • Al Bowlly, simply SUPERB and a flawless performer, love him, THANK LKAYL1

  • @LoserBabyLuna yeah it is.

  • One of my favourite songs for sure, ever written..Originally, I thought it was written in the 1950's, due to it's modern beat and style. However, It was written in 1932! A sensational years for great music too!

  • So Beautiful.

  • A marvellous and haunting track, one of the best of its period.
