While not of a standard Swing Era orchestra, what with the strings, it nonetheless evokes the Swing Era and then some extra sophistication. Wonder who the arranger was for this. Sounds like Jimmy Dorsey was out there on clarinet.
This was on a late 15000 series Vocalion and not on ARC (these titles on ARC are different sessions) which is why few have heard it...definitely Berigan on trumpet
Thanks for this info. Where did you find that personne? I checked in Rust who suggests Lang and possibly Klein or Berigan on tpt. I think it sounds more like Klein and I've never heard McD do single-note playing like the guitar solo on this record. But it's all guess work at this point and most importantly it's a great record no matter who is on it!
Thanks, Mickey. I was looking in the "old" Rust. But my ears still tell me it's Lang on guitar...most of Rust's personnel listings are guesses...that's what Allan Sutton and other discographers have told me. Best wishes to you and thanks for the info. Taylor B.
After listening to this record frequently for several months...I still can't believe how SUPERB it is!!! And the song is a masterpiece all by itself. thanks again for posting this one!
I have a big collection of early 30s pop and jazz disks but had never heard this superb record until now...THANKS for posting! The studio orch with Chick B. is pretty clearly directed by composer Victor Young himself, who made a lot of studio recordings during this era for ARC. It has all the hallmarks of his arranging style, with great use of the violin section and space for brilliant jazz solos. I'm sure of Lang on guitar, but the clarinet and trumpet don't QUITE
Of course you're correct about Lang passing away in 1933 for some reason I had it in my head that it was 1932. Lang is listed on a January session with Bullock and this could be him also, but Rust says it's McDonough, I'm not to swift at hearing the difference between the two in this type of song and the solo is short. You are also correct that this is definitely a Victor Young arrangement not too sure if he actually directed it. In any case it is a superb recording. Fred
There is a stylistic similarity between Otto Heimel and this guitarist - check out After You've gone by Gene Austin from 1934. The video is on Youtube
Jeez, that's a swell record. It's just great to think about Lee Wiley and Victor Young writing a song together, and I really like this singer, band, and arrangement.
Chick Bullock was one of the first early artists who attracted me into collecting 78's in the early 1960's. So I have a special fondness for him. He usually benefits from great accompaniments. There are a couple of CD's devoted to him.
As soon as I saw the picture with the ashtray, the hat, and the gun,(did you set that up or is that a real picture?).. I knew I had to make a reference to Dashiell Hammett and then Bogie appeared with the Falcon and then, Oh my God!, my favorite actor in the whole world, James Dean, walking down Broadway in the rain. I have that poster, "Boulevard of Broken Dreams." You have outdone yourself again. This presentation was SUPER! Great song too.
Chick was actually from Butte, Montana. "Mutte, Mass." was probably some British miswriting - he never was quite forgotten over there.
You wonder why he didn't adopt an eye patch. It could have been a great trademark.

@JCJasion It's very modern for the year, when only the crooning style of instrumentals was present and some klazzy jazz.

The info I presented is from page 220 of Rust's Jazz Records. However, Lang did play on the previous session a month before according to Rust.

...don't quite sound like any of the usual musicians on records like this. Anyone have ideas?

I'm pretty sure Lang was gone by this time.

He's great one of the "hunks" of his day Boggie, Grant and all the rest in one package....

It's strange because I also uploaded Chick Bullock around the same time singing "Don't Tell Her".Very Good,Doc.

Those first 4 or 5 lines of the lyrics exactly express my feelings about someone I know who lives in Poland and uploads these great videos.
Just imagine that totally black eye! And who's that guy walking over a bridge in the rain?
