Part of the original can be seen in a BBC documentary, "Children of God" which was made about the South African Police Riot Unit in Cape Town shortly after the unbanning of the ANC in 1990. Police were battling to apprehend rioters as they were using hit and run tactics guerilla style so they adopted this Q Car tactic. I think a mix ofbirdshot and buckshot was used in their shotguns.
This incident was filmed by a Canadian TV crew in Athlone.This is only a small portion of the original video. Prior to the shooting one can see crowds of rioting youths stoning vehicles with half bricks and large rocks. You actually see some of the youths running along side vehicles and throwing large rocks towards drivers heads. I will try to load the original to put this incident in perspective. Police were having a hard time apprehending groups of rioters as they would disperse and regroup.

In the video the truck was just driving down the street and there was nothing to indicate it was an undercover truck. The protesters rocks struck the vehicle and THEN the armed men came out of hiding and started firing. If the men hadn't been there the driver would have been injured or killed by the protestors, and the protestors struck first, therefore it is self defence.

This incident was filmed by a Canadian TV crew in Athlone.This is only a small portion of the original video. Prior to the shooting one can see crowds of rioting youths stoning vehicles with half bricks and large rocks. You actually see some of the youths running along side vehicles and throwing large rocks towards drivers heads. I will try to load the original to put this incident in perspective. Police were having a hard time apprehending groups of rioters as they would disperse and regroup.

In the video the truck was just driving down the street and there was nothing to indicate it was an undercover truck. The protesters rocks struck the vehicle and THEN the armed men came out of hiding and started firing. If the men hadn't been there the driver would have been injured or killed by the protestors, and the protestors struck first, therefore it is self defence.

This looks like an undercover special ops duty against gang members in Ahtlone. Remember police still had to enforce the law but it is easy to take something like this, like so many other things of that time, and turn it into propaganda.
