Right now dollars are backed by nothing, except that you can be arrested or fined if you don't take them. They're backed not by goods but by force. (a) The stimulus packages and government buyouts have artificially held up consumption.

(b) There is the false perception that the wholly fiat USD is still of value, despite having no gold standard.
