Wow, you guys are all being so dramatic... Honestly, I've cut many things with my fingers/hand in front of the blade, and as long as you're careful, deliberate and you know what you're doing, you should have no problems. Everyone who is freaking out would probably not be careful or deliberate.

An easier and dare I say safer way is to top and tail the squash, then stand it upright. It doesnt move around then and you can just push your knife straight down through the middle. Thats how I do them anyway :)
