  • Clarification: the original of Devil Woman was indeed the B side of Party Doll. However, this version is a later re-cut on Liberty. (The original was more ragged, with lots of dropped beats; the odd-length lines are intentional here.) I loved Knowx's voice and atitude; he was also one of the few legitimately-received rockabillies with a college degree, which he credited in an interview for his gentler and lighter technique. It's sad he died so soon. R&RHOF? Definitely!

  • Good chance it was the version that was recorded on 'Hard Knox & Bobby Sox', the Devil Woman cut recorded at Regent Sound Studios, London, 1979, Eddie Jones Lead Guitar.

  • j'aime........rien a dire.......

  • If you, like me, feel Buddy should ABSOLUTELY be in the R&R Hall of Fame, please write them a letter or e-mail and request they consider doing this.

Just look for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Google and enter your comment on their site.

Only with our help will Buddy Knox get the recognition he deserves and that is WAY overdue.

  • Thanks for posting Buddy's song--I hope I see the day that the R&R Hall of Fame has the sense to put Buddy in there--he is WAY overdue. This version of Devil woman sounds like one he may have done while in Canada--it is good enough but too much of a polka beat to it with the drums or bass chunking away!

  • Great channel. I am old enough to remember this sound the 1st time around. Magic stuff.I have been a champion of Buddy Knox for years. I reckon if anyone wants to hear a record that epitomizes the 50s, listen to Buddy Knox Party Doll or Charlie Gracie,Fabulous.I used to play this sort of record [78s] of course,on my old radiogram, with some of the local girls sitting on my front steps listening. This was in the Teddy boy days & was in West London.

  • I always loved his voice and so much of his material, but this is not the original version, which was a rhythmic disaster. I was told by someone in the business that he had terrible timing as far as when he entered a phrase. That said, this remake corrects the problems of the original, but you're right, Michael, it's not quite as "frantic." I think the bigger backbeat helped him find the right entrances, yet the country phrasing still "breathes" right. Thanks for the post!

  • the flip of Party Doll was sung by Jimmy Bowen on D and Roulette records.

  • The original release of Devil Woman was B sided with Hula Love. The B side of Party Doll was Rock Your Little Baby's. I know back in those days the labels would re-issue one hit and B side it with another hit but Devil Woman, was released on Roulette Records and Backed with Hula Love, and Party Doll, akso on Roulette Records was backed with Rock Your Little Baby's

  • Great Song and I loved it. One of the best. Buddy was the best and will always be that way forever. Thank you for putting this up.

  • I didn't know he had died(Feb. '99)- lung cancer from lifelong cigarette smoking.

  • Many thanks for posting this great song, one of my Buddy Knox favorites.

Thanks for the great photos and greetings from Germany

  • You're welcome, and greetings right back to you from a retiree in sunny warm Puerto Rico..

  • You're so welcome, and thanks for this comment. The version I have doesn't quite sound the way I remember it on the old 45 I had either. Maybe I should have speeded it up 1 or 2 percent. I know that there was a re-make of Party Doll, so do you know if this was re-recorded? No matter, your dad still rocks today!

  • This is not the original version. I have various cd's and unless you get one that is off the original records, all you will get is later versions. They still rock anyway but Donny's guitar had alot to do with the sound of the record.

  • thanks for the post... it's cool that people have these songs...

but WOW this version is really slow... sounds like dad was 60 instead of 20..lol

    thanks

    Knox

  • Michael, IMO your father was extremely underrated as to his music & talent. More folks should know about him, & as far as I'm concerned, he should be in the RR Hall of Fame. His music & style (with "Party Doll") was very great & unique in a time when music was going through a turmoil, with rock taking over-he was 1 of the 1st "rockers" to have a #1 song with "Party Doll" during that time. (1st heard it as a kid in the late 70's & still love it!) I have the 2x J.Bowen/B.Knox CD set & cherish it!
