Marijuana is psychoactive because it stimulates certain brain receptors, but it does not produce toxins that kill them (like alcohol), and it does not wear them out as other drugs may. There is no evidence that marijuana use causes brain damage. Studies performed on actual human populations will confirm these results, even for chronic marijuana users (up to 18 joints per day) after many years of use.
There is no existing evidence of anyone dying of a marijuana overdose. Tests performed on mice have shown that the ratio of cannabinoids (the chemicals in marijuana that make you high) necessary for overdose to the amount necessary for intoxication is 40,000:1.
For comparison's sake, that ratio for alcohol is generally between 4:1 and 10:1. Alcohol overdoses claim approximately 5,000 casualties yearly, but marijuana overdoses kill no one as far as any official reports.
This guy knows what he is talking about, unlike the rest of our idiotic governments. Also slightlyreterded brings up a great point, a very great point indeed.

Marijuana is a gateway herb not drug and the gateway is imprisionment, lost money, and learning to be a criminal. If you use marijuana and not get arrested for it you won't end up a criminal. I've been using it for 11 years and I've never been arrested for anything, because I am a good person. I just happen to enjoy smoking weed. I have a loving wife of 11 years and two beautiful children. I work for what I have and I think I should have the right to use marijuana. I believe...
Like it or not, regardless of religion or Government, People are, and always will be experimental by nature.

I'm a conservative and I kind of like Gravel, but I like Ron Paul more. However, I'd rather vote for Gravel (definitely more of a Libertarian then a Democrat) than McCain.
wow, this guy makes so much sense! I don't use illegal substances but his ideas are great, maybe a little radical but prohibition didn't work and neither did the war on drugs. Tax cannibis fund schools!
I really really like this guy's ideas but he's a bit too much of an idealist. We might be ready for what Gravel is suggesting 20-30 years from now. Great ideas, but unfortunately these ideas are too radical at this point in our society for them to be practical. I totally respect this guy though, he has some amazing ideas.
While I support this guy and admire him for his teling the truthI highly suggest voting for Obama. His ideas are realistic given our current situation, more conservative on the political spectrum, practical, not an awful person like Hillary.
This guy's principle that it's a HEALTH problem and not a criminal one is right on. Unfortunately, how to deal with such a problem (coke) is not easy. Most prisons need to invest into rehabilitation instead of merely punishing criminals, doing very little to help the problem. Punishing is like treating the symptoms without getting at the root cause.
Americans are plenty ready for Gravel. He just doesn't have the millions of dollars and media hyping him up every night so most Americans don't even know who he is. Just follow Obama's money to see where he's coming from.
Real answers to real issues - real change has to be controversial - otherwise it's the same old shit - I did 2 years in a Texas prison and had I chosen to do so, I could have developed statewide, nationwide and international drug connections - In fact i watched many others do so - Texas alone releases 100,000 people a year from prison - If you really oppose drug use , bring it out in the open, get real with education and treatment, mainstream the money - Stop supporting a failed policy
he is a fucking evil moron. he wants to legualize dugs. no wayyyyyyy. he is evil. all of the canidates are wake up. they all say what you want to hear. have you ever seen improvement nope. lies its all lies. I was going to vote for him, but now after learning this, I know he is a piece of shit. wake up people think for yourselfs. there are more of us then them, we can defeat the insaity
I honestly don't know anyone among my friends who doesn't smoke pot... And they're all successful professionals. I smoke pot myself and I still remember how scared I was the first time I tried it because of all the propaganda I had bought into... But I can attest from first hand experience that there's NO physical addiction. I've smoked pot regularly for months and then quit cold turkey for several months without any problems, not even a headache...
(I can't say the same about coffee! ;) They're numerous studies made by respected institutions such as Harvard and MIT which prove that pot is much healthier than cigarets and alcohol...
So, why is it "evil"? Would you care to develop in way that would allow us to have a conversation that would go beyond the "you're stupid because you don't think like me" youtube level?
Finally, what Gravel says is that drugs should be a health/medical issue and not a criminal issue. Why is it "evil?" Following your own reasoning (ie: drugs are evil) then if someone is addicted, it's because drugs are evil, not because people are evil right? Shouldn't we help those people instead of convicted them?
don't get me wrong - I donated and will vote for him. I don't buy the "you gotta choose between the 2 rich people we picked for you" propaganda we get from corrupted mass media but most people unfortunately believe that Fox and Co. is information...
are you kidden me smart! you must only care about yourself, anyone with half a brain, would know any drug is evil. brainwashed moron. you want us all to die. I would never do drugs, but I would probbally die, from all the people around me doing them. fucking iddiott
me to.. America have a very big influent (don't know if i spelled that correctly) It's becomes legal there it will probably become legal in the most parts of the world.
Change the system and at the very least, there will be relatively less drugs, even if there are more people.
This would free up budget dollars, reduce crime from the underground drug economy, reduce the prison population, and stop the strain that the drug war wreaks on the inner city, which is disproportionately unfair to minorities.
More people means more drugs yah, but under control of the government at least.
Look at the prohibition of alcohol and how hard it was to control and how many MORE people started using it than when is was legal.
Its the same story with drugs.
P.S. I don't know this for sure but I've heard that if it were legalized, marijuana would be the largest and biggest crop and the one we'd get most money from. Anyone know that for sure?
its all propaganda. I don't smoke nor do I want to. But when America incarcerates more people than Nazi Germany on a per capita basis. Something is wrong!
Gravel is spot on! I believe this is the first time I have ever heard any politician tell the truth about this "Drug War!" It is a war on the American people, being carried out under the guise of protecting our children. It destroys America's children and their chances of an education; it is nothing more than another way for the government to keep their boot on the neck of every American.
yea dude i'm totally for legalization of marijuana! but not really for anything else.. like coke.. but marijuana should totally be legalized i don't understand why it's so fucking hated..
america started as a right wing country and i think that somehow smoking weed has been asosiated with being a "hippie"/leftist, this image needs to change, either start another prohibition with alcohol or legalize marijuana, it cant stay the way it is without it being hypocritical
I wouldn't. But more importantly, your question proves the understatement people make who think making ddrugs legal will fix the drug problem in general. Making drugs legal won't fix things, rather it will change on set of problems for another set of problems.
alcohol affects the body more negatively that marijuana weather you'd like to admit it or not. if you are a parent, ask yourself would you want your underage kids smoking marijuana or drinking alcohol? and if you are a kid as your parents that. if you are a an adult that makes their own decisions then ask yourself that.
GRAVEL this comment is directed to you and you only . If you had any backbone at all you wouldn't even think about legalizing pot. You would be running on a ticket to illegalze- alcohol -cigs- pot- pharmacuticals-. what is your comment?
You really think that Mike Gravel sits at a computer screen 24 hours a day searching for questions he can answer that are asked by somebody who has no idea what the hell they are talking about? If he didn't have a backbone, he wouldn't be for legalizing drugs and marijuana. He would support people being arrested for having drugs on them instead of getting help like the other seven Democratic candidates.
Prohibition in th US was a huge problem for many reasons. It increased crime, primarily theft and murder. It was bad for the economy as other countries which had distilleries flourished with the absence of American distilleries.
In many ways Gravel actually answers why he is not for making alcohol and cigs illegal in this video. It would mean EVEN more people in jail. He wants to solve this problem of drugs be criminalized. Making alcohol illegal would only make that worse.
That would be impossible. Both of these men would make amazing Presidents, but they have radically different economical views. They agree on drug legalization only because it's not liberal vs. conservative, like he said, it's common sense.
He doesn't even scratch the surface of the real human-rights atrocity The-War-On-Some-Drugs is. He needs to research this crucial issue much more. There are hundreds of facts he could drop on this topic instead of stuttering. (For instance the national murder rate plummeted to half of what it was immediately following the repeal of alcohol prohibition, etc. etc. ad infinitum...)
i agree we should critisize him for bringing the issue up and making sense and not being perfect but being completely relevant. nice stat thought. how bout you send him the stats. bet you money he will use them.he is smart enough to use them. be positve homie, thats what everybody needs and hand up not a hand the face.

Its the number one cash crop!!!!!
You go ahead and plant a garden of pot, around 100,000 dollars right? Go ahead and plant 50 acres of corn, not even close!!
50 pound bags of corn cost 5-15 dollars.. 50 pound bags of weed cost 75,000 ++..
Wow..
Also
Did you know? * In 1998, Americans spent $11 billion on marijuana. * According to the DEA, Americans smoke 5,000,000 pounds of weed every year.
Number of deaths from pot-0
Number of deaths from tobacco-BILLIONS

america started as a right wing country and i think that somehow smoking weed has been asosiated with being a "hippie"/leftist, this image needs to change, either start another prohibition with alcohol or legalize marijuana, it cant stay the way it is without it being hypocritical

Everyone who doesnt do drugs, I ask you this: If drugs were legalized today would you start using them?
I rest my case.
End the War.
Gitmaker55 4 years ago 6
I wouldn't. But more importantly, your question proves the understatement people make who think making ddrugs legal will fix the drug problem in general. Making drugs legal won't fix things, rather it will change on set of problems for another set of problems.

alcohol affects the body more negatively that marijuana weather you'd like to admit it or not. if you are a parent, ask yourself would you want your underage kids smoking marijuana or drinking alcohol? and if you are a kid as your parents that. if you are a an adult that makes their own decisions then ask yourself that.

thats not liberal - thats common sense - just common sense!
right on! Btw, i guess it would be more accurate - if anything - to say its a libertarian, anti-authoritarian issue than a left-wing one.

GRAVEL this comment is directed to you and you only . If you had any backbone at all you wouldn't even think about legalizing pot. You would be running on a ticket to illegalze- alcohol -cigs- pot- pharmacuticals-. what is your comment?
l42 4 years ago

Gravel had already been talking for some time on the subject when I was able to turn on the camera, so I didn't get his opening comments.

Still, the most wonderful thing that could happen to the world would be a Paul/Gravel on an Independent or Constitutional Union Party ticket.
teleomorph 4 years ago
do you think that paul would be behind the national initiative?
thedaoofplus1 4 years ago
That would be impossible. Both of these men would make amazing Presidents, but they have radically different economical views. They agree on drug legalization only because it's not liberal vs. conservative, like he said, it's common sense.
nocheenlatierra 4 years ago
He doesn't even scratch the surface of the real human-rights atrocity The-War-On-Some-Drugs is. He needs to research this crucial issue much more. There are hundreds of facts he could drop on this topic instead of stuttering. (For instance the national murder rate plummeted to half of what it was immediately following the repeal of alcohol prohibition, etc. etc. ad infinitum...)
teleomorph 4 years ago
i agree we should critisize him for bringing the issue up and making sense and not being perfect but being completely relevant. nice stat thought. how bout you send him the stats. bet you money he will use them.he is smart enough to use them. be positve homie, thats what everybody needs and hand up not a hand the face.
