Bits and Pieces catolog has a very nice beginners set. You can also but extra brushes and ink and a wondefully instructional book. All beautifully packaged and priced affordably.
@dinasaur2 There are two types of brushes in eastern art: Wolf Hair brushes and Goat hair brushes. Wolf hairs have thin heads, making them best suited for outlines, small details, etc., whereas Goat hairs have thick heads making them suitable for petals, coloring in, leaves, etc. I hope that clarifies things for you!:)
hi! i'm thinking of starting to draw sumi-e because i realy love this form of art. However, i live in greece and it's kind of hard to get the ingredients to draw sumi-e. can someone please tell aproximately how much it costs (if it's expensive or not) and where i can find the supplies? thanks!
@ashtray0belief I got my small kit of basic sumi-e materials (Ink stone, ink stick and brush) in a travel sized wooden box for around 18 USD (internet page)....I got another kit (Ink Stone, Ink Stick, Brushes [2], Seal, red ink [for the seal] for around 14 USD in a local art store. I hope this has helped you. :D
Hi:) I bought a sumi paint set, and it came with brushes, brush holder, ink stick, the dish you grind the ink stick in, a tiny bowl with a tiny spoon, and a beautifully painted white stone. The stone is heavy, and rectangular in shape, and I was wondering what is it for? I have no clue, and I would really like to know. Btw, I love your work and thank you for sharing.
@MegaAnabanana hi..the white stone you speak of is sopestone and it for carving your own "chop" or "seal" google sumi e chop..it is is the red stamped kanji's and such patterns you see on sumi paintings..i cannot believe that the author of this video di not relize that.lol a paperweight not..
@shuska1234 hi, you need to load brighter black to thick black in one brush hair so that you can get gradation. that's why step by step is necessary. In terms of the percentage of water to ink, 10% of ink and 90% of water will be the brightest black, almost gray. Kazu
0:20 Sumie Calligraphy by alternating lifting and pressing the brush head you get all the shapes and tones in your strokes. 1:18 Soak a large goat hair in the water, squize out extra water; dilute some dark ink with water to get light gray and then touch a little bit dark ink on the tip.You are ready to go.
2:00 Tip-centered brush strokes, hold the brush perpendicular to the paper and keep the brush tip in the center of strokes. To do bamboo leaves, Start the movement towards the opposite direction in the air before touching the paper and lift the Bruch gradually towards the end. Keep drawing till the ink exhaust.
2:14 Side Reload the brush and hold the brush in a slanted position, using the side of brush to paint in bold strokes where the tip of brush is on one side, with gradation from dark brush on the top to light in the bottom.
Hey there Kazu, I've been practicing japanese calligraphy for the past couple months and I'm still a beginner, but the sumi-e painting looks amazing. Do you use the same brushes as you do in shoudo? I have fairly new brushes that dont stay bent like yours do. Is that just because of how new they are?
I guess that is because it is for shodo. I assume that the brush you have has very long hair and very soft.. Some of brush are able to use both, but the brush for sumi-e would be better that it has harder hair.. Kazu
Thank you for your helpful demonstration! I plan on trying Sumi-e for myself and I'm just happy I found your channel. It's mesmerizing, watching your level of control when you are painting.
Could you recommend a book on Sumi-e to learn from?
I have no idea of english written book about sumi-e..sorry.. but the book which tells about how to draw the line would be trustful. because hte line drawing is the keypoint of sumi-e drawing.
Thanks a lot for your reply. I have looked at some books and most don't seem to go into much detail about how to draw lines. That this is the most important factor makes sense though. I've ordered one book now for starters, which seems to provide that, called "The Sumi-e Book" by Yolanda Mayhall. I'll see how useful this will prove, but in any case I'm happy to have your excellent videos to learn from. Cheers again.
I think 1.5 cm in diameter, 4 cm for the length of hair is good for beginners. I have started with this size and still using. "watercolor" brush's hair is harder than sumi-e one. It might be difficult to bend a brush hair, to get gradatinon in sumi-e.
lol nice intro

Hello Kazu,
I am just starting to get fascinated my Sumi-e painting....
You lessons and videos are astonishing!!! And also very peaceful to watch :)
What sizes of brushes Do you think I should get as a beginner? Are the sumi-e brush sizes equivalent to the traditional watercolor brush sizes?
Thanks for everything!
