I was just thinking of this the other day at the dentist. My dentist is a fan of this show and I brought this scene up and we both laughed. Loved the a--hole bomb Vickie dropped. This to me is hands down the greatest scene, I still laugh hard at this!
I remember seeing this on tv when it happened! To this day it is PRICELESS! I miss that show so much! I was in the audience 2X when the show was taped. Wish I had been there for this! Carol's show is one of my all time fav's! Still a HUGE fan of hers!
i wish they could get jonathon winters, robin williams and tim conway in a room and just let them go at it. that is one video i would pay good money to see and the proceeds could go to charity or something
FNORK!!! OMG!! I laughed so hard my face still burts!! Endless hours of enjoyment with the Carol Burnett Show! Tim Conway was always my favorite!! Hahahahaha, OMG! can't breathe,,,, arrgh!! Thank you so very much for this!!
if you watch tim closely, even he is having a hard time keeping a straight face. lol. i'm 18 years old, and man, this stuff is pure gold. everything on tv now is just nasty.
The elephant squashed him.......... they had to shoot the elephant. :) i don't know if its a rumor or not, but they were buried together. :) can i get a top comment? :)
If you look closely, there are several moments here where Vicki (as the acid-tongued Mama) comes close to losing it. That alone is tribute to how wicked funny Tim Conway could be; of all the castmates Vicki Lawrence was the best at staying in character when everyone else around her--Harvey, Carol and whoever was the guest star--was falling apart. But of course she gets the last laugh with that topper of an ad-lib. Love how Carol sprawls and Conway and Van Dyke fall to the floor in hysterics.
@TheBim1987 Considering it took Vicki, Carol, and Dick nearly 5 minutes to continue the scene until Tim had finished his story, that was all the time Vicki needed for a good comeback I guess.
@TheBim1987 Considering it took Vicki, Carol, and Dick nearly 5 minutes to continue the scene until Tim had finished his story, that was all the time Vicki needed for a good comeback I guess.
Shows taped before alive audience could do things like this to get the audience laughing hysterically, then go on with the sketch and edit the imrpovised parts out, leaving the audience to laugh more than thyey would at the other parts. It sure beats a laugh track.Red Skelton did this, too which is why the actors on his show and this own often had a hard time containing their own laughter.
Twice Carol knows that she will have to let Tim continue due to his great set up lines or...if she doesn't the audience would have rebeled..."there was a rumor that trainer and the elephant were lovers"..."it's just that I was at a freak show once and I saw these Siamese elephants". You CANNOT stop the story then! Then from 2:20 to 3:00 you can see Tim's mind forming the upcoming story as he tries to contain himself. The timing here is classic beyond words. CLASSIC.
@gurlsingerfan So very true, these guys (with the exception of Dick Van Dyke), plus Harvey Corman who was not on the show in that season were the best sketch players ever and Conway was one of the best ad-libbers around. Classic stuff indeed...timeless. I remember seeing this sketch when the show aired on Sat. nights, looked forward to it every week.
Re: pug40 'Harvey Korman' is the regular Carol Burnett Show actor's name [check him on IMDB] , However in THIS sketch the giggling actor is indeed the great Dick Van Dyke.
@YayasMedia Right, it's Dick Van Dyke. A DVD Who can hardly control himself from laughter brought on by the other great comics who surround him.
Somewhat like watching the gods "humoring" the other gods, as it were.
Moreover, the way TC tweaks Burnett's sensibilitiies here is just excellent.... ;D Pretty hard, I imagine, to do something that would cause Burnett to bust a gut...but here we actually see it. :)
See also: Burnett flashing fake boobs for more of the same.
THIS IS THE FUNNIEST THING I HAVE SEEN ON THIS SHOW WHICH IS SAYING ALOT. THEY WERE ALWAYS TRYING TO MAKE ANOTHER CAST MEMBER BREAK UNDER PRESSURE, BUT THIS HAS ME CRACKING UP UNCONTROLLABLY EVERY TIME I SEE IT. LONG LIVE CAROL AND CREW
One of the funniest shows ever..Love watching one commediene crack up the other cast members live. I too love this pure comedy, but have also grown to like thing's like two and a half men. I am just glad my kid's grew up in purer time's. They would would have been sent out of the room constantly in this day.

I don't know if we've gotten too crude or desensitized or commercial, but watching things like this sure makes me wish I was born a whole hell of a lot earlier. The comedy seemed a whole lot more genuine.
I used to watch this show growing up and I miss shows like this. These skits made you laugh and they didn't have to be crude or dirty to do it. This is one of my favorite skits from the Carol Burnette show.
I'm posting this just for my dear lovely wife! She saw this and was laughing so hard, I thought she was going to have an accident. Now when we have company over, and they see the spot on the couch..."oh, it was one of the pets"! If you ever come over to visit, PLEASE...DO NOT MAKE the "Snerph" sound!!!!
I'm fairly young but I still remember watching this show. When I watch stuff today, especially 'Two and a Half Men', I think back to the Carol Burnett Show and wonder how they managed to be so funny without resorting to penis, poo and semen jokes. Rhetorical question of course.
You don't have to be crude to get laughs. Too bad we've sunk so low.
Fraiser's gone, Everybody loves Raymond is gone. There are few if any genuinely funny, clean shows anymore.
@nitedrive I agree COMPLETELY with you. I'm 28, and in my lifetime I have seen television and entertainment plummet to the depths of just plain gross and uninspiring. I miss TV shows that a family can relate to, laugh along with, and be uplifted by. Seriously, just turning on a television set is a major risk because we are exposing ourselves to a bunch of CRAP...and sadly, we're all getting so used to it that we don't even question it anymore. We SHOULD. We need more shows like this one again...
@nitedrive I totally agree. I do not even watch modern sitcoms since I do not find them funny in any way. All I watch are educational channels, dvds, and of course youtube. It's kind of scary to think what television will be like in another 15 years?
@nitedrive And yet Tim Conway's story is about bestiality... seems there's a penis joke in there somewhere. Then the final funny is where Vicki Lawrence uses a crude word.
I know I've watched this a hundred times but it busts me up everytime.Too bad there insn't anybody or ensemble that evengets close to being this funny. Absolutely love them.
I've seen this clip many times, and it always makes me laugh. You gotta love Tim's smile at 2:13. Of course, Carol's trying to keep from losing it pretty much throughout! This is just great stuff!
I remember my parents putting me to bed when I was a kid, and they would watch this show. I could hear them laughing hysterically. Looking at these clips, this must have been awesome to see this live on tv at that time.
In response to a question about who could possibly have the talent of Carol Burnett (comedy, singing, dancing, etc.) and do a variety show similar to hers, Tim Conway said, "The Kardashians." He's too funny!
That brings back so many funny memories of laughing out loud at their antics. I could hardly wait for them to be on because it always ended up with them breaking up at their own skits!!! I miss that kind of comedy!
@FritzOmnibus Why so cynical? They have since had interviews with Carol and Tim, and they revealed that they would schedule an 'open' script moment for Tim and no one would know beforehand what he was going to do. It made for madness and magic. They are wonderful memories for me. ; )
Great example of the power of symbolic based communication. Much like radio, you are able to listen to the story and complete the improbable images in your own mind, One or two words some may find offensive but they may be laughing so hard they don;t hear them in the video
@DarthSideous63 = Actually, Korman left for the final season - but Van Dyke did NOT replace him. Dick was in only 13 total episodes for the entire series run. He merely played a member of the family in this sketch.
Comments I cnt help but notice that how some people can feel great by blowing their own trumpet. I saw many carol clips here on utube thanks to all those peps who uploaded these gems.
@mightydyckerson honestly i still cnt belive you could keep up the conversation. You seriously need consultation little man. Seriously. You did not get the hint even when i said she is dead.
PURE GENIUS.

That is so bloody brilliant. You just don't find comedians who can just do that anymore.

The greatest thing about the Carol Burnett show was when they tried to hold in their laughter to keep from cracking up. :)

Classic Tim Conway

They made this cracking up on set stuff a staple of the show. I enjoyed it at first but then it sort of wore thin.
FritzOmnibus 4 months ago in playlist Carol Burnett, Johnny Carson, Outtakes
@FritzOmnibus Why so cynical? They have since had interviews with Carol and Tim, and they revealed that they would schedule an 'open' script moment for Tim and no one would know beforehand what he was going to do. It made for madness and magic. They are wonderful memories for me. ; )

Great example of the power of symbolic based communication. Much like radio, you are able to listen to the story and complete the improbable images in your own mind, One or two words some may find offensive but they may be laughing so hard they don;t hear them in the video

Tim Conway is awesome. He always make Carol and Harvey crack up.
DarthSideous63 4 months ago
which episod is this from?
saedog50 4 months ago
@saedog50 It was the final season when Harvey Korman Left and Dick Van Dyke took his place.
DarthSideous63 4 months ago
@DarthSideous63 = Actually, Korman left for the final season - but Van Dyke did NOT replace him. Dick was in only 13 total episodes for the entire series run. He merely played a member of the family in this sketch.

@mightydyckerson honestly i still cnt belive you could keep up the conversation. You seriously need consultation little man. Seriously. You did not get the hint even when i said she is dead.
rshekdar 3 months ago
@rshekdar Thanks for confirming Carol Burnett is dead. That should put to rest any rumors that she is still alive.
