The Soviets were always at the top, but sadly they got forced into gymnastics and were pushed really hard. They're all so small because of the work load and how little they were allowed to eat. They were amazing, though.
Soviet people was the most gorgeous and friendly people of the world..... now this is only the past. the collapse of the USSR was a real tragedy for us.
Love it!! This is what gymnastics should look like. These gymnasts artisrty and execution totally trumps gymnasts of today (with the exception of a small handfull). Thanks for sharing. I love the Soviets.
@tristalista Yeah, but they still were trained and formed in the Soviet national team. The 'last of the Soviets' were Khorkina and Nemov - who retired long after the dissolution of the USSR.
OMG!!! I was going to take gmnastics but I have too weak wrists so I started ballet... But there's no doubt... I TOTALLY LOVE THIS!!! Now I dnt know what to do!!!
@BritneysOnlyLover I think also the end of the massive subsidies and pressure apparatus during the Soviet era have something to do with the decline. But still, compare gymnastics even now to gymnastics in the pre-Soviet era and clearly it is still better than before, even if it is not as good as it was during the peak. I suspect the Soviet era was a showcase of gymnastics at its absolute best within the realm of possibility.
Hi, who's the little firecracker at 4:50? I was a gymnast and absolutely loved doing it ('79 -'89) and watching it, but now I can barely watch it anymore. it seems so mechanical and no room for sparks of individuality. where's the character and joy gone? :(
The gymnast at 4:50 with the short red hair is Elena Shevchenko. She was a member of the 1988 Olympic team. I think her floor routine in this montage is from the 1986 Goodwill Games judging from the yellow carpeting.
I´ll be damned...does anyone here know who´s the girl doing floor exercise starting at 1:29....that was some brutal speed and perfection. What´s her name?
We know only the ablest athletes can attain something like this, and also years of hard training and discipline...but whenever i watch moves like those of this girl i say "hey...are these girls human beings?" I mean, its alien beahvior.
I think its a little unfair to say gymnastics isn't beautiful anymore.... Look at Anna Pavlova and Nasti Liukin! both of them look incredibly beautiful I think.... Particularly Ms. Pavlova.
omg i used to be a gymnast but Support4MySingers does have a good point it isnt like it used to be im going to start gymnastics again and i hope we can bring the dance and grace back i switched out of gymnasticks to do ariel (gymnastics in the air) because of those reasons ariel has the grace that i was looking for so i've been good but i was never really satisfied so im going back 2 gymnastics but i might have 2 switch out of it altogether because of school and modeling :(

WHATTTTTT?! lolz. okay. Yeah.... better keep people in a communist country ruled by corrupt dictators that starve and murder the people they're supposed to be governing whenever it benefits them for the sake of gymnastics. great idea.
No 1 does it like this anymore. 2 days Gymnasts do nothing but tricks & do WAY 2 many of them at a time & it just looks boring & all the same. All the dance, grace and beauty is no longer apart of the sport! This is the way I used 2 do it when I 1st started 7 I'm a guy now 25 but through my teens I did it exactly like this & ended up getting kicked out 4 not doing it there so called "Right way". I did it 2 much like a girl & looked 2 graceful but FUCK I always looked better than the others!
The gymnast at 3:52 is the great Dina Kochetkova of Russia- 1994 Goodwill Games AA Champion, 1994 Floor Exercise Gold Medalist. I think she was so underrated. She was on the 1996 Russian Olympic team with Khorkina, though I much prefer Dina's style to Khorkina's.
I'm glad somebody else thinks like I do about Dina. She NEVER got the recognition she deserved. Dina was a gymnast cut from a mold similar to the great Shushunova - hard, serious, dedicated, focused.
Thanks a lot to the creator of this video. I watched it a least 10 times!!! In plus a good choice of the music. Bravo the russian gymnasts! The bets and most elegant.
I agree with "SilivasGold." I can't tell 100% that it's Lyssenko at :38, as I can't see her beautiful face, but it's a 1992 Olympics' uniform, and she has very curly hair and a double-twisting Yurchenko, so it must be Lyssenko. It is definitely the amazing Latvian Laschenova on vault and floor. Natalia Laschenova had the BEST full-twisting Yurchenko of all time. You must search under Laschenova 1989 World Championships to view her "Hall of the Mountain King" FE.
i love gymnastics! but i think i have only just realised how amazing it is. as i fall deeper into this sport, i'll probably appreciate it more and more. yes, gymnastics was once really beautiful, but i beleive its future is even brighter than its past, and i'm ready to dedicate my life to making it better and more beautiful than ever!
probably about 11, i think she started competing on a senior level in 1994 so she must have been 14. The soviet union fell in 1991 but the united team competed at the 1992 olympics anyway because they'd been training as a team. She's probably i this montage because she trained under the soviet regime and must have competed for the soviets as a junior.

Why do you have Khorkina (2:58P in your montage? She wasn't a Soviet Gymnast, she's a Russian Gymnast. She started competing on the elite lvl in 1994. Four years after the fall of the USSR.
Yet Khorkina and Kotchetkova and Fabrichnova and Grosheva all trained under the soviet system for years before it fell. They were the last to carry on part of that legacy.
Amazing, amazing gymnats. We can only hope that they know how much we love and appreciate them. I quite coaching because I didn't want to use a gymnast as my creative medium. However I loved training through a no spot system. These young people are stunning: self confident; free will?. Let us always be mindful of the effect that we have on the ideas of perfection, success, and risk.
I like Yelena Produnova
She could dance and beat anyone
But she is not in this montage : (

4:23 to 4:27 - look at that; she stumbles a little but turns it into a dramatic "falling onto my knees" and it still looks beautiful.
Nowadays, it's all about luck: is this non-beautiful routine going to be the one I don't lose any balance on or...?

Because she trained in soviet union for over 10 years, and she had a soviet coach. She did compete earlier but not as a senior
