Yer the genius of Jaws is what you DON'T see, it's all about the implied danger; if it was done these days 3/4 of the film would be taken up with scenes of a CGI shark and lots of random gore because that's what hollywood now thinks is scary!

@JackRabbitSlim thats why I thought JP and Cloverfield were good. In JP the opening scene doesn't show the raptor and we're not shown the raptors until they suddenly leap out. In Cloverfield, we see only tiny bits of the monster before, like in Jaws, it makes its close up towards the end.

@JackRabbitSlim Less is more. The thing that really scares us about the ocean and the fact that sharks live there is that we are almost utterly defenseless there. The water is their domain and they are the apex predators. 

You can't see very well in the water so you never know where to look for the danger.

@stopthesoftkill LMAO, thanks for a great prank idea! I usually program my cell phone alarm to play the somewhat ominous-sounding beginning of J. S. Bach's Toccata and Fugue for Organ in D Minor (used for some versions of "Phantom of the Opera") for all my dental appointments, but my dentist and her staff thought it was funny when I played it for them, because they know most people hate going there. Well, I can just download and program "Theme from Jaws" and see if they still laugh as much.

from the start spielberg wanted the shark in the opening scene but the shark wouldnt work in the salt water so spielberg thought of hitchcock and how he wud do it and came up with the notion of "implying" so that the audience could use their imagination to fill in whats going on under the water This is more scarier then showing whats going on. So when u see this throughout the film its because the "dam shark" wouldnt work... it wasnt thought up from the start, it was born out of nessesity

the scene at the start where the girl is pulled around by the shark was done by 10men each side pulling a rope, she was attached to a harness, and pulled either way then under. for the under shot spielberg was on the rope for the close up shot of her going under. the on the water level shot was achived by putting a camera in a large black box with a view finder and placed at the surface of the water. gving the illusion of a sharks pov

not true..it was the same kid, they had to do the same take 4times before they put a diver in with the kid to hold him under water, the raft was filled with fake blood and filling substance that resembled flesh, so when it exploded the diver pushed the boy up in the air 4 times before pulling him under and giving him oxegen. The kids @mother wasnt acting and said she felt like it was real and acted accordingly..she thought it was real..lol but it was the same kid in all shots

When this was finished by John Williams, Spielberg actually laughed his head off when he heard this, and asked if it was a joke. Now he says the film wouldn't have been what it is without the soundtrack.
