I drove this route last week, a bit gnarly but with enough attention it isn' all that dangerous. Go clockwise if you want to stay away from passing on the drop-offs. Also it is a scenic untamed trek into what Maui used to look like. I also did the SE route back from Hana which was even easier.
HAHA! We drove that road yesterday. Why didn't you post the section of road right after this? The one going down the cliff. That was hella scary!! The banana bread down there is definitely the best on the planet. We've tried all the ones in Hana and it's got nothing on Julie's banana bread. The road to Hana is a freeway compared to the Kahakuloa stretch. To the families in Kahakuloa, Much LOVE!!
Wow, now Im glad I didnt drive this road..what do you do if you meet up with others coming the other way? Ya, and your woman is right, SLOW DOWN...if you hit a pure hawaiian he aint gonna take it lightly lol.
@ellonysman You are kinda right. It was very narrow in parts and I was worried about that situation too. However, from my viewpoint I could see farther ahead and wanted to get back to a regular lanes before finding someone coming my way. Luckily, we never encountered anyone. Beautiful drive though.
That brings back memories of driving down that road a few summers ago. Scared the daylights out of me! Had to backup to let another car go by. Once is enough--I'll never go back in a car that's for sure!
@mathteacher1954 Yes, I think that once is enough as well. Got to do that road at least once. Now I can say that I have been completely around the island.
I live here and that road always makes me nervous, because sometimes there are crazy locals who live in that villiage down there and drive fast because they know that road sooo well..blah blah, I felt your pain..lol
@abby8292 I love lahaina! What do you work at there? Tony Bennett may have left his heart in Sanfransisco but mine is right there in Maui! sigh..... rick/vancouver, bc
My hubby would have been so busted! Hats off to you sister for maintaining your cool better than I could have. I got scared just watching. I freak out on roads like that!
