I'd just like to point out that Ramirez practically had to beg to get into the UFC.
If he was going to put that much effort into just getting a fight, you'd think he'd AT LEAST be in good enough shape to not be at risk for a heart attack.
Yeah it was a joke. You had a couple of real fighters mixed in with 'tough guys'.
I remember a guy called Pat Stewart(?) mounted a 10th dan ninja guy and rained blows down on him - which just really messed up his face. Pat stopped himself and you could see he was pissed at the guy's corner because they didnt throw in the towel and the ref was a tad too slow.
Really unprofessional. It brought the importance of jijitsu forward (even though it was biased)
@TacticalGearJunkie At the risk of injuring the other fighter? Learn how to stop a fight probably John McCarthy! The best one through, was when he ran full speed across the cage and tackled Frank Mir off of Was Sims at UFC 46. Mir did a back flip and could have broke his neck.
Don Frye was soooooo much better when he wasn't roided up. I think more fans probably liked him then than in his later career as he was a more 'normal' hero than some beefed up yeehaw
I understand the frustration with watching 15 minutes of passive lay and pray, but would you still be a fan if you had to pay money to watch guys like this with zero ability getting mopped up in under 5 seconds?
You got to be a little less jaded. Don't pretend every match is Silva-Maia or Shields-Kampmann nor demand every match be a classic like Garcia-Jung I or Pettis-Henderson.
I always wondered what was going on in the UFC's heads when they got this fat, no-talent, unintimidating lard ass to fight in the main draw. Total fail.
@KlanMan800 Yeah, but the sport had to start somewhere. The fighters didn't have MMA down to a science back then, they were just doing the best they could with what they had. Don Frye was actually one of the first examples of someone who could both strike and grapple with some effectiveness back in the day.
It's amazing how quickly the sport evolves, though. There's a big difference between the fighters now and the fighters five years ago.
@berw00d ...HAHAH the new hybrid fighters nowdays would TERMINATE him , just like every1 said shogun rua would smash jones ...and matt hamill would smash jones , but no he threw the wrestler around like a kid , only lost the fight due to illegal strikes , i can guarentee jones would smash frye now , and would have if he was still prime
Somebody that big shouldnt be getting knocked out by arm punches from somebody half his size. Even if it is Don Frye. Thomas Ramirez, I hope this was your last attempt at a sport which requires some type of chin resistance.
I'm really confused about all the fat guys in early UFC. Did they think this was a comic book where being fat gives you powers? Had none of them fought a real live adult before? It made sense when i was 12, but looking back, what the hell was the selection process?
I miss the old UFC. They need to throw the gloves away and allow the hits that are illegal now. I loved the old tapes, but they're going to make themselves into professional wrestling in another 10 years.

@hallmonitor98 I agree, UFC won't let anyone fight for them unless they have total control over their careers, which is why Fedor has never bothered with them. And now that MMA is kind of a martial art in itself, often it just seems most people are clones and you don't see any really unique contestants anymore. It's partly because they are all more rounded in different areas, but would be nice to see more more unique fighters.

@Villesanti that has NOTHING to do with "latino community".
He was hardly in shape at all, and I even bet that he didn't have that much experience in striking.
Today, the thick and heavy guys at least know how to defend. Take Rothwell. He is very heavy, if not to say fat, but he has trained a lot, so it is ok.
Early UFC had more people who were clueless. Today, it has become professional (but i still miss early UFC because at least you saw more styles used, and had less rules ...)
Dude, the problem is that I was there. Actually I am from his home town too and being the only Puerto Rican represented it was a real shame! I too miss the old UFC :)
