I think affirmative action could be somewhat useful ( if modified) in the RACE sense but NOT in the gender sense since women already have MORE rights then men.

Well I don't know if its racism. All I know is that employers are forced by the federal government to seek out cannidates based on their race and gender just to fill a racial and gender quota...and they oftentimes lower the standards just to hire diversity cannidates and more often than not, these people are just not qualified to do those jobs and who suffers, the people they service, and the qualified cannidates are discriminated against. Standards should never be lowered just to fill a quota.

Because of affirmative action, I sometimes wonder if I got into graduate school because of the color of my skin and socioeconomic background. I've never thought of myself as particularly smart, and when I do bad in grad courses, I start thinking that my race was the only reason why I got in anywhere. It's really messed with my mind. I wish I could talk to my professors about it, but why should they care?
Affirmative Action is EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY. Not giving people jobs, giving them the CHANCE at a job. The best example I can come up with off the top of my head, if a factory has job openings, and only advertises these openings in a newspaper with 98% white readership, they're not doing a thing to give equal opportunity. Employers are required to make sure that they get notice of job openings in an equal way, that blacks are given the CHANCE at jobs. They get the jobs on MERIT.

MLK never said anything about Affiramtive action. Cite the example please. THe poinit of AA is to give minorities a free ride and to lash out at innnocent whites who did nothing wrong. Well we don't need it NOW. I studied hard in school, got good grades, and again, the only thing employers are interested in is what your race and gender is, and that is because employers are pressured to hire minorities wether they are qualified or not, just to comply with racial quotas and this has led to a lot of widesspread reverse discrimination. I believe MLK was saying that race and gender didn't and shouldn't matter, that the content, or qualifications is what mattered, not their race.

I have been asked many, many times and every time I apply for a job that I qualify for and after they've asked me what my race and gender is, and after I tell them I am a white male, I NEVER hear back from them again. Companies DO seek out minority cannidates just to fill their quotas and that is WRONG!

It is a fact that colleges and employers do lower the standards for minorities and women....and when they do take the same tests and when thye find that not enough minorities and women have passed the tests, they say that the tests are somehow racist and sexist against minorities and women. NASA was pressuried in the early sixites to push a black pilot who didn't measure up in any of the tests to become an astronaut. If you're not qualified for a job, you just shouldn't the get job period.

The way the law is currently if two people are equaly qualified and one is black and one is white, the one who is the minority will get the job because of the government's mandate for racial quotas, and again, because of these quotas is the reason why many minorities do get jobs over their white counterparts even if they are lesser qualified...why are almost every federal worker a minority? i hardly ever see any white civilian federal workers and they clearly work harder and more productive.

There's no way to measure quanitfiably the presence of discrimination in accordance with any scientific method.That being said, the sources you cite could be completely catered to the pro-AA argument. I think affirmative action could be somewhat useful ( if modified) in the RACE sense but NOT in the gender sense since women already have MORE rights then men.
For the most part I think blacks/Hispanics still face much racism but im not too sure that affirmative action is helping them to help themselves but rather subsidizing comfortable "poverty" instead of promoting progress.. im hispanic and racism hurts ALOT but we NEED to be self sufficient and affirmative action takes away that desire.

I don't know why people have such a hard time accepting that Blacks ans Whites evolved in different environments which favored different traits. Affirmative action would only work in a country with balanced racial percentages (25% white 25% black 25% hispanic 25% asian), but in the US its 60% white 15% black 10% hispanic rest others, you can't have 1 white person, 1 asian, 1 black and 1 hispanic in every single company, because there's lots of whites

If a white male gets something they've earned in life, than its racism, but if a undeserving minority or a female does, than its about diversity and making up for the historic wrongs of the past. Well I don't know if its racism. All I know is that employers are forced by the federal government to seek out cannidates based on their race and gender just to fill a racial and gender quota...and they oftentimes lower the standards just to hire diversity cannidates and more often than not, these people are just not qualified to do those jobs and who suffers, the people they service, and the qualified cannidates are discriminated against. Standards should never be lowered just to fill a quota.

Obama is not playing both sides with what he said; he's saying that affirmative discrimination is not potent enough to help minorities or hurt whites/asians. We need to lower the standards even more for minorities compared to whites/asians. Because of affirmative action, I sometimes wonder if I got into graduate school because of the color of my skin and socioeconomic background. I've never thought of myself as particularly smart, and when I do bad in grad courses, I start thinking that my race was the only reason why I got in anywhere. It's really messed with my mind. I wish I could talk to my professors about it, but why should they care?

Affirmative Action is EQUALITY OF OPPORTUNITY. Not giving people jobs, giving them the CHANCE at a job. The best example I can come up with off the top of my head, if a factory has job openings, and only advertises these openings in a newspaper with 98% white readership, they're not doing a thing to give equal opportunity. Employers are required to make sure that they get notice of job openings in an equal way, that blacks are given the CHANCE at jobs. They get the jobs on MERIT.

But the point was to give opportunities, I am a black student in an affirmative action state . MLK never said anything about Affiramtive action. Cite the example please. THe poinit of AA is to give minorities a free ride and to lash out at innnocent whites who did nothing wrong. Last year, four white firefighters were denied advancement after scoring at the highest on their tests...the reason? none of them was a minority. Thats discrimination and I don't believe MLK was for that kind of thing. MLK like JFK was for EQUALITY, not giving a certain demographic group preference.

Affermative action was needed because of the long standing damage that was done. The problem of discrimination ACTUAL still happens among minorities(housing ,jobs,education Etc...). remember MLK was not Santa Claus , he wasn't the super nice figure.I don't think we need it forever ,but there is still a way to go

Well we don't need it NOW. I studied hard in school, got good grades, and again, the only thing employers are interested in is what your race and gender is, and that is because employers are pressured to hire minorities wether they are qualified or not, just to comply with racial quotas and this has led to a lot of widesspread reverse discrimination. I believe MLK was saying that race and gender didn't and shouldn't matter, that the content, or qualifications is what mattered, not their race.

I earned my four year degree and I served my country in the military and Ive received awards and acolades for my graphic design work, and when I apply for jobs, the only thing that they are interested in is what my race and gender is just to fill a racial quota...and that is unfair. A majority of my co-workers are white and we both get along perfectly. Dude, it was nothing to do with the poor economy. I have been asked many, many times and every time I apply for a job that I qualify for and after they've asked me what my race and gender is, and after I tell them I am a white male, I NEVER hear back from them again. Why is that? Why are almost every federal workers are minoritries? What does my race and gender have to do with my qualifications for a job? Companies DO seek out minority cannidates just to fill their quotas and that is WRONG!

Maybe because they lower the standards for minorities to pass the entrance exams just like they do for police officers and firefighters and lawyers and just about everything else....and the white firefighters of New Haven who studied hard on the advancement test and scored at the top of their tests were actually denied advancement because none of them was a minority? It is a fact that colleges and employers do lower the standards for minorities and women....and when they do take the same tests and when thye find that not enough minorities and women have passed the tests, they say that the tests are somehow racist and sexist against minorities and women. NASA was pressuried in the early sixites to push a black pilot who didn't measure up in any of the tests to become an astronaut. If you're not qualified for a job, you just shouldn't the get job period.

The way the law is currently if two people are equaly qualified and one is black and one is white, the one who is the minority will get the job because of the government's mandate for racial quotas, and again, because of these quotas is the reason why many minorities do get jobs over their white counterparts even if they are lesser qualified...why are almost every federal worker a minority? i hardly ever see any white civilian federal workers and they clearly work harder and more productive.
