I'd like to see some of you switch FX like he does. Moving a few fingers around ain't shit. Look at that motherfucking pedal board. Your silly ass would get lost quick..
actually if it wasnt for this guy ya'll the funky ass basslines heard on almost all of sugarhill records would be non exsistant. doug is a bad mutha fukka with or without efx. lest we forget he was george clintons bassist too. and the shit he did with tackhead and living colour is off the damn chain. im a bass player myself and i play with a mutron, chorus, phaser, and a delay . what kills me is that a muthafukka who cant play or wants to play goes and diss and hate on cats who can.
goddamnit! what the fuck is wrong with all you morons, talking shit that he is ''hiding behing his effects'' or that Wimbish is a ''wannabe guitar player''?
you know what, you are all a bunch of fuckfaces. doug is one of the best bass players ever on this planet, and he shows what is possible with a bass guitar.
@JNeifion You are absolutly right there! We just have too ignore the haters. I have to say I'm a bit worried, that more and more people know less about music. Like this performance, it's not just music, its a piece of art, which opens new paths for the world of music. To badly it's not accepted that great by people...
I agree that technically he is great but I do not find one single note of this pleasurable to listen to. It is horrible noise. Would someone actually put on a CD of this and listen to it?
He's relaxed in this video. This is the original hip hip bassist you ignoramuses. Ever heard of SUGARHILL? He was 17yo then. Read books, read the backs of albums, follow the names, stop hanging with bass nerds who compare everyone to someone else (please), that's just plain weird. Say some of this crap to his face and see the back of his hand. Go play a gig and get paid. Well, that's my opinion and advice to some, very few, of the previous posts.
this guy is un-fucking-believeable! And like I'm sure many have posted about this guy, he DEFINITELY embodies the spirit of Jaco, but with totally his own ideas and musicality..... holy shit! :)
this guy is un-fucking-believeable! And like I'm sure many have posted about this guy, he DEFINITELY embodies the spirit of Jaco, but with totally his own ideas and musicality..... holy shit! :)
Absolutely underrated as a bass guitar "artist" in the true sense - I ASK YOU - when was the last time ANY bassist took you on this kind of a sonic journey ? Just amazing / innovative / ingenious / novel. The problem with human nature and fame is that he would have to die to then get a reputation as one of the "best of all time" - and all that other nonsense.
man..... i can barely play that fast with 2 fingers and even slower with a pick but this guys kills me with his damn THUMB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! great job doug hahaha
this guy is like a wannabe claypool hendrix lame ass. take any great guitarist or bass player throw him on this joke's rig and they will tear him to shreds on style, technical ability or anything to do with bass. AND why not throw in a drum machine or loop some beat boxin or whatever it is called?? COME ON. its boring. noodling.
@clifton062 "An ear for the bass guitar"? What the hell does that mean? Nothing against Wooten, but which one of those two bassists has their phone ringing constantly for sessions and gigs?
@Soul74 i would def say wimbish has more structure than claypool.....some stuff claypool does just sounds like hes smacking his bass instead of creating some sort of rythem or sound lol.....but i will say both have a very unique style....its like almost comparing john myung to flea.....it cant be done
@DevinParker18 I have no problem with your statement. I was a huge Claypool fan back in high school and I still admire him for his originality and willingness to do whatever he damn well pleases. This was so long ago, I'm not even sure what the argument is about. I was (am) the biggest Living Colour fan, so I'm just sticking up for one of my favorites (although people tell me I play more like Muzz Skillings anyway).
@blimblamjackson Drum machine? Loop? Beat box? You're retarded. His funk style is completely original, by the way. Les started recording in the 80's, this guy in the 70's. Not what I'd call a Claypool wannabe, ass hole.
@blimblamjackson ROFL!!!! Mate..... This guys style is nothing at all like Claypool. Les Claypool has a very distinct groove which is completely different to this.
You might be a moron, but really, there is no element in this that can be used to compare the 2.

I wanted this to be good, but there's nothing going on here. It's exactly what I do at home when I'm tooling around with my board and looper. To be honest, I'd be a bit embarrassed if my flatmate came in and I was playing like this.
Weird and wonderful playing there, but am I missing something? On the side it says "alison goldfrapp (vocals)" but she doesn't appear to be here?? I only saw a flash of her between 1:40 and 1:50, does she ever actually sing on this show? I'm just interested to see more of her before Goldfrapp formed.

We gotta all ignore these trolls/morons before they render all us musicians insane permanently.
Ever notice most of these types can't even type, never mind think and/or hear.
Can you imagine how bad someone must be on the bass of typing is beyond them?

@Tochudin investigate that this song is from funk jungle disk, Vinx, Will Calhoun and DW the riff of the beginning is played in the song perculator
and sorry but portrait of tracy but has no similar with this song...no disrespect to anyone

@Kharn8181 I was only referring to the 1:28 section, where Doug plays harmonics, it reminded me to it. I know the song is from mr Wimbish.
