Well since she ties green ribbons on the animal, "friends," she finds. the hedge hog just died and she just tied a ribbon on the tree. Some of the ribbons are quite tattered and old too... I assume that is her memorial to all of the animals who died while in her care. He saw it and realized how big her heart was. How she never stopped caring for animals, even when she lost so many. That is my interpretation.

@zeke54321 you see, the ribbons are tied to all her pets. and the hedgehog dies, so she removes the ribbon and ties it on the tree where all the other old ribbons are. then the the cat sees the tree, and he sees the new ribbon, so he knows that the hedgehog died. then he knew that the girl was sad so he went to find her. simple? :D
